The longest confirmed kill on ANYTHING was done with a .300 Ultramag by Dan Kinneman over in the Jackson area. He managed to grease a Prarie dog at 2200 somethin yards

I didn't know that. Did Dan move to Jackson? He was living in Green River last i knew. Dan helped me with my STW. He taught me a very rigorous break in regiment for it. I stuck to it religiously and i think it has effectively doubled if not tripled my barrel life. I can shoot 50 rounds at 3500 FPS and will barely see copper fouling on my cleaning patch. That is critical with these over-bore magnums. I have well over 600 rnds through my STW and still can maintain tight groups. Last year while getting ready for hunting I shot a 5 shot group at 300 yards that went .458" center to center!

Carlos Hathcock hit a battlefield courier quartering away, on a bicycle, at 1,100 yards.

Wood stocked Winchester M-70 in 30.06 with a bedded action and heavy barrel. 8 power Unertl scope.

173 grain boattail match ammo.

Even though by today's standards of that shot being very easy....There will be no equal to the skills of the great "White Feather". Could you imagine what he could do with a .50 BMG?

Sako what action did you build your 7stw off. Im liking the remington 700 actions.

The 700 Rem. action is as good as it gets short of a custom action. There are others that are good too but you will find more custom made rifles on 700 Rem. actions than any other.

IIRC that shot at the guy on the bicycle was with a .50 BMG. He had a M2 machine gun and mounted a scope (Unertel IIRC) to it, squeezed off single shots with the paddle trigger. I was also thinking that was more like a 2k shot, it's been a while since I read the book.

I had to go back and check my copy of One Shot One Kill.

Gunny Hathcock used a .50 cal Browning machine gun in single shot mode on the bicycle. The courier was a kid so he shot the bike frame. The kid then grabbed a weapon and began firing back so he killed him...2,500 meters.

took a300 wtrb mag with the good 35 year old action not like the junk they sell now necked it to 7mm 120 accubonds just under 4000 fps if you can see you can kill it ....bye trappersnapper

id get the 300ultra because the ammo is available and lots of load data and pretty much every gun maker sell it.

But if you want a true .300 id go see Dakota's website

Nate i know you are a heck alot of smarter about guns than me and if i was running full bore at work i would have no problem building a gun but i think i can do the ultra cost effective it may bite me in the arse and i will eventually be calling u for a gun but for now i think im gnna do the ultra. I knw the dakotas are awesome. Thnks everyone for all the info.
