polaris not warranting motors w/slp pipe

our dealer told us no warranty on motors with slp pipe and can.08 dragon went down with update.

That is generally the rule. Polaris isn't going to warranty the motor with performance mods. However, it is also generally a (unwritten) rule that you dealer steps in to help you get your warranty done. You can always show up with your stock pipe and can if you need work done.

It's not just Polaris...Ski-Doo, AC, Yami, Honda, etc.

our dealer sold us the slp stuff, ran fine 1700 miles last year, dealer says this is going to get real nasty,he has not had an issue like this w/polaris.I can see no more polaris in my future.

Its the pipe that is the issue......In the offical update letter, they say SLP cans are fine and are acutally recommended for some elevations (low).

What's the issue on the motor? I would think they would need to prove the pipe was the problem, but I got the memo when I picked my 08 updated too. I think it's bs. They stock the SLP can through Poo. You would think SLP might be a little upset that they're sort of implying those are a problem. That could hinder sales quite a bit. Keep us posted. GL.

I'd find a different dealer! And I bet the motor went down due to the slp pipe and can ;);). I have'nt even rode my 09 yet this year and im already scared of a blown motor and a wasted trip out west.

Take a look at SLP website. They make no reference to any other sleds, but it states that there is no engine warranty on a 900 polaris with pipe. It is my understanding that the SEMA act requires that the manufacture has to show that the aftermarket piece had some effect on the failure of the stock part. With a pipe that would be a slamdunk, all they have to show is the change in fuel requirements. Used to be that all the manufactures would ignore that kind of stuff, but times are harder for them. I am service manager at a chevy dealer, they are much harder to get along with then they used to be.

Why not just put the stock pipe back on? Just keep the fact that you run a slp single to yourself. What the dealer doesn't know probably will not hurt them. I know its a little on the sneeky underhanded side but.....

warranty

I'm not sure about the 08 and 09 updated sleds, i have a 2010 D8 155, and when I picked it up, the dealer told me the only mod I could do without voiding the warranty was V force reeds and the 2010 SLP can. Anything other than those 2 things will void teh warranty. I to wanted to put the SLP single pipe on, but teh dealer said it would void the warranty. Has anyone read about the 2010 SLP can, it doesnt state anything about a horsepower gain, just a weight savings of 5 lbs, Im guessing these engines are sensative to back pressure.

Andy,

Ask your dealer, specifically, for a print out of your "Unit Inquiry".

If your sleds electronic record at Polaris Industries/GE does not have your pipe noted on there... I'd put the stock exhaust on and take it to another dealer. Don't have your current dealer argue with Polaris Claims over covering your sled WITH the pipe on it!! That will make it worse.

BUT... since your dealer says "its going to get nasty" I would imagine that Polaris KNOWS now that your sled, by VIN number, has a pipe on it and will not warranty this. They are responsible for TELLING Polaris that you have the pipe and since they sold you the pipe with the sled... and did not tell you it voided the warranty... they should take some responsibility.

I've been warning Snowest-Polairs owners about this for a while. In our current economy with the big problems of huge cost of the repairs to these 800 CFi motors under warranty, they will be looking for ways to void the engine warranty...

It is not just Polaris Industries, but the Wall Street regulations of Fiduciary Responsibility to the share holder that has them handcuffed in a way. High times on Wall Street... Hard times on Main Street!!

That in conjunction with the fact that General Electric carries Polaris Warranty and Financing makes it more difficult... GE mandates the Policy on the warranty which is what makes it impossible to get ANY customer interaction on warranty claims. They are trying to limit liability.

This goes for ANY performance mod that is not SPECIFICALLY included in the warranty ... I believe the ONLY perf mod allowed under warranty is the SLP can.

If you have a fuel controller, Pipe, non-SLP can, Turbo, cyl head, reeds, aftermarket or home made fuel filter, electrical mods to your sled.... TAKE it back to stock before taking it into the dealer. Even if it is not a warranty service... you never know when the RSM or GE warranty person is going to be there taking notes on the sleds and running VIN numbers.

The dealers are starting to be asked by Polaris/GE to note ANY mods to the sleds even when they are being brought in for routine maint.

Even if you have a good dealer.... it is taken out of their hands these days by the electronic record "unit inquiry" that shows this info to ANY dealer working on your sled.

It is NO LONGER in your dealers hands or even the RSM to make warranty decisions... Polaris/GE has been known to fly out Claims managers rather than cover a warranty issue.

I know of plenty of Turbo customers that have been denied the update because of their mod... which is only right for someone who has aftermarket parts that almost double the designed HP...

AGAIN: There are NO Mods to the Polaris sleds that will not void the warranty other than the SLP brand Can. NONE! No matter what the dealer or aftermarket parts vendor says.

If you have any other brand can/exhaust on your sled... Keep it to put back on your snowmobile WHENEVER you take your sled in for service... warranty or not... Even if your sled is out of warranty for 800CFi owners since the warranty period has been extended.

IMO... this is a violation of the Sherman/Clayton act... in that they have not given other aftermarket MFG's the ability to get their mufflers (cans) on a list of approved mufflers that DO NOT void the engine warranty.

IF you own an 800CFi... and you have not had the update done because you want to run the heck out of your current pistons and submit the claim in the spring... I recommend that you at least schedule your update now AND have them order the parts... then check to see that they have them in stock with your name on them.... You can then keep pushing back your service appt while re-confirming with the service manager that YOUR parts are in stock and ready to install.

Any mods to the motor will void the warranty. It is only if Polaris finds out just like any other manufacturer. I agree that it is a bit of a cheap shot to try and blame these problems on the pipe. It has been alot of years since I have seen pipes cause problems. The old ultras gained so much power 45 hp from a set of tripples that they would detonate to peices. and the old 650's would twist cranks from to high of rpm's.

I picked up a 2010 Dragon 800 163, dealer sold it to me with SLP pipe and can, they said no warranty issues.

You need a new dealer

Good Luck

Skisucca...

Your dealer is not giving you accurate information.

I would also get it in writing from them...

As I noted above... It's not in the dealers hands any longer!!

Find a different dealer
I would say dealer is trying to pull a fast one .Probably figures Polaris budget to tight on repair time and can soak you for more money than they would get paid from Polaris . Who is to say he didnt put it back together right during the update Polaris stuck alot of money out there to update allthese machines to avoid getting a bad rap. I have rode mine since update she pulls harder than before. I would definetly corner your dealer on this and make him prove it was the pipe goodluck

By law... they don't have to prove that a diff pipe CAUSED the problem... just that it has different pipe.

Now, some will chime in here and say that they had their piped or turbo sled updated... I belive you (sincerely)

Well... you got LUCKY... AND your dealer put their neck on the line... they could get their service dept audited and/or shut down for this... not many dealers these days that will risk their business to do this. Polaris is making it more and more difficult for dealers to make claims that are outside of the lines.

get a new dealer... i know of dealers that have warrantied 09's with turbos, pipes, nitrous. all polaris wants is a pitcure of the sled under the hood and of the damage. not a big deal to take your goodies off to save a ton of $$$$. polaris is pretty nieve to think the only mod people add is the SLP can.
