Potty training dog

I have never been a dog person but I gave in to my kids sad faces and allowed them to get a Yorkie Puppy. We all like him but we are failing at Potty training. Weve tried setting him outside and all he does it get cold and then come in and goes in the house. We have closed off the mud room area and put the doggie pads down but he just does his biz on the tile. Im about to get rid of him cause I cant take the "biz" in my house and my kids will be sad. Any tips would be appreciated. I know the snow is really making it hard but we still have to do something.

Good luck. Sorry I have a female yorkie and it took almost a year before she learned. It was almost time to get rid of her, then all of the sudden she finally came thru. It was like a light bulb went off. I tried the kennel thing, that didnt take. My dog hates the cold as well. They sure are cute tho. I am glad I didnt have to get rid of her.

Don't let him come inside until he goes. Go out there with him and praise the heck out of him when he does go outside, really make a fool out of yourself and act like it is the greatest thing since sliced bread when he goes outside. If he goes inside, pick him up and bring him outside right after the incident. How old is the pup? It might take a few weeks for him to figure it out....

I used a crate for my pup, got one just big enough there wasn't a whole lot of extra room for her in there

take her from the crate right outside and she'd do her biz then she could play in the house for ahwile-one hour max then back in the crate and repeat

then we'd start letting her out of the crate for longer times, could times she did her biz near the front door, she wanted out but we didn't get her out quick enough

now she's fine, she'll stand by the door as long as it takes until we let her out to go...kinda wish she'd whine a bit but she just stands there until we get her out.

I have a Brittany, maybe Yorkies are a special challange I don't know never had a dog like that.

edit: Nope, here is a good write up and this is exactly how I trained my Britt

tell your kids the crate is not a bad thing, its like a dog den and dogs like to have a den. My Britt goes into her "den" all by herself once in ahwile, I tell her to "crate up" and she runs to the crate (helps to throw a treat in there when crate training them)

Start by getting rid of the "puppy pads"!!! BAD! BAD!BAD ! idea

I never got how people who teach their dog how to to cr ap inside the house expected the dog to know otherwise. Kinda like when the dog is chewing and you toss them your OLD shoe to chew on and then are suprised when they can't tell the differnce between your old shoe and your "good" ones.

First off, take the pup out often and on a schedule. Like first thing in the morning, after they are fed etc. next, don't just open the door and let them out, put the dog on a leash and take the animal to the corner of the yard that you would like to be it's bathroom and do not vary from that spot. It just has to be an area and not a defined spot. (this way you are not going to be wandering over the whole yard with the scooper looking for land mines.

Be very consistant in the beginning and you will not be sorry. On the other hand if yopu choose to be inconsistant and lazy then the dog will train you and not the other way around.

Two basic rules for dogs and children

1. What you tolerate , you teach.

2. training is everything and everything is training.

No pads in house.Follow brushwolfs advice.Left my dog at a kennel once they had these almost playhouse size doghouses for them.Sister inlaws pomeranian was in same house and it crapped on the floor. When the guy came to feed the dogs in the morning he found my 130 pound rottie sitting up on this cat scratching post that had a little sittin spot.He wouldnt come down until the guy cleaned up the mess, funniest thing he ever saw I guess.

small dogs like security, kennels work but they have to be the right size. The kennel should be small enough the the dog just fits inside. if she can walk around inside she will go in the corner and sleep on the other side. yorkies have to go outside alot, there bladders are small and cannot hold it like a big dog. potty pads work but the transition from the front door to outside the door is the tough part.

My lab pissed in my house twice and crapped once. He crapped only because my old man thought it was funny that the dog liked popcorn so much that he ate so much he chit all over the kitchen floor! After that NO MORE HUMAN FOOD!

Do not allow the dog in the kitchen and I do not give him human food.

OK as for what I did that worked for potty training. The first month or so is the crucial months I thought. Oh and I think it is best to get a dog during the cold winter months. Because they are taught it is F'n cold outside and if he hurrys up he can get back into a warm house.

Anyways every 4 hours or so i would take him outside and wouldn't go inside until, A: he went or B: he would run back to the front door like he wanted to go in. Most of the time it was A. Lots of praise for the dog after he does his thing.

I have never owned a dog before but just use common sence. If the dog is crying or pacing or looking around he probably has to take a dump or piss. GET HIM OUT!

My buddy that had a lab when he lived with me. OMG that dumbass didn't know the first thing about common sence and was lazy. Damn dog wrecked my carpet and a pair of Kswiss shoes after he dropped a steamer square in my shoe!

After that I told him to get out.

He is 3 1/2 months old, still VERY small, prob just under 2lbs. He has the crate thing ok I just havent used the take outside and then put him in the crate method. Ill try that. Hes a little older now and it was warmed up a few degrees but when he was 8-10 wks he couldnt handle outside at all.

Don't let him come inside until he goes. Easier said than done when (a) they are 3 lbs (b) it's -20 out with tons of snow.....

Like stated above... use a schedule and stick to it as best you can! try the crate training.... do not let them come in till they go... NO PADS IN THE HOUSE! oh and if you feed on a schedule too, they'll have to poop about 20 minutes or so after eating... schedule and repitition. also they instinctivly won't want to go where theys sleep so a small confined area (crate) to keep them in when you aren't around will help...

After you get them used to going outside every couple hours, they'll figure it out... It's mostly about training the owners at first...

we had a few issues with our toy fox terrier but he quickly got over them. we had a large kennel cuz he was in it all day & needs some room. he kept p'in in it but that was understandable at first cuz they are a small dog & can't hold it for 8 hrs. after a while it got stupid so we started rubbing his nose in it & then slapping his nose. he learned that wasn't something to do so he would hold it. he would be in the kennel during the day & at night when we were sleeping. as he got better we let him sleep in his bed in our room at night & then from there at a year old we now let him run the house all day & he doesn't have any issues.
at first we also had issues with him going in the house when we were right there. if he did that we would rub his nose in it, slap his nose, & throw him outside. no matter how long he was out there he didn't come in until he finished what he started inside. so we got on a schedule of taking him out every 2 hours. we would go outside with him & stand there waiting for him to go. yes it was cold as H but he learned faster. we now no longer have to go out with him cuz he knows what he is supposed to do (most of the time, sometimes he wants to play).
like stated above, "what you tolerate, you teach & training is everything." dogs learn words very quickly too. if we say naughty he knows he did something wrong because that is what we would say when we rubbed his nose in it & slapped his nose. he also knows that potty means going outside & doing just that. consistancy is also very important. just like kids, if you keep them on a schedule they will get used to it.
Good Luck!!!

edit - we also gave him treats after going outside, he got the idea & always wanted a treat so would go outside.
