politics and religion

Why is it that we have such a hard time discussing these topics? I mean, religion and politics have a huge impact on our lives, yet we are incapable of discussing these issues with our common man.

I find it interesting. Like talking about money with people. It is such an under the table issue, very private, very secretive, yet it is about something that we use and control and are controlled by every day.

I just find it odd...

PC, that's it. Everyone is afraid to offend other people. Maybe we should all take a clue from New Yorkers. Those loud mouths don't hold anything back.

The roots of this country are founded on Christian principles. It is so weird to see where we are today. I don't have any kids, but my neighbor says North Bend schools still celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc. Amen!!!

I better step away from the computer and relax before I start a rant on education now...

I think its funny where religion and politics compromise.

The government prohibits teaching of it in schools, and yet gives schools the days off for religious holidays.

The government tries to heavily restrict the commandments, and yet congress gets religious holidays off.

If they want to separate church and state so much, why do they give themselves Sundays off? Think of the productivity if we as Americans were to work EVERY day, not getting holidays, not getting Sunday's off. We would be a different nation, that's for sure. But that will never happen, because as much as the politicians like to keep religion at arms-length, they will never completely abolish it in our nation because they enjoy their vacation homes in Bermuda, Hawaii, and elsewhere, what better time to go than the last couple weeks in December?

I meant the opposite of how you took the subject. Not that people don't discuss it, only that people seem to only be able to discuss it for a short while until it becomes a degrading shouting slanderous death match..

Probably because some who argue spout facts as truth with absolutely no documentation than either try to change the argument or slither out of the thread because they cannot document their statements. Swampy:eek:

Oh swampy, yep you sure are good at that one!! Where is the documentation for that statement?:p

Sometimes people try to argue points against others that they didn't even make....

The posts are there, do I have to go to the posts and paste them over here? Why have you not answered my challenge to your posts? You would make a lousy lawyer as they allways only ask questions they allready know the answers to!Swampy:D:beer;

Yes, I misread. Sorry about that.

Well in my mind it is pretty simple. For example:

I know the sun is orange. I see it with my own eyes and I beleive it with all my soul. Here you come telling me the darn thing is flourecent green and you're sure of it. We'll discuss it for a little bit, then after a while when we still haven't agreed I'm going to get pissed that I can't get through to you and that you could be so misguided. It is so clearly orange. How could you not agree!?!?! I'm looking right at it. The freaking thing is orange!! Don't you dare tell me again that I'm wrong!!

You'll never resolve these differences in religion or politics because there is no absolute 100% proof which is right despite what you beleive with all your heart. It isn't a 1+1=2 situation.

These are powerful topics. Look how divided this country became in 2009.

Anyone wanna talk about abortion??

I brought that post up again, we can continue there..

Yah, though why the individual has such a hard time with the possibility that they could be in error is interesting. What if your example was done with a color blind guy? I think part of the problem is that we have been taught that the solution is one or the other.. but really there is a whole world of other solutions out there.

Very good point. Though I find it interesting that in your above example you use the example of "seeing" were the only interpretation is in our eyes. Yet when it comes to politics and religion, our brain / feelings / desires are involved in the interpretation. That dang brain gets in the way. Anyways. I would agree with you, that there has been little concrete / absolute 100% cause and effect proof about religion or politics, yet we continually argue as if that was not the case.

These are powerful topics. Look how divided this country became in 2009.
It scares me how much people actually hate their fellow Americans, their neighbors, over theoretical view points of economic systems.

Anyone wanna talk about abortion??
I will, get the federal government out of the decision...

What if your example was done with a color blind guy? ...

You nailed it right there. Both guys think they are right. They can see it, they just see it differently. Politics and religion are the same. You don't doubt what you believe, just as if you saw it.

This would probably be a pretty boring world if we all agreed.

I will, get the federal government out of the decision...

Hmmm.... I agree. That was the best abortion debate ever!

Why do we have to agree? How about working together to get to a point where we can both live with the decision?
This whole black vs white world view... the world is shades of gray... and green..
Hmmm.... I agree. That was the best abortion debate ever!
1 down, 50023 to go.. :p

.

I'll go you one farther, why do people think that if you are conservative that you are also religeous? I'm a pretty conservative guy on a lot of issues, but,
not religeous in the least...God? I have a hard time believing in God with
all that goes on in the world, plus I'm a science guy.....however, in a lot
of issues I'm pretty liberal, Abortion...yeah, I wish it didn't happen, but, who am I to tell a woman what to do with her body....Gay marriage? Couldn't care
less, why should they not be miserable like the hetero's....

I'm just tired of all the dishonesty in this country, on both sides...quit ignoring
wrong-doing just because it's your party doing it....

Good points. IMO Government shouldn't have anything to do with any of those topics. I think politicians choose those topics because it is an easy way to get votes. The topic will never be over with, so they will always be able to polarize the voters and get their votes.

The other answer is because that seems to be what a large percentage of the population cares about... more then a lot of other "more important" issues.

wrong-doing just because it's your party doing it....
True that!

I'm gonna be open for ya.

I believe that Jesus died for me

I don't like big government no matter the letter behind it.

And I have NO MONEY so that's why I don't talk about it!
