New 900 owner.. Few questions

Just wondering if you found your tester?? Do I have to pull the TB's to do this test or can it be done with them still attached?

Any ideas on the lighting?? How would I change the back lighting to red from the blue and does it mean something??

Thanks for all the help!!!

No u should be able to keep the throttle bodies in place. To change the backlight from red to blue and vise versa u hold the green toggle on the left side of the handlebars up for about 5 seconds then release and it will change. the red backlight reads the rpms on the dial gauge and the digital gauge reads ur speed. then the blue backlight is opposite (dial=mph, digital=rpm)

No problem. Its going to be easier to set the baseline on the tps with them out but i know u can do it with them in.:beer;

Sorry, forgot to look in the toolbox at work, it should be there I just need to put my eyes on it.

I believe if you hold the mode button in the down position it changes the speedometer to the tach or viceversa.

You are probably right, I said "I believe".
I gotta be wrong once in a while to meet quota.:D

Alright, went and checked the compression. PTO side is between 105 and 110 and the MAG side is right at 100.. Seems to be low, but not much different in the 2.. Probably need some new pistons and rings for both sides.. Any recommendations? I know OEM is probably the best, but whats next?? I heard the SPI were good, but not sure about on the 900's.

On a side note, its UP on the green button to switch them..:D Thanks for all the info.. I am learning more every day.

just put the stock pistons back in they are the best choice. pretty good price at babbitts online http://www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbrands/14/80493/707042/default.aspx

975 Kit???:D Ive always had good luck with wiseco pistons but never put them in the 900 so i cant say for sure. Have heard good things about SPI. Make sure the cylinders are in good shape too. U never know how they r gonna look especially when u buy a sled used and u didnt put all the miles on urself. Many people dont warm their sleds up enough (cold seizures)Someone else mite be able to help u out a little more with this.

OEM isnt too badly priced.. May have to go that route.. Should I order the 06 ones or has the fiche been updated with the 06 pistons?

SPI seemed to be the way to go on the Edge chassis, but I thought I remembered reading the OEM 05 pistons were crap and the SPI was an exact replica.. SPI is cheaper than OEM..

im not exactly sure what u r looking at for parts lookup but i would definitely make sure u r ordering the 06 pistons.

all the 05 pistons have been on the parts list to the 06..so you dont have to worry about buying 05s on accident..."hopefully" lol..

Thats good.. I would always double check the part #'s between the 2 before I ordered anyway... Anyone know if the SPI's took the 06 design also or if they are still an 05 replica?

my understanding is the spi's are a copy of the 05 pistons that is why most guys wont use them.

From all the research I have been doing on these motors, it seems that the factory '06 pistons are the most commonly sought for replacements, and no, the 05s aren't even available any more.

and ya, switching UP will change between speedo and tach:):beer;

This is all very useful info, thanks guys. I'm in the same boat as yz400ex. I just bought my first 900 last week, an 05, and mine is doing the exact same thing with the low idle and the gauges flickering. I have also noticed that the tb boots are cracked, should I replace them before I do the tps reset or not? Also, when I first fire it up, the service engine message flashes for a few seconds and then goes out. What does that mean? Thanks again for all the great posts, I too am learning more everyday.

Yes! Change the boots. They are sucking air not taken into calculation by the computer which will cause a lean mixture. On the service engine light, i think all u have to do is use the green rocker switch on the left side of the handlebars to find the service indicator and reset it and it will let u set the next time u want the light to turn on (i turned mine off) i believe u reset it by holding down for about 5 seconds then releasing and then press down to set ur service increment. At least im pretty sure thats how u do it.:D Anyone else think thats right or wrong?

Check this thread too..specifically the post about putting heat resistive tape between your y-pipe and throttle body boots..will shed the heat that cracks them..

good luck on your 9..let us know if you need more info..cause you will ;)

welcome to snowest as well
