Opinions on turbo kits for mod & non modded motors

I have been hearing many different opinions on which turbo kits are the best for the nytro. Generally what I am hearing is that the mcxpress is the best for guys that want to do minimal engine work and forget about it. If I do rods pistons and headwork, I have been hearing the powderlite kit is more suitable for it. I know lots of guys have done turbos with many different levels of engine work. I'd like to hear from you guys directly what you think. Sometimes the vendor selling the kit isn't the unbiased opinion Iam looking for..

Thx in advance..

I went with the Powderlite kit and did the install myself the only engine mods that I did was a head shim and cam timing. this kit will flat out rip and hang with any of the other kits I have road with if not blow them away. I have a friend that has the mcx and it is a very good kit but would not hang with the others until he got all the updates this year. now it is impressive he has laid the smack down on some mid mount turbo,s with it . for me I like to work on my own sled and powderlite customer service is hands down the best I have ever had. the power this kit makes at only 12# of boost on pump gas is just crazy.

Basically boils down to the usual:

First what type of riding do you plan on doing.
Second how much boost do you really want to be running.
Then that will help decide fuel vs. headshim/motor work.
Also how much tuneability do you want? Even with the mcx you can buy the mcx databox and mess with mapping.

Unfortunately even after deciding on which kit and getting it installed the domino effect has just begun because now you will need to adjust track/rails/suspension/tunnel/steering/not to mention trying to put it on a diet.

The more boost the higher the need for most of the above mentioned.

From what I have been reading it does not appear not a lot is gained from doing engine work unless you are aiming for big boost. For most 15lbs on pump gas is plenty. I heard MCX was working on a 17lb pump gas kit as well. Carving powder turns and hitting jumps at 20+ boost is a little overkill hehe. Again depends on what type of riding you like.

At least starting from scratch you can have the components you want.

I like the mcx kit because it is relatively simple and the deal was right. If I had my choice I would probably pick the powderlites kit because of the tune ability and from what I hear Dave is pretty good at helping customers dial it in.

Most would agree impulse, powderlites, mcx, alpine kits would be the best choices.

...shrug I am sure fellow boosters have some input.

I am going to put a 162*16*2.25 track under it, any suggestions as to what tracks are the best for a boosted sled, I was very happy with my 154 xp track..

Thats what is on mine camo extreme.

162 x2.5x 15-3k and the tips are just starting to bend. I dont think I would want a 16 wide, as it is enough work to man handle the 15 in tight spots.

I'm totally happy with my Powder Lites set up. 270hp on pump gas w/head shim and timing. Kicks my buddies A$$ with the regular MC Xpress set up.

I'm running a 162x15x2.25 Power Claw Track and it is holding up just fine:D

If you have any questions or are looking for a PL dealer...shoot me a PM.

Cheers,

Kevin

Kits

I havent been around all the turbo kits but from what I hear they all have there own quirks about them. I have a powder lite kit on my nytro and its been pretty good. In my riding group I'm the only one running this kit, and I don't know anyone else running this kit. It's nice to be unique, but it's also nice to compare to someone else with the same set-up when troubleshooting. I would go with the kit your installer knows best, they all make good power. I really like the RB3 programmer... Not one map fits all (IMO) but its really easy to modify and create your own. I used some of Daves as templates then created my own, its working really well. If you go with powder lites I would recommend upgrading your injectors at the same time. The stockers max out at 10-11psi at low elevation. I have way more power with the bigger injectors now at the same 10-11psi.

Don't forget to save some $$$ to upgrade your track and skid too. Turbo and stock skid/track don't mix.. Most guy's can get away with the stock skid/track on the Apex, but not on the Nytro.

lots to choose from just have to decide whats right for you.impulse, alpine ,powderlites ,mcx or brad story propane kit if you got a few extra bucks.all of these guys make great kits & all have great customer service.me personally i like the front mounts because of the way they balance the sled for my style of riding.iam looking for a kit for my nytro too & think all these kits have good points to them.right now iam trying to decide between the impulse race kit,the alpine kit or mabey if i can swing it one of brads propane sleds.the big thing right now is our can $ suck so getting a system from the us is rather pricey.:beer;:beer;:beer;

The apex track is just as bad as the nytro track. The maverick track is junk. Get the camo extreme 2.5"

Tracks

The apex track is much to soft. If you only ever rode 3ft of powder it would be ok. The camo extreme is a much better all around track. Lasts a hel1 of alot longer also.

I've got 3300kms on my 2nd Maverick and I'm missing 10-15% of the lugs. It works fine in the powder but on the trail and the firm snow not so great. It also throws up a lot less snow into the tunnel thanks to the bent over tips.

I am hard on it though...it's been fed a lot of stumps and rocks. The tracks on the skidoos I ride with still look new though.

My first maverick was replaced on warrenty at 960kms.

I'm planning on replacing it with a single ply track.
