Oil hits $$ 50

Locomotive Technology

Alright, a locomotive gets about 400 mpg. I know, less rolling resistance, etc. I would love a duramax that uses that technology. A diesel motor that powers an electric motor is the most efficient system right now. Seattle has updated there Prius carpool with plug in power sources at $10,000 per kit(Seattle Times). I have heard that Ford has a small hybrid that cannot be sold in this country. It gets 70mpg in Europe. I know that we get most if not all of our electricty from the dams but there is a lot of coal burnt in this country to make electricity. A plug in Prius kit somewhere else in the country would require more coal to be burnt. A self contained system like the locomotives require no plug in, are more efficient, and have plenty of power to tow. Why is this technology not being invested in? A truck that gets 50mpg? You don't think that would sell like crazy?

Um, I don't think they get 400 MPG, more like 100 Gallons/hour.

Interesting reading.

This post has some interesting thoughts. The one thing I can say for sure, is that most of these post seem to be from what I would call "Western attitude" people. I'm from the west and work in the oilfield so I'm interested in what people think about the oil prices. I believe people in the west have a different outlook on life, be it for the better of worse. It seems every opionion in this post have the same message. We can not afford cheap oil from overseas if it cost Americans and Canadians jobs, and that is not the response you seem to get from the East coast. They are worried about the price for a gallon of gasoline, and heating oil not the price of jobs out west. I guess they don't figure the oilfield grunt is helping there wages when he is buying stock, life insurance, home loan, investing in there 401K, so forth and so on.
It is just one big wagon wheel..........what go's around comes around.
Lets all hope it gets better.
Just my 3-5 cents.

I agree, have some budds that are rough necks, Its great to see gas dropping but if it goes to far alot of buddies are going to be out of a job. Has to be a happy medium like in any market. Price needs to stay at a level where people can afford it, the workers making the product make enough to live and justify working. We had a huge swing where it was to high, this helped kick the economy in the nuts, now Its swinging to far the opposite way which is going to hurt us even more. Hope it evens out a bit for everyone, there are a ton of sledders that make their money of the oil industry.

$25 is the righteous pay back for raping this country like they did which effectively tipped this economy into a recession or worse.
But you are right, stable energy costs at affordable profits are a must and at 25.00 we will see a serious production reduction. Which will start the cycle all over again. $25.00 is to low, but the oil companies deserve it.

not being a dick here but that figure means 1 gallon of gas will move 1 ton of goods 436 miles. it does not mean the train get 436 miles per gallon. it may seem that way but a train moves more than 1 ton of goods at a time.
