So I picked up a 300 short mag and took it to the range today to sight it in. Thinking it would be about like my 30-06 or 7mm, I line it up, fire and split my forehead open. Unbelievable, been hunting and shooting my whole life. Never scoped myself before. I've shot almost everything from hand guns to a Barrett .50 cal, machine guns, RPG's, LAW rockets and now a 300 short mag takes me down. So now I get to look like a dumb *** until it heals. Anyone ever done this before?:o

dude that sucks, ive never been scoped before but then again ive never owned a high kick rifle. my 300 h&h just sits back in my shoulder nicely, i almost got scoped by my dads ruger model 77 300 kicks like a mule, i hate that rifle idk how he can shoot it

Tell me about it, I went through almost a whole roll of paper towels before I got it to quit bleeding. Got it sighted in but have to admit I was a little skittish firing it after it tried to knock me out. $70 in ammo later its pretty much dead on at 100, 200, and 300 yds.

laughing with ya Big, have never done it but come real close..when I bought my 300 UM years ago,I decided I wanted to shoot it before I took it to my buddy at wild west guns for the brake......it almost got me on the first shot.

Yeah, these .300's have good whoop to them. My shoulder has gotten sore several times after shooting 3 or 4 times right away.
Mike, that .300RUM sounds fun. Have a buddy selling one, trying to have one of my nephews buy it from him as he needs a bigger rifle than his .243.

it is...love shooting it..it is due for a new barrel its had alot of hot rounds thru it over the years but will still shoot a 2 in. group at 100(was .500 new)...only problem with a big brake is its loud..but funny I never hear it when in the field just at the range....

When you are shooting to fill the freezer it is different then shooting paper, andrenaline rush. I still don't shoot without hearing protection though.

LOL...MY 300 Ultra got me the first shot too. I went from shooting a 300 weatherby mag so I didn't think it would be much worse at all...wrong!!! Didn't bleed too bad, barely clipped me, but definately pay attention to where my face is now. Seems like they just keep comming back!!!!

I think you should have to post a pic, lol. its one of those things that you know will happen eventually if you shoot enough, ya just hope its not too bad when it does. sounds like you got whacked good. have a :beer;

I did it too for the first time in a looooong time. 16" 45-70 barrel on a T/C contender carbine, Hornaday Leverevolution spire-point rounds, but the Sightron that sets up on top of it did the damage to me!

lol. that sux. i have yet to have that happen, but i'm sure it will.

had a gun stock split my lip open a few years back, ouch. it was a slow day chasing yotes, so my brilliant passenger says go whip a cookie in that big snow drift. soo, of course i get up to about 50 mph and hit the sidehill, well under all the snow was three big *** washouts. we launched out of the first one and land directly in the second, which launched us into the third. when the dust cleared, i was bleeding from the mouth, he has a huge bruise on his ribs. not a scope injurie, but a gun injury non the less.:)

I was on a drop hunt in AK when I went to shoot a Caraboo and did the same thing, leaned out over the scope and pow! I dropped the boo and wondered where the blood was comming from. I had a stream comming down either side of my nose. I got back to my dad with the news and the first thing he said was "who shot who"? Could have prob used a couple stitches but was a week from getting picked up. Looking back I don;t know what we would've done if it was more serious.

I have got the thumb in the cheek a few times as a reminder but no scope
2 buddies made me laugh with a pistol grip shotgun
First held it up in front of him and it smacked him in the face, the other guy made him feel like a dork and then did exactly the same thing
Have you guy's seen the youtube vid with the .557 sniper rifle?

Took a buddy shooting prairie dogs a few years back in college. He tells me that he is a seasoned hunter, and I know he is a farm kid. Figured he could handle a .243, guess I was wrong. First shot he gets a big nasty cut over his eye, thing bleeds all the way back to town, had to take him to the ER to stitch it, never laughed so hard in my life. His parents were in town and his mom could not stop laughing at his stupidity when she saw him....

I got my brother-in-law to give himslef a beauty mark with my 300WSM. IT was awesome, he wouldn't STFU about stuff he had no idea about, so we kept our mouths shut as he choked up on the wizzum.

POST PICS!!!

Been there, done that, Still got a faint scar in eyebrow as a reminder. Mine happened at 18. Grew up shooting all forms of scatter guns, first time on 30.06 I "thought" I had it whipped. Turned out I was wrong. Funny looking back on it now, hurt like h311 when it happened.

Not much of a shooter so I don't feel so bad telling the story. I was out on a river boat with my old boss and he brought along his 700. He just bought a new Leopold scope and spent a bunch of time and shells at the range sighting it in. We pulled over on the river for a little lunch and he grabbed an empty coke can and threw it in the river while I sat down river a little ways holding the rifle. When I spotted the can I squeezed the trigger. The gun kicked hard (I was warned) and the can went sailing. I did hit it dead on but also took the sight end of the scope in the face. It cut me above and below my eye and blackened half my face. When I handed it back to him (after picking myself up off the ground and wiping the blood off) the scope was just about sideways on the gun. He never invited me again.

Mine wasn't quite that bad. lol. I bought a .270 for my girlfriend tonight. It was a little embarrassing standing at the gun counter with this cut on my forehead. I hope she doesn't do the same thing to her forehead when I take her out in a couple weeks, she will probably never go hunting with me again if she does.

When I was around 11, my Dad let me shoot his 357 mag Contender with a scope. Witch the shell he reloaded....It wasn't bad didn't draw blood, but I took the scope to the head.....I am pretty sure he knew what might happen:eek:
