Need some advice please

Sounds like she may have accidentally had the park brake on. You even mentioned yourself that it couldnt have been unnoticed due to the obvious feeling of the brake being dragged, but the parts show differently. She should have noticed that the brakes were dragging like that regardless of the cause. Probably just an honest mistake. It happens. Youll be lucky to get warranty on that, but good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

The brake wasn't dragging. The sled was performing perfectly. There were absolutely no indications that the brake was even being applied.

I hate to say it, but I think most of us have left a brake on once upon a time. My buddies wife did the same thing once, I we are soooo lucky it didn't go up in flames as hot as it was. Only caught it cuz we all stopped and the guys smelled it immediately. I hope they so warrenty it for you, but I would not hold my breath.

Sounds like we might have bought at the same dealer.

I bought a brand new sled a few years back and on one of my first rides one of the little plastic pins that hold the throttle lever in place broke off. I went in to talk to the parts guy at the dealer he told me that he wouldn't just give me the replacement part so that I could fix it (an .87 cent part that snaps in). There was no way I was going to drive back out to my house, trailer my sled and drive the 70 miles round trip to the dealer and back for .87 cents. After much jumping up and down and turning to walk into the owners office so he could mediate, he stammered his way to a different answer. Anyway, good luck with your situation, I hope it turns out for you. The thing I don't get is that these dealers aren't losing anything on warranty work, the manufacturer pays the bill. All I know is that next time I'm handing someone 11K for a toy, I'm going to go somewhere else that will treat me with some courtesy.
Tear it up!

A common misconception

To Q - Tell your wife that if she loved the sled with the brake on shes gonna LOVE, i mean LOOOOVVVE that thing with the parking brake OFF. Have fun, haha

Then why the worn out pads and cracked caliper?

I didn't say the brake WASN'T being applied...just that it wasn't noticeable at all. My point in all of this is that the emergency brake was not engaged. I know all signs point toward that, but there must have been some kind of malfunction that caused the brake to be applied, however slight it was.

Unfortunately, now this thread has turned into everyone's opinion on what my wife did or did not do, so that's all I'm going to post on the matter here. If anyone has any like situations or advice they can give me on this one, feel free to PM me.

Thanks guys.

If the sled was able to be ridden with the parking brake applied, I would be demanding that the braking system be fixed under waranty. If the excessive wear was caused by the brake pads dragging due to some other problem, I would be demanding that the braking system be fixed under waranty.

My $0.02.

sometimes you can ride for a bit with the parking brake on and not notice. different sleds have tougher parking brakes, a few years back at arctic man i left my parking brake on and melted a hole in the bottom of my oil tank, i never really felt like my brake was on until i saw smoke.

From a mechanical stand point, the only two ways the brake can "hold on" is if it was a hose failure where part of the rubber cracks internally holding brake fluid pressure on the caliper kind of like a check valve, this usually happens when hoses get old not likely on a new machine. The other way is if the caliper piston seized or got scored internally causing the brake to hold also, i have seen this as a manufactured defect. Remember as the rotot gets hotter the effectiveness of the pads deteriorate, exactly like brake fade on your car so after a few hundred feed you probibly wouldnt notice the brake on at all. Other than that on a sled there really is no other way for that to happen unless it was user error. This same thing happened to a friend of mine, on his Arctic Cat, their brake lock has two locking points his was on the first "click" so it was partially on but still smoked the rotor and pads to the point where the sled caught partially on fire. They repaired it under warranty.

Great news!:beer;

Did they say what caused the problem or are they still claiming the brake was locked?

You can tell us what dealer it was now that they are playing nice.:)

They didn't say what the problem was for sure. I have to wonder if Ski Doo knew about an existing problem, or if they believed we were at fault but still gave us the benefit of the doubt. Either way, they are fixing the sled under warranty and I couldn't be happier about it.

Alaska Mining and Diving is the dealer I bought the sled at. Their service guys have been very helpful (even if they were skeptical to begin with), and obviously went to bat for us with Ski Doo. So obviously I'm very pleased at the outcome, and will continue to do business there. I will try to find out more details when I pick the sled up.

Congrats! Just think, another 12 weeks and your wife will be back on the trail! Same scenario as my buddy last year. They payed for it, but he did miss feb, march, and april riding as a result.

I hope not. They told me it would be 5-10 days before the parts arrive. We'll see, I guess. My wife will be destroyed if it is that long before she gets to ride again.
