online maps of the snowies

I've started keepin waypoints for riding areas, squirt them into my GPS the night before a ride. As I ride, it leaves digital breadcrumbs that I can dump back into the computer.

Keep those breadcrumbs in a folder with a few pics from that ride, dump that file into Google Earth.... it's neat to see where you were on a map after you ride it.

What GPS are you using?

Thats a kick a$$ setup you have.

Believe it or not, it's an old GPS12. $20 off Craigslist.

The damn connector for it cost more than I paid for the GPS.

Almost any unit that has a serial or USB port can do this... I use to translate to GPX. Google Earth will import and plot the GPX files, but LoadMyTracks/EasyGPS need the KMZ translated to GPX in order to squirt it into a GPS.

All of the above software is free.

the GPS files take alot of time to do. someone has to ride every trail and log it on to the GPS, take it back, load it onto the computer, modify it, and import it to the web. very indepth and extensive. you can do it your self on atv and snow trails and send it to Garmin and they will update their maps for everyone to use. cool!

Almost any unit that has a serial or USB port can do this... I use LoadMyTracks, it's a basic interface to get GPX files to/from the GPS. Doesn't do any fancy mapping, doesn't edit waypoints, just moves data back and forth. EasyGPS is a good option for windows, though I had some issues with it crashing on my WinXP VM.

Google Earth is what I use for mapping/waypoint management. Save the location to a KMZ, and use GPSBabel to translate to GPX. Google Earth will import and plot the GPX files, but LoadMyTracks/EasyGPS need the KMZ translated to GPX in order to squirt it into a GPS.

I use GPS Trackmaker...you can make waypoints and routes in GE and open them in it to upload to your GPS. It will also download from your GPS and convert directly to kml/kmz. It can talk to my Magellan 315...I'm almost certain it will work on yours. http://www.gpstm.com/

They have all the GIS data they need to give out electronic maps....they had to use something to make trail maps. I emailed Wyoming Trails to see if they would give it out, but they won't. Maybe if they get enough requests, they would. I also emailed the Snowmobile Association to see if they could help out...haven't heard back yet. I would be willing to take GIS data and convert it to GE if it were made available and share it out so people can use it like Togwotee9 does.....

check out the maps and information at http://mtnops.com/maps ... if there is enough interest i could setup a map layer that overlays the wyo snowmobile trail system.

also you can add your gps/gpx files to the site and view all the map overlays and data quickly.. take a look at this link:

http://mtnops.com/node/6121

you can set them public or private. also, you can setup your SPOT beacon and integrate that with the site. let us know and we'll set it up

wow, an overlay system wouldbe wicked awesome! All that forum talk went right over my head. But I have saved my track logs and overlayed them back on to google. I tried to convert them so it would overlay back on my gps, but not sure I ever got it right.

I also use my BB and turn off the data to conserve batter, but use it to bluetooth tunes to my helmet speakers. Wish it would work with my gps on the bb!

Has anyone been able to get maps online this year yet? I've ordered 2 or 3 times the SE region at this web site over last few months -->Regional Trail maps

Is there another web site I should look? Worst case situation are they available locally in the Snowy's?

You should be able to find them locally without any issues. I know I have picked them up at snowy mountain lodge before.
