2010 M8 primary clutch bolt......how do you remove? do you need a special kind of tool ?

and if you want to take clutch off you need puller made for 2010 model year, they changed this year

Puller not required

Or you can use a half inch fine thread bolt with a bunch of teflon tape on it. Fill the crank up with water and screw the bolt into the clutch. The hydraulic pressure will snap the clutch right off the shaft.

Half inch 12 point socket will get the bolt out if that is all you want to do also.

NOT on a 2010 all different now, Takes a T60 Torx and the threads are metric now:typing::typing:

any dealer, Arctic Cat P/N Clutch Puller (p/n 0744-062)

why do you want to pull it, if you just want to change weights or springs you can do it on the sled

i know i can do everything i need while it is still on .....but for cleaning issues id raather pull it off and clean every aspect of it better than i would be able to with it still on the sled

pull it

working on a primary on the sled is baloney. Take it off, a puller costs like $20. PM freeagent on here, she is a cat dealer and will take care of you.

Agreed. I don't know why people waste time trying to dick around with primaries still attached to the sled.

Pull it, and then buy (or better yet, build) a clutch compressor and you never have to worry about the joke pry bar setup slipping off and crushing your fingers.

I've also seen enough bent pullers to know that it's worth it to pull the primary at least a few times a year to do proper maintenance anyways.

Just my opinion, do it however you want though.

I disagree

The only time I pull a clutch is to replace it. I hate to do that kind of abuse to any sled just to do what I can do with it on. Not all but must require some force to pull so I only pull a clutch when I have to. Just my .02

I will pull the spring out to change weights and to clean so as not to fight it that way you can inspect the spring also.

Yep, only takes a second to pull the cover, no need for a bar:face-icon-small-coo

X10. I think it's why so many guys have crank and bearing issues across all the brands myself. Do the maintenance with it on the sled.

In most cases, the reason a primary is so hard to pull is because it hasn't been pulled often enough. I've seen ~5 yr old sleds where the primary will not come off, because it was never pulled even once from new.

Mine comes off at least 5 times a year or more for maintenance. All it takes is a regular ratchet, and a very very small hammer. Put about 100ftlbs on it, small tap one the end of the puller and its off. Hell, I don't even have to take the belt off.

Clean the tapered surfaces before re-installation and it will come off with minimal effort next time too.

It's not hard on the clutch or crank at all. There are a host of other issues that are much more important to crank life than whether or not you pull the clutches....improper clutch alignment, popping belts at WOT, balance of rotating mass, ect.

Again, I think it just comes down to preference. I wouldn't go so far as to say one way is wrong and one way isn't. I just like to have everything laid out nicely on the bench when I work on things.
