outdoor surveillance

I think we have some neighborhood kids breaking into vehicles
been a string around our pad lately, 3 in 2 weeks

what is the best way for surveillance?
I saw that hummer post about the side mirror cams. what is the best set up?
wireless to a laptop?
hard wired to a VCR?
silent alarm on the vehicles?

would like to be able to see them in the act by some kind of warning...
or at least get good video of them.

thinking of mounting just under the soffits or something similiar.

any body have a set up to reccomend?

wildlife camera is about the best. mount in the trees and get one that doesnt flash but has infrared.
