K, my buddy, who rides a dragon, seems to think that the Suzuki M 800 motor has the worst track record of all 800 class motors. I need your thoughts please.

I'm only posting this in both forums to get both AC and Polaris riders honest opinions to try and keep it as unbiased as possible.

just the motor?? umm I sure have seen a lot of broke cf4 poo 800, and not to many suzu 8's break, like 1 lol

The cf4 polaris 800 is a horrid excersise in the "tryin stuff that just does not work and fixing it with a useless bandaid" method development. Now I only base this on owning a engine shop for 25 years, and seeing bout everything known to man done to motors, good and bad. i own Polaris and prob always will but have built quite a few suzuki and yamaha dragbike motors, they are pretty much a GREAT design,in both 2 and 4 stroke ...IMHO

Oh and the kawasaki 2 stroke 500 and 750 triples in dragbikes are also a excellent motor

i'd say the cat (suzuki) 800 motor by far has the best rep of any 800 two stroke motor for reliability. but look at the competition, skidoo enough said, polaris, the crank breaking 800 of the early 2000's and then the dragon 800, probably the worst 800 anyone has made this century. the pro 800 seems to have been a good motor so far but with only one season on it time will tell. there are gonna be more new pros out this year than any other sled by far so we'll see!!! know i've got almost 2k on mine and besides a fuel injector problem it has been totally reliable. by far the best sled i've ever owned, can't wait for the pow to come to ride it again:) all have problems, anything used as hard as a snowmobile motor is going to go down here and there. since the 01 800 motor don't think suzuki has made a motor that wasn't one of the best. with arctic cat headed the way of the heavy 4 stroke tanks, probably won't see another sled after the proclimb with a suzuki motor in it.

jap 2 strokes kick ***...It is a cryin shame yamaha never put there tz 750 in a sled god that thing ripped on the track..you could not break it.

my cat buddies (two) have not had a single engine prob with a M8. Seen a m7 cyl with nicasil plating coming off once. Doo and poo definately have a worse rep than cat.

Just have to pipe in here on the worthless cf 4 motor , not saying they had no problems and might have needed the up date but how do you tell the people that currently have thousands of miles on them with no problems thats its the worst ever?

Ive had a friend with a D8 burn down at 3100 miles and another friend with a 2011 M8 burn down at 400 miles. Not saying the D8 is better, (I think that motor is way more sketchy than any arctic cat M8) thats just the personal experience ive had with these sleds. But i am oposed to the diamond drive system becasue ive seen way too many buddies out for a few weeks from breaking them. The M8 motor itslef is GREAT!

Because the engineering of the engine was very very poor, yea some run 2000 miles and some run 25, but look at it this way, a race motor can be a perfect engine in all respecs but have a service life of 5 passes on the 1/4 mile, its still a great motor for its intended use. The intended use of the sled engines is for pleasure, its NOT pushed to the limit,it is made to run for many many miles trouble free, be it along a trail or offroad. Just running and running for years trouble free with no issues. When a engine is sold with its clearances set at numbers when new that are over the clearance of where I would throw it in the trash heap.....well....thats a HORRIBLE engine.
Fueling issues with the injector array I could (kind of) understand but there is no excuse for any manufactuer to sell a motor totally out of spec with issues that make it in a sence wore out before it starts its service life..period
So yes it is a bad engine IMHO

My dragon was terrible. The M8's I ride with were pretty much bomb proof. I really wish I could put a cat motor in my pro.
How many Cat guys want to trade out the Suzuki for a Polaris 800? Answer is 0. Not biased or being a jackass, but I rode a Pro 800 two weekends last year and loved it. I've never owned a Polaris, but motor was extremely soft compared to a 2011 M8 Sno-pro

I think that the CFI4 is a great motor at high altitude with a high compression head. They really like the head change. Mine ripped for 1,200 miles with not a single problem to the cylinders (I did have a sensor go bad). That being said it's obvious that so many others had the dreaded burn down. I liked that sled but the M8 has been much more reliable. Now the Diamond Drive is another topic...(how many chain case failures have there been?)

Well the Polaris 8 can feel a little soft due to clutching. I have installed a Team TIED secondary on my sled and dad is running stock. My sled feels so much more responsive and "Alive" than his. Not much difference going up the hill but its all right there when you want it. That is all due to backshift charactoristics. So...I don't really think the Polaris "New" 800 motor is a dog as much as you can get more out the clutching.

By they way, I have only lost one 800 motor and it was in an Edge chassis that I didn't summerize and ended up with rust on crank bearings. MY fault, not Polaris. Other than that I have never seen a 800 go down. That's not saying the M8 Suzuki motor isn't more reliable. It probably is/was in comparison to the D8 motor. Suzuki and Yamaha build good strong reliable stuff. They don't like to have to fix things. That's kinda the way american manufacturing used to be.

there was/is a polaris dealership up in maine that had hundreds of 800 pistons linning the walls, all were from cfi4's that had been rebuilt.

The pro 800 has seemed pretty good so far. I think everyone is in agreement the the dragon 800 needed some work in the reliable department. The Suzuki 800 has pretty much been bomb proof since it came out.

i am a cat guy with a new pro and i can also say i wish pro body with m8 motor,it would be the best sled ever imo the m8 motor flat out rips with no problems and easy mods and polaris primary clutch, cats sucks :boxing:
