NHRA's Scott Kalitta dies

OMG... I just saw the video. I dont want to be disrespectful, but I dont know how he could have even been taken to the hospital.

What is going on in NHRA, this seems to be a yearly event lately? I dont know how this accident could have even been prevented.

I dont know how any of those guys/gals could even get in their cars tomorow.....

it's on you tube horrific crash. he blows up at the finsh line at 300 mph, and just goes of the end of track at about that speed in to the wall and a huge fire ball. I don't know what they would of took to the hospital either very very sad.

Bad deal.

Why don't they have longer run out areas?
He may have survived the fire, but why would you place a cement wall there to instantly stop a car who's braking features failed?
Isn't that just ensuring the fatality of such an accident?
What am I missing here?

It's a very sad deal, my condolences to his family. It is a risk that you have to take when you work a dangerous job. I work a job that is dangerous, and am thankful when I come home every night.....As are all race car drivers, soldiers, law enforcement, etc. thankful at the end of the day. Sometimes morality just catches up with you sooner than it should.

As far as the sand trap. When they interviewed Tony Pedregon after the accident he commented on the lack of safety features for the track in terms of the shut down area. I think Englishtown is the shortest or one of the shortest sandtraps of any NHRA drag strip. I am sure that there will be measures taken to improve safety for the shutdown areas, it is just sorry that it takes a tragic event like this to make it happen.

As Snow Fox stated, it has one of the shortest sand traps on the circuit. He also went through the safety net. I haven't seen it confirmed, but he possibly also went through the wall into the trees. There is a lot of speculation floating around right now on what exactly happened.

This one hurts :(

what myself & others are probably asking is did the 1st initial explosion kill Scott or did the shortrunout have something to do with it...

Re:Scott Kalitta Dead.... 1 Hour, 24 Minutes ago
Terrible tragedy...

I know the track well as I was there as a spectator in '81 and '82. Scott raced one of the first A/FD on "pop" in '81, one of the very first to do so in the alcohol dragster ranks. In '82 he made his debut at the same track in nitro funny car.

The track ends rather abruptly after the sand trap and there is a wall with a road cutting across behind it. The road carries the competitors into the track pit area. In behind the road is a residential area. Because the track was there prior to the neighbors, the county mandated the track to build a wall the entire length of the drag strip in '82 to curb the noise. This track has some of the toughest noise restrictions in North America but is also one of the most successful. The track is located smack dab in NHRA Division 1 country.

When Scott's car did not stop (2nd explosion) after he hit the catch net, he would be in a lot of trees. I would not have wanted to be the paramedics on site after the impact......

Sincere condolences to his two young boys, his wife and his father, Conrad Kalitta.

Godspeed Scott. May you rest in peace!

Come on NHRA, PULL YOUR HEAD OUT !!!!

How many of these guys have to die before nhra pulls its head out and gets rid of nitro ??? I am tired of watching these guys get killed in outdated designs on 50 year old dragstrips. I am also tired of all the hyped-up races being decided by someone smoking there tires off the line, if they would get rid of the nitro the cars would only loose about 50 mph, the races would be much closer, the engines would seldom blow and NO ONE WOULD GET KILLED !!!!!!!!!

Watched the end of the race yesterday, was wondering what happened...:( Thats a horrific crash, RIP Scott...:brokenheart:
