Opinions on a caliber of a gun.

Actually i think lost river went out of business but berger bullets do have 30 cal bullets in the .6 bac. I am looking for a gun that i can access reloading stuff from the factory. I was going to build a 7-300 weatherby but i dont want to fire form all the brass. Like i said i want the ammo to be accesible if i go somewhere out of state on hunts and airport loses my ammo.

Best bullets i have found have been noslers. I have some buddies shooting the bergers and they say after shooting them they can go dig them out of the dirt mounds behind the targets and reload them. Im going to stick with nosler. Oh and thanks everyone for their opinions much appreciattion.:beer;:beer;:beer;

I have thumped a few elk at 700+ with my 6.5-06 long range setup using the 142smk's. works like magic. just keep in mind that if you are expecting to be making hits at a grand your bullet needs to perform optimally at that speed (2 grandish) so a super premium is not necessiarly the hot ticket.

If what you are after is a rifle to take a bull elk at 1000 yards, then I would consider a 300 win. mag. You had said that you were going to build this gun, I would contact Dave Manson at manson precision reamers and have him make you a reamer that cuts the belt ten thousands deeper and a headspace guage to go with that. I have one sitting here and am waiting for my krieger barrel to show up so I can get this done. I bought a rem sendero, and it was a piece of junk, they replaced the first rifle for me and the second was no better. The barrel to reciever alignment is horrible. The best that I can get is a 6 inch group at 700 yards, and that is after 2 years of dealing with rem and alot of reloading. Hope this helps.

May be the 325 wsm is what your after i hear good things about it. Check it out.

I used to be a big .30cal fan too. Infact my most used hunting gun is a 300 Weatherby but when you get into case capacity over say the size of a 300 weatherby you need a very long, unhuntable long, barrel.

The 30-378 is a great example. The .30cal bullet selection when looking at B.C. is one of the best but to take advantage of all that powder you need a very long barrel. There just isn't enough bore there to burn it all up in 26inches. That's why in the useful hunting length guns (26inches) the 338-378 outshines the 30-378. Now if your looking at building a custom with a 30+ barrel the overbore .30cal stuff has a better B.C. than does the .338cal and will have better performance for long range shooting.

go to a rell gun like the 45-100 to 45-120 or the 50-140 sharps or ballard black powder

if you like new guns ill go with 458 lott 460 weatherby mag or 458 win mag
but in the timbor i like the 444 marln

50% of my big game kills come from berger's 140gr 6.5 stuff. All comming in ranges from 200yards to 1000 yards and all 1 shot kills. I tried using Nosler competition rounds but they just dont hold together very well. When I get them hot in the summer for P-dogs I found that Noslers just turned into a shotgun glitter show about 3' from the muzzle break. no fun :face-icon-small-sad

Lost River has been doing great things. Make good points :) But I dont get where these companies can get off charging as much as they do for f*ckin bullets. I cry purchasing them at my price :o

I get my .338 cheytac rounds from a small company in Germany that gives my bullets less friction and better FPS and give me a 1.1BC. They empty your wallet fast but they carry the best down range. Cool little bullets :face-icon-small-hap well......I guess they are not little in comparison to other bullets.

I believe this company also does .30 cal stuff as well. Its what our military is using

So nate am i thinking wrong on getting a 300 ultra im trying to do a low cost effective long range gun that i can access ammunition if lost by airlines when i fly to diff states and countries. If you so happen would do a 300 ultra what would u do. Cost effective may not be possible?

Long range?

Carlos Hathcock hit a battlefield courier quartering away, on a bicycle, at 1,100 yards.

Wood stocked Winchester M-70 in 30.06 with a bedded action and heavy barrel. 8 power Unertl scope.

173 grain boattail match ammo.

Dont waste your time on a 7-300 WBY. It has identical case capacity and ballistics to the 7mm STW.

.300 RUM is a great round and has nice fit between the .300 WBY and the .30-378 WBY. 26" barrel min but to get full efficiency would better in about 30-32" bbl.

No matter what big magnum you buy you will puke powder. I get so tired if hearing about big bores being powder pigs (sorry Nate). The numbers dont lie as there is a performance gain (over lets say a .300Win. Mag. and even the .300 WBY) rather your puking powder or not .

I do NOT see any advantage of building a .300 Wolf (.338 Lapua necked down) over a .300 RUM as 50FPS difference is null really and the Wolf still pales in comparison to the .30-378. not sure where the Dakota falls in there that Nate likes. If I was going to spend the cash building a custom that is reasonable as compared to say a Cheytec, it would be the Lazzeroni Warbird!
