Sonora Conditions

Jim guess there isn't any. Got 2 " Friday, Gone now Web cam at Dodge Ridge showed no snow in the tree's at the top Sat. morning. They stopped grooming ops. on the Hwy bare spots showing! This SUCKS!!!:face-icon-small-sad

Does anyone know the story of what's up with that weird path mapped out that keeps sleds from crossing the pacific crest trail right off the pass proper?

I know that was part of the winter rec area plan from a few years ago but what's the concern with crossing a summer hiking trail when it's under several feet of snow? Is that just some by product of a general OHV designation meant for motos?

It ends up closing off some zones that aren't even wilderness. Not a huge deal but definitely kinda weird.

Few years back greenies tried to close area and "claimed" sleds crossing the trail eroded the trail and a hundred other reasons motorized access should not be allowed.

So the anti sled groups has been trying to setup areas with boundaries so riding areas cannot be accessed.

Because the entire Carson-Iceberg, Emigrant, and Hoover wilderness areas that are all right off the pass just aren't quite enough right?

That's what I figured, I've just never seen anything like it......even in California. We cross the PCT in several other places up around Tahoe. And yup....definitely not doing a thing to it under 7 feet of snow.

I'd love to know the history of what happened there a little better. I admit I didn't ride there a whole lot when this was going on. If I had I would have been a little more involved. Most importantly, I'd LOVE to see a photo of the PCT there somehow eroded by sled traffic in the past.

Sonora Pass

Well thats a deep subject thats for sure. I live on the west side of the Pass. We ride it alot over the last 25 yrs. . They the Feds like to change it all the time BUT. When go up on the Saint Mary's trail head side the boundary is the Ridge Line all the way at the top. On the other side it's all open to the ridge also according to what we were told at the begining of this year. But it depends on who tells you !! A different story from everyone. The story I go by is from the guy's over in Bridgeport at the USFS. They seem to know, This side dosn't know SH!t. The latest we have heard of is now we (snowmobiler's) are packing down the Meadows and the Squerrils can't get out the meadows. Last I knew they live in the tree's, at least around my house they do. The enviro's must know something that anaimals don't know. Let's just ride and in joy !!! The maps are as only go as the people that made them!!!:face-icon-small-win

I would say it's the FS keeping firm on the 15"-18" snow coverage requirement for grooming. I rode from the west side of 108 up to Eagle Meadows on 3/10 and there were a few small areas of pavement showing through, and there were no signs of recent grooming there either.

Anyone have a report from the east side 108? Think it's still doable to park and ride up to Sonora Pass from the east gate?

Sonora Pass

Ya, Like Steve said, Even when there was enough they didn't groom, Don our groomer guy was stopped middle of Jan.. You know as well as I thats B^llsh&t. We need to get Dave M out of there he's the problem!! Maybe we need to setup a meeting with the new Forest Ranger up at Pinecrest and see if we get sh&t changed. Have about 4 or 6 of us show up and see what they have to say. We did this about 10yrs ago with about 25 folks and it helped ! :face-icon-small-dis

My good buddy was up there sunday demo'ing some new skidoos. He said they were launching at the second gate above the switchbacks on the eastside and there was a lot of pavement past there and the snow was "Awful". Ill ask if he has any pictures

As of March 30, report I received for the West side was "done". Nothing but PAVEMENT past the gate. The fellas who ride up there passed this on to me.

Sonora Conditions

Word from the west side caltrans guys, They haven't heard anything about the eastside since last week. Gate was still closed at the M.Base.
Westside is going to start making there way toward Kennedy Meadows next week. If they can keep equip. running. Blower problems yesterday! Sometimes east side starts before our guy's ! Thats all I got!
