Mudslide blocks all lanes of SR 20 near Concrete
Date: Tuesday, January 08, 2008

CONCRETE - A mudslide is blocking both lanes of State Route 20 east of Concrete in Skagit County. Crews closed the highway and set up a detour route for drivers.

The highway will remain closed until daylight, when crews can better determine how and when they can clean up the highway and reopen it.

The detour will add an additional 20 to 40 minutes to commutes, and snow is on the road. If you are heading eastbound, the detour route is Concrete Sauk Valley Road to SR 530 to Rockport. If you are heading westbound, you will need to turn onto SR 530 west bound at Rockport and turn right onto the Concrete Sauk Valley Road to Concrete where you can get back on SR 20.

WSDOT maintenance crews are plowing the detour route, but drivers should be prepared for snowy driving conditions.

AJ---How long does it take from I-5 to the gate when the road is not detoured? And how will this detour affect start time if the road is not open? If the sled is done--I am thinking of picking it up when Steel Dreams opens and heading up to join ya all---Even Mr Prez. LOL.

H20SKE...

new membe to the forum so i am sure this question has been asked and answered but i cant find it and that is how far on the hwy20 can you ride??? someone was sayiing that you can ride up and down the pass and into winthrop????

my buddies(10 sleds) were thinking about doing this ride at somepoint but i want more info on the ride. thanks in advance
adam

Were meeting at the gate about 930. Normally I would say 1.5 hrs from I-5 and if the detour is still there, I'd add a 1/2 hr to your travel time.

Make it happen H2OSKE... It would be good to see you and the boyz

if the detour is still in place, we'll just head out through arlington/darrinton way - by-pass the detour....... anyone close to Hwy 9 will prolly do the same thing........

abomb,
You can only get within 15 or 20 miles of Winthrop!

ice cap, so there is no chance to get from west side to winthrop unless you trailer? that sucks, i was hoping we could stay the night in winthrop but guess not....who is doing the ride in febuary???
thanks

abomb - you can do the ride then drive to Concrete or Sedro Wooley for a motel - then ride baker the next day! :)

WSDOT website says road should be opened up by 6:00 PM today. They will have some lane closures on Wednesday morning for a couple hours. Should be OK by the weekend as long as there are no more slides.....

We're gonna have a great turnout!!!:D

Crews clearing mudslide on SR 20 east of Concrete; Lanes to open as early as tonight
CONCRETE - Crews hope to open State Route 20 this evening after clearing a mudslide that covered both lanes early this morning.
A 30-mile detour will remain in place until SR 20 opens again to traffic. The detour directs traffic onto SR 530 and county roads where drivers are likely to encounter snow or slush.
A WSDOT geological technician determined that the hillside was stable and safe for crews to start clearing the road below. They are using two excavators and five dump trucks to clear mud and logs. A safety officer is watching the work to make sure no more material comes off the hill.
Crews will only work during daylight hours. If they are unable to finish clearing by nightfall, they will continue the work in the morning.
Maintenance crews plowing SR 20 discovered the slide about 4 a.m. The mud came down with such force that it pushed seven 16-foot long concrete barriers into the middle of the road.
The area, where about 5,000 vehicles travel daily, is known to slide periodically in wet weather. Another mudslide covered the highway a couple of years ago about 800 feet to the west of the current slide.
Detour:
A detour is in place that will add up to 40 minutes to trips through the area. Be prepared for snow on the road. Eastbound drivers will take Concrete Sauk Valley Road to SR 530 to Rockport. Westbound drivers will turn onto SR 530 at Rockport and turn right onto the Concrete Sauk Valley Road to Concrete, then get back on SR 20.

###
Drivers can now get real time traffic and weather information by dialing 5-1-1 from most phones. This new traveler information system builds upon the highly successful Washington State Highway hotline that managed 4.6 million calls each year. Callers can also use 5-1-1 to get statewide construction, mountain pass condition, and state ferry system information, as well as toll free numbers for passenger rail and airlines. TTY users can call 1-800-833-6388.

Those pics sure look nice. I will be coming with one of my girls or my wife. The road will be cleared tonight and shouldn't be a problem. I will be coming up from the south and will go thru Darrington up to hwy 2 which is past the slide area anyway. See you all saturday!;)
