Noob question, is my belt ok?

Hi I am new to sleds, just got an 04 900 efi this fall. When I took it for the first ride I hit the gas and it went no more than a foot... I hit the gas a few more times and nothing so I figured I better stop. After getting off and scratching my head a few times I realized I had the parking brake on (ashamed). Anyway, I looked down and my stupid revving of the engine sprayed black bits of rubber (from the belt) onto my foot. Shoud I be worried about trusting the belt now? I have a spare belt to carry on the sled, but if it is probably going to break right away I'd rather just change it out and get rid of it ahead of time. Oh and I rode it up and down the road for probably 15 miles after doing this without any noticeable problems (first storm of the year).

you will start to notice a jerking on acceleration. pm free agent and she can get you a new 020 belt for a good price.

I actually did notice jerking on acceleration I was just such an optimistic noob I figured that was how it was supposed to be... good to know then and thanks for the info. My other spare belt is missing about 4 inches of teeth on it would I be better off carrying around that one or this one that has been worn down over all but no major damage to a certain area?

Thanks a lot!

Sounds like you need a couple new belts. Don't keep running it with chunks missing or flat spots on the belt, it goes hard on the clutch and drives.

You'll love the power
[FYI] Grease your drive-shaft, and jack-shaft bearings behind the secondary clutch.

Thanks for that tip, I really have no idea what kind of little maintenance I should be doing like that.

And good idea I might as well buy 2 new belts while I'm at it I honestly didn't even think of that...

Short story....

once upon a time... when I was flying across a side hill on my sled { his name is Mater} and then all "oh my heck" < its a utah county thing>...... broke loose , Mater came to a halt after i heard and felt a huge loud noise, violent shaking and the like, i was sure my sled had blown up and was totaled.....

then i put on a new belt and rode off into the sunset....the end...

peace-

the price of a new belt 50 ish
the price of a tow job (yes tow job) 50 in beer at the bar that night
the price of your crank out of phase Priceless.

now go buy two new belts and be done with it.

This would be my concern. Clutch damage and worse yet crank damage. Don't run thise belts get new ones. And as a habit grab the break every time you start the sled and take off. Good habit to have. You will not jump on a sled with the break on that way.

I would buy two belts if i was you. I would proably replace the spark plugs alos. When you store these sleds make sure you use some kind of fuel stabilizer or esle you will gum up your fuel pump.

at least with the price of belts the 020's are cheap. and yes i have made a few 50.00 mistakes.:(

900 belts

I've blown 2 or 3 belts when stuck and the rear of the track was jammed against a hard snow wall in the trench I made: God, i love the power of that motor!
Oh yea, Ive taken off with my parking brake on lots of times, and my pack open and goggles/gloves underneath the hood, sunglasses on the 'dashboard (which I never found), gas cap loose, hood not strapped which led to my can melting the side of my hood, etc, etc:eek:: Dont feel like the lone ranger!:face-icon-small-hap

ditto on the belt, as a "Newb" as you put it I thought you might like som advice on the sled.

with the kindof power it generates you will need belts on a regular basis. I buy two at a time and carry two spares, one in the belt carrier and one in the nose cone secured down. knowing you have a spare for your spare is good on a good powder day. the sleds are heavy and powerful if you get to playing and climbing too much you can heat stress a belt and it will blow apart. feel the clutches with your hands and get a feel for how long you can play hard befor damaging the belt, you will know when your clutches are too hot and when they are acceptably hot pretty quickly. if your clutches get really hot to frequently compared to your buddies, check your alignment and the health of your clutches

another thing if the speedo quits working that is a warning sign that the lower left drive shaft bearing need replaced. then keep an eye on this forum to learn a ton on this sled. but take the power mods with a grain of salt this sled really doesnt need any....thay are simply overkill - ;)
