Oh boy another space shuttle mission. Why?

Is it just me or have we been going up to space a lot lately. I've been wondering for a while why we are spending so much money on all of these missions? I thought we were broke..

Does anybody really believe it's to just to work on a stupid space station? I'm all for science but at what cost in this economy. Is NASA all private funds or are we flipping the bill here?

If we're spending money at all, then better spent on the space program with possible scientific spin-off's for the populus, than spending on worthless dubious social, and make-work programs. IMO.

I believe it depends upon the mission. The US pays for most of it I think. We also get a lot out of it, by pushing the bounds of science and technology. Lots of advances that we have come from NASA..

Very true.. I guess if were going to flush money down the tiolet, we might as well shoot it in to space.

The Space Shuttles are scheduled to be retired in 2010. there is a rush to get things finished on the space station before only the Russians have the capbility. We will not have a replacement for the shuttle until 2015 at the earliest.

PORK! Do we really care if the Russians finish that hunk of crap? I think a few geeks do but I don't get it. How much does it cost to go up there and add a new part?

It seems like trivial science at this point at huge cost when we have NO money. We have bigger fish to fry and we can get back to spending frivolous money later when we have it, if we have it.

Space exploration is the single most important thing anyone or anything on this planet should be doing.

I say let's have 100 more shuttle missions, let's stop spending so much money on lame *** pet projects, allow the privatization of the space industry and use that money on subsidies for it, and let's shoot for the stars.

The benefits of space explorations will indirectly benefit everyone on this planet.

There is nothing more important that the human species, as a whole, can do than find a way to get off this rock and inhabit intersteller space.

We will never have a replacement to the shuttle. Since we are now a third world country, we can not affort to build the next generation shuttle. Therefore, we will lost the heavy lift cabability of the shuttle and the ability to bring things back from orbit. Ares I is simply a space capsule and Ares V will never be built.

oh by the way...NASA is only about .7% of the budget, about a third of that is shuttle. To put things in perspective the stimuls package is worth about 700 shuttle launches...to date there have only been about 120 shuttle launches.

I think it's funny people talk about going green with everything and appaud the shuttle launches in the same breath. How much sh*t does that put out everytime we launch it? Space exploration is a waste. We don't live there and never will

Wheres the scalpel? I love how we use the biggest wasteful spending spree in history as the new level of spending.

I guess I'm on an island with this one.
