I have an 05 800 rmk that i have owned since new. Over christmas i decided to blow it up.. I've asked around and it sounds like its ganna cost just over 2 grand to fix it.. My question is, should i fix it? I like the sled but i would much rather have an iq. I found one i could get for around 5500. If i fix it i would feel like i would have to ride it for awhile. So should i try and sell the chassi or part it out. or should i just fix it and ride it? Let me know what you think please.

If you are ready to go newer, I would part it out for sure and move on. On the flip side, I love my edge chassis and rebuilt mine last year, and my boy just snapped a crank in his Prox a week ago and it is almost ready to go back together. Yes, about $2000 to build it back up right. But, have a better than new motor in each case, and will ride them for another 2-3 years making it worthwhile to me. But since you are looking to move to the newer sleds, you will not recoup your investment if you make the switch anytime soon.

My only thing is, that if i part it out, my seasons over for this year.. Thanks for opinion though. Guess i'll just have to choose whether i wanna ride this year or have an iq next year..

I'd fix it... You know the history of the sled... and you are comfortable riding it.

IMO, PM Indy Dan on the forums here and get one of his Torquemaster Short blocks for around 800... a fully built engine waiting for your accessories to bolt on.. It is about $2500 ...but it has a transferrable 5 YEAR warranty...

His motors flat out hold together..

A new stock crank and other parts puts it back to some problems that are inherrent in the motor... Indy Specialties motors fix those problems plus add to the resale value and give you peace of mind in the backcountry.

That might be an option..
My crank is still good. I had the bigger bearing put on about 2000 or so miles ago.. It's everything else pretty much.
This is whats in the quote i got
2 new cylinders
2 new pistons
head gasket
rings and all the other stuff in the top end.

The bottom end is suppose to be holdin up good. So do you think it's worth it to get the motor from indy dan? I love my sled. Its just the iq's are really nice... And i know the history of the iq as its my uncles sled. and only has 500 miles on it..
Sorry im such a pain the a** on this. :o
But i truely do appreciate all the input.
Thanks guys

In that case, rebuild it for sure!!! We thought you broke a crank like all the high milage ves motors. You can get your cylinders redone for about $200-250 each and aftermarket piston kits for half of poo parts. You should be able to put that back together for well under $1000. Get it done and get back out there.

Yeah should be able to get your cylindars replated for around $400-500 and can get a rebuilt kit off ebay with new pistons and gaskets for $200-250
Do it yourself not all that hard. But you need to figure out why you took at both cylidars? sounds like you had an oil or fuel problem.

i dont know a lot about motors. but i have a little knowledge.. But saving 1000 bucks sounds pretty good.. haha. Isn't balancing everything pretty tough?

Going thru the same thing on my '04 800.....What ruined your top end? Lack of oil, jetting, broken exhaust valve? You need to correct whatever went wrong....

After that, rebuild for sure, use replated cylinders and aftermarket pistons and it won't be that much....

to my understanding it was the string on a belt i blew got wrapped around a bolt on the clutch and caused it to go? Does that sound like a possibility?

Yep!!! My boy just did the same thing. It can wrap around the end of the crank between the primary clutch and the cases. If you don't get it all out of there (which he didn't) it can take out the crank seal and cause the pto piston to run lean and burn it up. Not REAL common, but it does happen often enough.

Alright sweeett!
soo what do you think the most reliable brand out there is for pistons and cylinders?

The spi or parts unlimited pistons work well and the price is right. Like someone else said, there are alot folks offering complete kits on ebay really cheap.

As for the cylinders, there is u.s. crome, millenium and many others that will fix any deep gouges in them and then re-nicasil them. Many shops offer an exchange service so you don't get your own back, but will we back up in running in just a couple of days. If your motor is stock and not ported, I would go the exchange route and get back on the snow.

I've had real good luck with SPI pistons. I go through See Doo Clinic. I think they will exchange cylinders also.
