New to colorado

My wife and I are moving to Colorado next spring. Boulder area. M
Any places near there to ride. Eldora area looks nice but not sure if its open to Snowmobiles

Welcome!

I went to High School in Illinois, but I got to Colorado as quickly as I could.

Look me up if you make it up to Grand Lake.

Don't mean to jack the thread from the OP, but my brother and I are in the same boat. Just us 2 out here, live in Denver, hoping to ride a little bit of everywhere throughout the area.

Boulder is a beautiful area, but not very sled friendly. Regardless, you are in the "city" so you will have to drive out. I'm not sure about Eldora, but if it is on FS land then I really doubt you can ride that area (maybe surrounding area). Vail Pass is a good place for newbs because of the trail system and wide range of riding terrain. But it is a circus, you have to be there early for parking and pay a daily $6 use fee. Grand Lake and Rabbit Ears are other options for someone just visiting Colorado. There are a ton of pocket areas but I suggest you get the feel for Colorado first.

If you are coming from Illinois or other non mountain riding area, I suggest digging in deep (no pun intended) and either taking an avy class or finding some solid ridding people to help you get acclimated to Colorado riding. Even getting unstuck can be a chore if you haven't done any mountain riding. You could be the Burandt of Illinois for all I know so don't be offended if I'm telling you something you already know.

Visit Colorado Snowmobile Association. (CSA) for local club details, trail status and links to more info.

Make sure you have an Avy beacon, probe, shovel and other gear!

Im about 20 miles north of Boulder and do most of my riding in the Snowy Range west of Laramie, WY. No traffic to deal with and only 2:30 hrs from home. How come Boulder?

Sorry to hear that... You have a 2 stroke, you will not be warmly welcomed to Boulder. When I moved out here that was my first stop as well. Thank god I'm no longer there. Beautiful place, and extremely ugly (on the inside) people. Hope you got lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!! Closest riding is Cameron pass, west of foco. Everything is 2.5 hours at least from Boulder.

Boulder is nestled between the mountains and reality. Beautiful place but as I'm sure you know...not exactly full of power sports enthusiasts.

Snow depth and politics makes close riding difficult so just plan on 2-3 hours of driving to get to the good stuff. I'm 30 miles from Boulder and usually choose to go to the Snowies. Once you are past Ft Collins the traffic dies off and its a great area with lots of country. The East side is the closest and parking is busy on weekends so go early. We leave at 6:00 and are unloading at 8:00. Colorado has great spots as well but sometimes battling the traffic on I-70 getting into and out of the hills is bad.

You have a ton of riding options here, just be prepared to escape the front range to get to them.

I've been going to Colorado for 20+ years for ski trips with wife and kids. As far as I'm concerned its the best state the US has. We r going to Boulder because my wife can transfer there for work and Colorado is where we want our final stop to be. Been riding in Wyoming for a couple years so I'm not a bad rider, I can hold my own except an occasional tree getting in my way. I spoke with the forest service today. No place to ride around Boulder/eldora. Have to go west of divide unless I road ride a handffull of seasonal roads. Boring.
Thanks for the input. Maybe someday I'll run into out there.

I live between boulder and longmont I go ride grand lake and snowy range i like both areas they are both about a 2:30 hour drive even from denver its still not a bad drive to a few places but no matter where you are in the metro area its gonna be a couple hour drive no matter where you go i really like going to snowy range to me that is an amazing area to ride i wish i went there more

We could also go closer to Denver. She has office there. Any suggestions

boulder is a greenie shxt hole, i would go as far away from there as possible. denver has way better options to get to the front range goods. unless you want to get hassled for owning a diesel truck, paying tons of extra money for registration/etc. trust me, i grew up in boulder 30+ yrs. it USED to be a nice place, now it is a liberal junk show where the sheriff and city council make it up as they go. i would seriously think twice about spending any of your hard earned money in boulder county!

the peoples republic of boulder is a great place if you bought your house or land 25 years ago.. Land value is crazy. My wife grew up in Boulder and it took everything I had in me to open her mind so she could see how crazy that little place is. We moved from Erie (Burb of Boulder) to DT Denver and I would never look back. So far been to Summit county 4 times in past three weeks. 1 hour 50 min to 2 hour 10 min from shop to unload area. I-70 has changed quite a bit and with the new traction laws / toll lanes I am back riding summit county instead of driving to WY. Just have to be on the road no later than 6AM and be ready to make a very long day or be headed back before 2PM

I live in Boulder, ride 2 stroke, and drive a big diesel truck, you can't give in you gotta fight the good fight, might is right! On a big front range dump you can ride Rollins pass road and either side of it. But I mostly drive to either corona, snowies, Georgia pass, or Jones pass to ride. With the exception of Rollins pass your 1.5 to 2 hours from great riding.

If I were going to live north of Denver it might be Longmont, that town seems to have their S&*t together. Municipal Broadband, decent city services and convenient to Boulder and Denver. I live in Westminster/Arvada and I do like the access to the mountains but you have to plan your drive times to avoid ski traffic. Some Sundays we just have Dinner in the mountains and drive back after 6-7pm.
