Powder Horn Ski Area to Host RMSHA Event in Feb!

Forest Service Naziz! Once again a no common sence decision doled out by these morons. Probably have a big revenue generating X-country ski race planned that weekend. I seem to remember a little event called the X-games held @Crested Butte Mnt Resort in the late 90's.

To turn this around, you're going to have to frame it as "Economic Development", and get a U.S. Senator (i.e. Scott Tipton of Cortez, or possibly Udall) behind it. Get in touch with GJ's Economic Development corporation too.. Leitner-Poma/Prinoth may have an angle to help as well (north GJ by airport). An Economic Development push is the only valid angle that will move mountains with a Federal agency these days. Tipton's your guy.

X-Games? Heck - at one point (before the hippies/greenies took over) CB used to have a XC race that came right down Elk Avenue!

;-)

Man, would I like those days back!

IMO... This state and the Forest Circus do so little for sledders. They just do not want to be affiliated with snowmobiling. Greeny skier's orgs have their ears, and it is all about money without a doubt. I totally agree that's the angle to use.

More areas close every year, something's got to change or before long there will be 3 or 4 areas left where we are all riding. We'll be crashing into one another one tracked out hardpack and I'll be moving out of Colorado. Sorry rant over...

Good luck with the Appeal

I got this directly from the site in the post above, would this in anyway apply here?

The Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act was just signed into national law making it easier for ski resorts that are wholly or partially located on federal land to get special permits to allow activities other than Nordic or alpine skiing.

This prolly applies to other non motorized activities but might be worth looking into.

Not surprising, i just looked at powderhorn ski area's facebook page and they are involved with some enviro nutjob organization called "ski area citizens coalition" which includes the wilderness society, wildlands cpr, etc. http://www.skiareacitizens.com/

Are you implying Powderhorn is nixing the event? The new owners are really trying to get the area going. Cable would know more.

Powderhorn is accountable to the Forest Service regarding certain aspects of operation. If protocal is not followed things can get real stickey.

Doo, you are spot on!!!!!

The new owners at Powderhorn are all for the race and want to see it happen. The ski area did just recieve an environmental award for renewable energy/recycling and public transit solutions, but nothing sinister linked to the greeniacs. This is a powerplay by big brother gov and the unfortunate FS agenda. Thanks for all of the good advice and support, I will pass it on.

That's Udall's bill. It is broadly worded, but speaks to activities such as mountain bike courses, summer concerts, zip-lines and alpine slides, etc..

I doubt the USFS would interpret the legislation to encourage competitive motorsports within ski area special permit boundaries.

Just follow the campaign cash.

;-)

Lands policy in Colorado for some time has been simply dominated by leftists in many of the public agencies.

Do you guys all know that Andy Daly (Former Vail Resorts President) is who purchased Powderhorn? I would imagine he has big development plans. An event like this would only help. The green groups probably won't be happy with him in the long run.

Yes. He along with the other owners are really going to help the area. They have great vision. :face-icon-small-hap

Andy is an awesome guy. Seriously. I've spoke with him several times when I worked with Vail Resorts. Straight shooter and really takes care of his employees.

Hey Cable,

I know we'll be dealing with residual holiday stuff for a bit longer, but have you heard any updates about anything? Any way any of us can help out, or is it in the big dogs hands at this point? Let us know.

No Go

The FS shot down the appeal with "Lynx Habitat". At this point it doesn't look like they will ever let the Powder Horn race happen, at least not while the Obama administration is in place. The race date is still open if anybody knows where to find some good private land to race on LOL!
