Passing on a trail

Yesterday I was passing a freind of mine on a groomed trail and was side by side when some guy blows by me on my left going the same direction. This was a 3 wide pass on the trail. Was I wrong to confront him in the parking lot or is he just an absolute MORON? His response to me when I called him stupid was " Well it is a really wide trail" If I would have known he was coming I think I would have moved left and run him into the trees. I am sure I know the answer to my question but would like to hear other points of veiw.

Doesn't sound like a wise move on his part. I try to make sure the other rider is aware I'm there before I pass. I also try to pay attention behind me and stay right so others can pass (pretty rare though ;)).
What bugs me is the people that putt along, oblivious to anyone being behind them, never looking back and riding all over the trail, makes it difficult to pass.

Stupid move!!
Should always wait until hopefully they notice. Maybe take 20 miles, but not worth scarring the timid rider off the trail into an accident.
There should be a common sense mtn rules sticky post.

Not that you were saying we were putting a long. We were both running about 60 and were about 2 miles from the lot I decided to open it up after a curve, I glanced behind me and saw no one so I let er rip and then there he was. It did scare the chit outta me also.

That's pretty dumb, when i'm coming up behind someone I rev my sled up so they can hear me (with my pipes its not hard!), then I pass them. I only pass on straightaways though, people who even pass on much of a corner piss me off.

I hate to say it but I have done this many times. Passing as long as there is enough room to do so, it never bothered me on how many people are on the trail as long as there was room and no one was coming the other way with a good view of what was up there. Sure, I'll do it.

Most of the time I stay back and study how each is riding and then when the timing is right I will go by, of course faster then they are going to make the pass but not WOT by any means. I then pull in front and continue on my way. The rest of the group usually follows and that's all there is to it.

1) No one should be riding side by side other then to pass, so if you were doing that you were just as much in the wrong as the guy passing.
2) Stay to the right and if you notice someone behind you, they aren't part of your group, simply move over and let them by, or motion them by. They got to that position by riding faster then you so let them continue at that.
3) Confronting them is wrong unless it was something that was totally stupid, then a simple talk that remains calm would have been the best thing. That way each of you remain cool and what was done is done. Move on, life isn't all about 10 minutes ago.

Really, do you have many friends? DONT do that to any of my friends. Get over it you got passed. This is precisely why I stay off the trails. Im sure the guy you passed probably has a post on here somewhere about some knob he couldnt get around. Perspective, your & his.

RJ, you weren't in Cooke this weekend were you?:) I was passing but was right beside my freind and was in the proces of the pass when this happened. I do understand how I said it you could think I was running side by side with him. I never do this with the exception of passing. I've been riding since 1974 and always rode like I was driving. And I have never passed 3 wide in a car and am pretty sure it is not legal to do so.

Kevco, I could care less if someone passed me, been passed before, and will get passed again. I have never had a problem and still do not have a problem with being passed. But you have obviously missed the point HE PASSED 3WIDE, I do not feel that this was safe and if one of your freinds is dumb enough to do something like that then I guess he would have to suffer the consequences. Even though I said it I would never intentionally run someone off the trail. But what if for some reason I would have swerved to the left? I more than likley would have hit him causing damage to both his and my sled. He could have waited till I made the pass and then could have passed both of us at that time.

Just feeling froggy tonight, I knew there had to be more to it. I have seen some trails it would be safe to pass 6 wide, some I wouldnt pass on at all. I still hate trail riding:mad:

I to don't care for trails but at Cooke you have to ride about 6 miles of trails to get from the lot to where you can get off trail.

Can no one read this guys original post clearly or what? Some people read their own version into it.

He wasn't racing side-by-side nor putting along , and the guy he was going around was his freind so I doubt he has a post on here.

Pay attention, it's free.

I'm with JR, I get up behind them and pull over to the left of them, I will wait until they notice me or I am confident they are not going to suddenly pull over to the left. When I do determine that it is safe I will slowly get up beside them until them notice me and them speed up...

However, it sounds like this guy just sped pass you, I think that can be dangerous, and can scare the person being passed.

If the trail is wide enough to pass 3 wide, I don't think that's an issue...they do have 3 and 4 lane traffic.

sounds like a pretty dumb pass in most cases. but if you were going down the trail at cooke I think I'd be a little more sypathetic to the other guy. The trail is a 40 ft wide highway. That makes the situation a little different than the 15ft wide trail most people are imagining.

Pretty Dumb pass I agree,
But I also wonder you said you were passing, but then you said you were both
going about 60... were you riding 2 abreast? if so I can kinda see why he passed..
either way, I hate passing especially if the person in front of me doesn't know I'm coming.
You never know what they(in front) will do.

I agree with RJ I don't think i have ever passed someone three wide because when people are two wide they are usually racing down the trail. If you didn't see anyone when you looked back after the corner it should have been easy to pass your buddy and get back on the right side of the trail before someone else came up on you. I'm sorry this happened but I'm sure next time I see someone riding two wide down the trail, and I'm going faster than them I'm sure as he!! going to pass both of them on the left. Sorry if this offended you!!!!!!

Ok so since I have not made this clear enough for people I will try again. A freind and I were going down a trail at about 60 mph single file. We had just gone around a curve and I decided I would open my sled up on a straight stretch that was about a mile long. My freind was riding one of my sleds and this was his third time out on a sled. I looked behind me and saw noone coming. I pulled out to the left quite far, as this is a wide trail, I did not want to be to close to my freind as he is new to riding. I moved up along side him fairly slowly as I wanted to be sure he knew I was there and I did not startle him. I was just in the process of accelerating hard after my freind looked over and I knew he saw me when this guy blows by me on the left. There probably was only about 5 feet between me and the snowbank on the left I do not know for sure and I am sure some of you would have wanted me to get my tape measure out to measure it. Sorry but I left it at home. Yea it did scare me enough that I slowed down and pulled back in behind my freind and collected my self and I then did make the pass and followed the guy to the parking lot. All this took place from approximatly 2:56:30 and 3:02:27 p.m. on 03 02 08. Man I cannot beleive that there was so much read into a simple post. I hope this is a detailed enough explanation to what happened. I will put it in writing and have it Notorized. In my veiw I still say it was not a safe pass and judging by some of the replies on here it is a sad example of what our sport is turning into. My rant is over now

Just like driving in city traffic you have to prepare and expect the unexpected even on the silly trail! At least you have a madulaoblongata function and lifted to live another day.

Have to let natural selection do it's work on some people (the trick is not being collected in their selection process). Now often times their madula's are just fogged up or out of order temporarily. A good pop to the side of the knoggin will often times reboot things for them. Especially after you've tried the softboot like you did in the parking lot.

{side bar...when re-educating it's wise to survey the situation (are they big, tough, and could they have a gun) and decide wether you might be being naturally selected by even approaching said individual in the parking lot}

ROTFLMAO Rob.......

I toooo agree with RJ..... Just like you felt it was ok to pass ur bud, this "guy" felt it was safe to pass you..... There are times that you can pass 3-4-or even 5 wide on trails...... I also agree with you rulz, he should have let you know he was there before he passed, but not everyone thinks the exact same.....

And I have never passed 3 wide in a car and am pretty sure it is not legal to do so.
Never driven in So Cali have ya;)
