Oil Change

Ok, first time "changing" oil in a snowmobile.

And the search function is so worthless on these new forums, it didnt find anything.

Anyway, is there a special oil I need to use? Does it have to be "Yamaha" oil?

EDIT: Looks like any 0W-30 oil should work? Full synthetic OK? How many quarts are needed for the oil change?

EDIT: Is this the oil filter I would need:

Is it as simple as drain the oil resiviour, and remove the oil filter..
Fill new oil filter w/ oil, reinstall, refill oil resivour?

Also, looking to change chain case lube, is there a "drain plug" on Yamahas (I have not looked yet)?

I haven't changed mine yet, but have heard many different things. The Yamaha 4S oil is 0W-30 weight & semi synthetic. It's also $7-8 a quart. Some people use Mobil-1 0W-30 and some say not to because it doesn't have a certain rating & I've even heard that Mobil says not to use it in snowmobile engines. Anyway, the filter, by their description looks right. I have heard not to use full synthetic until you reach 500 miles & I've also heard that the motor is done breaking in after 100 miles max. So I'm not going to be much help. I'm going to use the Yami 4S oil & Yama filter ($12) just to say I did it according to the book

You do have to drain both the crankcase & resivoir.

Where is the crankcase plug? under the bottom plastic as well, near filter?

I guess the Yamaha oil isn't too far off in cost then, the mobil 1 is ~7-750$ per quart (online) . .

I have ~1200 miles on my ride and the oil was changed once before I bought it (around 500 mi) I do believe.

I used HiFlow oil filter...HF-303, and Mobil1 Synthetic 0w-30 (3.3 qt's)

there is a link to the Shop manual...and it should answer most all, plus KILLER online resource...
yeah to get to the oil filter take off the plastic press rivet thing, and then slip her off...easy...

Holy crap the whole manual online and you can print it!! I'll be doing a little printing tomorrow at work!!! ;) That just saved me $80...
DJ looks like the chain case drain plug is right in the open in engine compartment...

yes it is, but make sure you drain both parts...the one on the oil reservoir, and the one in the engine...and when doing the one in the oil reservoir, make sure you take of hte side panel...or have a good funnel...will make a mess otherwise...

Thanks for the infos and pdf. :D

Found some other things to check into as well. Printed off a few pages too!

I've already had the oil res pulled off completely to fix the 'cracking' outlet issue.. I'll be going over that again this summer when I do the oil change.

So, I was looking, the manual says ~15,000? (or was it 25k?) miles per oil filter??? Do I really need to do the filter then if it was, presumably, done at ~500 mi?

oi!

not to threadjack, but is there a shop manual on the Apex for download as well?

Thanks in advance,
PistonBroke

yeah isnt that incredible...but I think you have a first service at 500 miles or soemthing that calls for oil change...and yeah, neither of us will probably ever do another oil change...I doubt I will get to 15000 miles on my nytro...

do not know about the apex service manual...found this one on TY forums...

If you fellas are boosted, change your oil every 500 to 600 miles. It gets a funky burnt smell. I run MCX for the last 1600 miles.

Mobil 1 or AmsOil are my suggestions, don't forget to change the filter!!!

yup with boost ever 500 miles.....doesnt take long for the oil to get nasty which isnt worth the risk IMO....

Oil filter

Pay particular attention to the o-ring seal on top of the oil filter. This has been discussed at length, but I feel it's important to mention it here as well. When pulling off the oil filter, my o-ring stuck (as has others) on the motor. Had I just put the new filter on, it would have been a poor seal and most likely come loose and drained everything out (as has happened to others).

Long story short, make sure the old filter's sealing ring is removed before installing the new filter.

My vote for Amsoil.....

Quick question, after reading the manual for oil change.

Do you add ANY oil directly to the engine (head)?

It mentions adding 2.1 qts to the oil tank, but later mentions that an oil change w/ filter will require 3.38 qts total..

So I'm confused on where i'm adding the additional 1.3 qts if the oil tank itself is only taking 2.1 qts.

When I changed filters on car/truck engines I'd fill the filter w/ oil before install, but i'm not sure it can be done (due to angle) in this situation.

Do I just add the 2.1 to tank, run (idle) it some, recheck level, add oil as needed?

Thanks!

yes, did you pull the drain plug on the bottom of the engine. There are 2 plugs
