new family dog

Law enforcement dogs are out of control and overworked IMO.
They pull on leashes, bark all day in the vehicle and they get yelled at everyday by control freak handlers.
Maybe that is a great law enforcement dog, I dunno.
Now the drug sniffer dogs, different story. Nice little mellow beagles sniffing luggage all day in search of drugs, just to get a treat!!!
I know that I don't wanna get bit by a German shepherd officer.
I like how the cops let the dog knaw on the perps limbs for a while. Only when they deserve it of course.
Off topic, sorry. Add kicked in.

I had a female Doberman years ago before we had kids. She had been returned to the breeder due to her supposed "bad behavior" but didn't behave any different than any other energetic young dog.

When our first was born my brother thought we should get rid of the dog and insisted that she would harm the baby.

Couldn't have been further from the truth. She treated that baby like it was her own. Slept beneath his crib. Paced outside the bathroom door when he was bathed. Pushed him away when he got too close to the stairs. Guarded the stroller. Etc etc. for 9 more years until she left us at the age of 12.

So far she is great. Other than the odd lego piece that goes missing and the rocks she constantly tries to eat.

Good luck on your new dog, we just got a new one too after the vet killed one of ours.

If you have a herding group dog with white feet be careful of what drugs are given to it.

I apologize for asking, could you share your story.
Sorry for your loss BTW.

Thanks,
We had a sable Sheltie, she was 11 and we took her into have her teeth cleaned and thought one tooth would have to be pulled. They only cleaned her teeth and called my wife to say she was fine and to come and pick her up in a few hours.

When the wife got there the Vet told her that our dog had just thrown up and he gave her a drug to keep her from vomiting again. My wife's a nurse and asked him what the drug is, she hadn't heard of it. It turns out that herding group dogs with white feet can have an mdr1 gene. This makes them sensitive to certain drugs. Our sheltie overdosed and died the next morning.

We bought our new Sheltie from a breeder that has breed out the mdr2 gene.
