This was the end of a blue sky, awesome day's ride.

What would cause this?
The starter is stock, from the factory, never messed with.
I think the starter cog was able to move out towards the basket while the motor was running. I never heard anything odd, but I have a "Thing" can so that doesn't surprise me!

I know I need to replace the part but I want to know what caused it before it eats another part.

Anybody?

Did this happen when you put it in RER?

I think you had better be glad it was plastic!

Is your assembly able to be taken apart and put back together to replace it doo you think?

Upon closer inspection of the pics - it DOES look like it happened in the forwards direction. Have you had issues getting your rope to pull back in? Many times pulling the rope after it's started to get it to pull back in?

In the begining of this season I was out riding and when I went to start it, the rope came out without ever catching the basket on the flywheel.
It happened a few times that day but by "Finessing" it I could get the cog to flip out and engage so I could start it.
I know about pulling slowly until it engages first then pull for all you're worth so I didn't damage it that way.
I then took the starter off at home and determined that there was a little belt dust and dirt in the parts so I cleaned it up real well and it worked great...for 4 rides or so.

Yesterday, I pulled it to engage it, then pulled to start it and it backfired. Ripped the handle right out of my grip.
After that I noticed it was "Ratcheting" as I was pulling from then on but not catching the basket much.
I thought maybe it was dirty again so I finessed the cord, trying to engage the cog but it wouldn't for a long time.
Just when I was about to give up and get out the emergency starter strap it finally caught enough to start.
I still thought it was just dirt keeping it from swinging all the way out and engaging but this morning I tore it apart and it looks like the red "Cog" has been riding on the spinning "Basket" for a while, wearing it down to nothing.
It isn't that the cog is broke off, it's worn down like it had a grinder taken to it.

I'm wondering if the factory didn't put enough tension on the spring allowing it to semi-engage when the motor is running or something???

Have you checked your PM's today?

i have had problems with plastic starters in the past. if you are running a can it will transfer heat to the black cover. installed foil back tape on them. average 1500 miles every year, starter problems gone. but still have 3 months left to go on the xp. will report back in june.

Thanks, I will add some insulation tape too!

Has this happen on an 02 summit and my two buddies on their 01 summits. Recoils were garbage and a common problem. Not sure that there is a fix for it. Guy at the dealership told me to make sure the recoil is engaged before you reef on it to start the machine. I just picked up a used recoil and robbed the parts from it to fix mine.

TWO words!!!!!!!!

electric start!!!!!!!

I had it put on my xp and now will never have without!

After 20 minutes of digging yourself out on the top of a long steep slope and haveing to pull that cord, then its flooded, pull more! Glad thats only a memory! lol

I can push a button!! I can still pull a cord too, but I am 30 now and have to think of the future and save myself! lol:

;)

I remember 30....vaguely ;)
But that was 18 years ago.
If I could just force myself to lose 40 Lbs I would consider an electric start.

Oh come on now! Not 40 lbs, but still lots lighter than the buddys rides!

I get a kick out of the "big" guys putting all the light weight parts on there sleds when THEY are the ones 40 lbs overweight! lol

maybe I just wised up earlier than you ol farts! :p And by the way, all the guys I go west with are 45 to 60 year old.

You didn't try starting it with the clutch off? I made that mistake and it almost took my hand off when it backfired.

I think that it is WPS that make a rebuild kit for the newer ski-doo recoils. I paid 7 or 8 bucks for one this fall. Had the same thing happen after cleaning my recoil, I just assumed that I had put something together wrong.
