options to get my ABS pack to where I'm riding (Togwotee)?

I know I can't take the canister and trigger on the airplane.

I could buy a new canister and trigger and have it shipped there, but $$$$$.

It's unclear to me if I'm allowed to ship my own canister and trigger or not. Obviously they can be shipped, but just like I can order a small lead-acid battery from Amazon and USPS delivers it, but I can't ship that same battery back out USPS because its "hazardous materials." Person versus business? Any info on this?

Anybody know if Togwotee will rent just the ABS canister and trigger? I'll call later when they open, but I'm curious if anybody else has done this.

Other options?

I know they have the capabilities to fill bca cylinders as I have had them service mine. You could look at renting a pack from oerentals.com and having a bca pack shipped and then fill when you get there. I think about $60 or so for a week rental. A call to the rental sled shop will give you the info you need. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Check it. Go to ABS site and print the hazmat sheet and pack it with your bag. It could get delayed without the sheet, learned that re hard way.

It's $39 a day and I'm not going to pay to rent a pack when I already spend $1000 to buy mine.

They do not fill ABS cylinders, which is compressed nitrogen.

I read about this for literally a couple hours about this yesterday and I'm not going to try to try to check it. Chances of getting it on the plane would be low. I read numerous stories about people getting their stuff taken by TSA of having to leave it behind with friends/relatives, then paying to overnight it to where they are going.

With a BCA pack (compressed air) you could do it, if the valve is off and you can show them an empty bottle. Then you need to get it filled when you get there. With ABS, they won't allow the cylinder (compressed nitrogen) or the handle, which has a small explosive charge in it.

Nice explanation here. Sounds like Europe has it all figured out, but the TSA is still being stupid about it in the US.

I'm going to try to ship mine UPS tomorrow. I'll take the UPS hazmat sheet from when it was originally shipped to me in to the UPS store with me. I'll let everybody know what they say. Generally speaking, UPS is much more lax than USPS is.

I here you on renting from the lodge! Oerentals will rent you one for 59/week plus $20 shipping. Your gonna spend that in hazmat fees alone to get yours there. Good luck with whichever way works out.

I read your original reply too fast. That's a pretty fair deal. Thanks for the tip.

No problem. Rent a throttle 22 and forget about the rest. Nice thing is the guide shop can fill the cylinder when you get there.

TSA looked at mine on last trip and they are allowed if you check it. Did you looks at ABS site per suggestion?

USA

The US American Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) will not allow your pressurized cartridge on board. Discharge (activate) the gas cartridge before entering the airport. Only once your cartridge is fully discharged, unscrew the cartridge head from the cartridge and put both in re-sealable plastic bags. Carry them through the TSA security checkpoint so they are visible to TSA personnel. Afterward, the cartridge head can be screwed back on the cartridge by hand. An ABS dealer at your destionation can replace the empty cartridge for a new one.

Glad we were able to help out knaffie with a Throttle rental today!

He told us that Togwatee isn't even offering on-site airbag rentals anymore, either, so we're certainly happy to still be an option out there for folks.

Thanks!

Oe has taken good care of me for the last few years!
