Have a new Samsung TV coming and am also going to get a blu ray player and was wondering what the best bang for the buck is?

Thinking maybe PS3 but not sure with the additional cost and I am not a real big gamer but I will be at home for the next two months due to a snowmobile indecent that broke my back.

Any help is appreciated

I would still go with the PS3. You said you don't game, but....there are some games that I'm sure you would get into. My aunt never played any games ever, but then my cousins (from my other aunt) came over with some games and got her into some of them. She plays some strategy games (can't remember which ones) and she has a blast.

What I'm saying is, to buy a regular player, you can't play games even if you wanted to. But with the PS3, you always have the option if you ever feel the urge.

I know the prices differ, but to me, it would be worth it.

I can second the PS3, the blue ray software on it can be upgraded where as most other stand alone blu rays cannot.

Also a feature I like about mine is you can set up a share between your PS3 and your computer wirelessly and show all your pictures, videos, and music from your computer to your ps3 which then plays on the bigscreen, no more crowding around a photo album to see a cool snowmobile trip anymore, its great, its basically a computer for your entertainment centre, its alot more than a blue ray/gaming system. I have not touched my sony in about 6 months for games, but its used all the time, for the difference in dollars, you get alot more bang for your buck, and you can stream your computer **** to your bigscreen high def tv :D

I'd probably agree with the PS3. But make sure your TV is 1080. If it is 720, then you won't get Blue Ray quality and you would be wasting your money.

This comment confuses me???? Is this something to do with the PS3?

The difference between 720p and 1080p on anything less than a really large screen is hardly noticable... From what I've seen anyway...

However the difference from 480p to 720p is pretty noticable....

I vote against getting a PS3 if you do not game. When DVDs got popular and the Ps2 first came out I bought one so I could watch movies and play a game once and while. my ps2 had crap video quailty than a stand alone DVD player. and I am willing to bet the same thing is happening with the blu-ray in the PS3. I wound up getting a Cambrige audio auzur 540D dvd player. It was more money than PS2 but the picture quality is out standing for standard def. I am waiting for them to make a blu-ray. My advice to you would be to look at Blue ray at a real live AV store, not best buy, tweeter, ect. An actual AV store will have the players set up the way they should be and will let you actually demo them. Look into brands such as Denon, Marantz, pioneer elite, panasonic. For recommendations I would look at this site... www.avsforum.com.. they are like the snowest of home theater.

This is what I do for a living...Home Electronics. Samsung with a good Contrast Ratio and 120 hz. 50,000:1 if you are looking at a LCD. We are to high in elevation for Plasma.

I use like brands with the Blu-Ray, meaning Samsung. Hook it to your internet connection to upgrade software. I rarely see Samsungs go bad. I am also a Klipsch, Samsung, Marantz dealer. Also GPS, energy management consulting etc. Yes, possilby a nerd. But I have alot of cool toys......

Gaming is not bad but the movie part will be number one.

Is the PS3 a good Blu Ray player or the stand alone $220-$250 players better?

I have a PS2 and don't mind playing games it is just not number one for me.

About the 80gb playing ps2 games, I believe they do. I got a 40 gb because the 2 80 gb ps3's before that had a combined life of 6 days. I have heard of others having trouble with the 80 gb ps3s as well.

PS3 is better at playing blu ray than ps2 is for DVD....

X2, if I remember right, as I am a pretty big gamer (xbox tho...), the ps3 runs all their games off of blue ray disks. If you ever see some of these games ran in true 1080p, you will see that the processing power and output quality of the blue ray in the ps3 is very good, afterall sony is who started blueray, they're own products should have an advantage in playing them or at least know how to play them well.

The nice thing about any of the new gaming systems (note gaming, so exclude the wii now....:D) is that they come setup for home entertainment. Like someone said above, you can stream video and pictures and stuff to your tv, which is really nice at times. It was one of the main reasons I bought a xbox360 was so that I could "complete" my home electronics system, integrated things I was struggling to do on my own and it was all in one package now with simplicity at mind.

Now that I hve upgraded to a top of the line Sony 40", the last thing I need yet is a blue ray player, and as soon as I am ready to buy one it will be a ps3.

If you want a Blu Ray player then definitely go with PS3. For the money it is hands down the best bargain when you consider how capable of a computer on its own it is. Wifi net surfing, ease to update with wifi, media center, upconverting DVD player, upscale Blu Ray player, and gaming console is tough to beat. It also has the capability to match the frames per second of blu ray which many blu ray players cant.

I am picking one up this week. I would have one already but my old 52" DLP was only 720 so i was interested in strictly gaming on it and the X360 is a better gaming console.

Just mounted up my new Sony 52" KDL52V5100 last night and on my X360 it is so nice having the 120Hz.

I meant that I agree getting a PS3 for a blue ray player.

I then said that if you have 720p, you won't get blue ray quality so it would be a waste of money. You need a 1080p TV to make use of the blue ray player.

Agreed, above 40" I would go with the 1080P, below that the progressive scan (P) rate refreshes the TV just fine.

If you are going for the sports and gaming - 120hz and the 1080p for faster refresh. the new samsund LCD's with LED backlight are out. NICE.....

Go with the PS3 Kurtis.... What is cool with it is you can download videos to it.... The first thing i would do is upgrade the HD. I put a 300G in mine... I know the old 80G were backward compatible, but the 40's were not. I think the new 80's are, but am not 100% sure...

The cool thing with the PS3 is you can hook it up to your router and it will update the FW when sony puts out the updates... Keeping it compatible with the latest and greatest FW and SW....

As others have said, I hope you got a 1080p TV... Once you watch a 1080p movie, you will have a hard time watch a normal one:eek:

Boy does **** rock in HD:eek::D:beer;
