Just got a female Pitbull pup, she is a purebred American Pitbull Terrier. Who else has one of these beautiful animals? I was skeptical about adopting her but we have a 10 year old female Yellow Lab that will help raise her into a gem. I also did a lot of reading on the breed, just sounds like they have been given a bad rap by bad owners and the media.

I agree with blitz, but even the ones I have been around aren't really people dogs.

Almost any breed can be made mean, the Pits I've been around have been really great sweet dogs!

Its all in how they are raised. Good looking pup!

I agree 100%. You can raise any breed of dog to be vicious, or loveable.

I will personally never own one, just because when you see a person walking a Pit the first thing you think of is "Is it vicious". People are much more likely to be afraid of it than say a lab.

A dog is the product of its environment. While its true that there are breeds that take to particular things more so or better than others, at the end of the day how loveable, personable, protective or aggressive they are is dependant on how you raise him/her, and how you treat them. I myself have a great dane that i rescued from a sherriff's dept. that was viciously abused by her previous owner. Hence why she was at the sherriff's. When i brought her home she was deathly afraid of absolutly everything, would bite anyone who tried to do anything that even kind of felt like a restrainment, and if you cornered her she would crouch cower and pee. Fast forward 2 years of intesive working with her, lots of love and training, and she is a whole new dog. Absolutely loves everyone, has the most adorable personality, even likes to tease one particular guy at work. Fast forward another 2 years, and youd never know this dog had ever been beaten by her previous "owners".

Point being here is dont let anyone convince you that any breed, or any particular dog is "damaged goods". A dog is whatever you make them to be, how you structure their lives, disciplin, and their place in the family is all of great import. Some breeds are more hyper than others, some are better with kids, but at the end of the day how aggressive one is, is completely dependant uppon how and what you reinforce.

As others have stated it's all about their environment. I have a friend with a purebread pit and he is the biggest baby in the world, wouldnt hurt a fly, great with his kids, just a big teddy bear. We recently adopted a lab/pitbull mix puppy and he is turning out to be a GREAT dog. He listens very well, is great with our kids, will bark if someone comes in the yard that is new but has shown no signs of being agressive. He also isnt as hyper as a typical lab.

"A dog is the product of its environment" Agree, no different than people, sprinkled with minor DNA exceptions. The problem is, dog/pets are hopeless and dependent to their enviroment, hence, those that abuse them deserve greater punishments, when found guilty, than what is currently in place.

Treat 'em like a member of the family and they become a member of the family. With love, your pooch will be fine.

I wouldn't own one for a family dog.
Solely based upon the damage it can inflict in a "week moment". Good animals that are raised well can still snap. And if/when they do, the damage they can inflict to a small child can be un reparable.
This goes for all large breed dogs bread for protection or not. I love dogs but choose not to own one untill my kids ( 2,4 and another due in august) are a little older.

You are correct, that even the best dog may make snap at someone in an off moment. However, I can't conceive for a moment that the victim would be a child it was raised with. Most dogs would give their own life protecting a child in the family.

Lots of other children around when raising a child... Friends, sleep overs, birthday party's etc..... Not worth the risk.

I have several firends with, and have been acquanted with many large breed dogs. In my expirience, you are more likely to be bitten by a small breed, and attacked by a medium breed. Every large breed, and i mean every, that i have been around tiptoes when small children are brought into the room. I know personally 3 great dane, or great dane mixes and they are the most gentile dogs i have ever been around. A local here used to breed english mastiffs, and the same way, gentile, if they were to harm a child it would only be from knocing them down due to their size and clumsyness.

A guy should not be afraid of a large breed just because of their size. Given all of the various dogs i have owned or had a part of raising, i would take a large breed over any other without pause or second thought.

I prefer Jewish dogs over gentile dogs.....

Ask yourself this question. How much jaw pressure does the average Pit Bull have?
