Primary clutch issues?

I have a 18 cat with 1800 kms and noticed cracks in cover getting worse. Im debating just buying a complete new clutch for it or buying a ZRP Cover for it? Have guys have luck just replacing the cover and balancing the clutch ?

I have an 18 ER with 800 miles on it and I just put a Thunder Products 911 Response clutch cover on mine. I inspected it throughout and did not see any cracks prior to installation. I would only recommend installing a new cover if your clutch does not have any visible cracks. If it is cracked, you are living on borrowed time and I would replace the whole clutch.

Well Today took the clutch off which bent my puller so had to do the old oil and water trick and then she popped off. So after inspecting the inner sheaves I found a crack about 2 inches long that I could hook with my fingernail. So called dealer and they are well aware of clutches cracking on these cats but I have no warranty so no way they would cover it, go figure.

So Said to bring a new clutch in for me and am told he has had them on back order for the last few weeks already. oh great just like the ski rubber dampners I tried to order a couple weeks ago was told april they would have them. Really Cat what a Joke.

Well dealer got back to me now and found a clutch from a different dealer so I just got the other dealers number and ordered directly from them so being shipped out. $1350 canadian bucks later I should be back on the mountian.

A Little dissappionted that a clutch fails like this and is a well known issue that they will explode just lucky I caught it before it did. Cat U SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS !!

2020 alpha with 1600 miles and found a 2" crack on the movable chiv and 4" on the fixed chiv yesterday.

AC needs to step up here and do something, these clutches need to be recalled. Its not if but when it will crack. Are you listening Gunnar???

I honestly thought this whole clutch issue was similar to the Alpha rail issues... blown out of proportion. Now I'm not so sure.

I have a couple 2020 Hardcores. After my buddies primary sent pieces in to orbit just a few feet from my face last weekend, I decided to disassemble and clean our clutches before going out on another trip. I always blow them out with compressed air after each trip West, and I pull them at the end of season for a cleaning, but the incident last weekend had me nervous.

Lo and behold, with ~1400km on my wife's clutch, two large cracks were forming on the moveable sheave. One was visible all the way through. The black ring has already been brought to my attention. She is a timid rider, so I can assume that is from her being too gentle on the throttle, and the clutch spinning on the belt before engagement. Not sure if that is creating significant heat or not. I would think my very aggressive riding would generate far more heat than she does. My clutch has almost the same number of km on it, but no signs of an issue. I also have an SSI clutch kit on my machine. I'm not sure if that comes in to play or not in terms of reliability. It's a stiffer spring in both primary and secondary, and a slightly different helix on the secondary. Both clutches are the 0725-977.

Found the exact same cracks on my 18 mountian cat with 1800kms so I ended up replacing it with brand new primary clutch from dealer, didnt want to risk have exploding clutch. Costed me $1300 canadian. Going to send old clutch in and see if they will cover it with being out of warranty? If they dont im heading over to the polaris dealer.

My 20 HC had a bearing issue when I originally got it which wore belts out in a single ride. Warranty fixed that. Then at about 2600 km belts started going again, it was a secondary issue but more from wear of a shim I believe but they replaced whole secondary under warranty. At 4200km I found a crack in sheaves on BOTH primary and secondary. So new ones on under warranty, rode 6 more days after the new ones went on and again BOTH primary and secondary sheaves were cracked. So again, warranty popped new ones on. I’m 2 rides in on these so far lol.

To say I don’t have faith in the clutches would be an understatement. Best stock clutching I’ve ever felt though.

^thats nuts, doesnt sound right at all.

the pics of those small cracks, ive only seen that on P-85s on my 90s polaris in the day. 2 of them went in the garbage for it. Dawizman- what year was your buddies? I get that black line if im moving the sled around the dry yard loading/unloading. your wife must spend a lot of time right around engagement

Buddy was on a 2019.

Yes, she does seem to spend a bit of time near engagement. Could also be moving in and out of the shipping container, in the yard, or on & off the sled deck too. But mine didn't have the same mark prior to cleaning, so most likely just her timid riding.

Looked at a early release 2022 146 Hardcore at the Cat dealer in Cooke City yesterday. Wanted to see the new clutch in person, but when I popped the panel off it was the same old primary staring back at me. So not much hope for the new one to be available until next year. I would bet not until they finish production run of new sleds to boot. The casting on the roller clutch I'm running on my suzuki looks pretty poor. I'm checking it before every ride. Hopefully it makes it through the end of the season.
