So I emailed Klim direct and pm'd the Klim employees who post on SW but i haven't heard back, it is the show season and they must be busy. I am going to buy the Klim F4 helmet but not sure which one. There are 3 listed on their sight. I have tried on the ECE and it fit me perfectly. The XL fit my enormous watermelon sized head really well, every other helmet I have tried or owned is an XXL. Does anyone know what the diff is between the 3 helmets listed on their site besides graphics. I really like the venting, fit, quality, light weight, ECE safety rating and price and I can live with the graphics. Thats what sitckers are for! From the blownmotor site I learned;

NEW FOR 2013

E.C.E VERSION IS NEARLY 1 POUND LIGHTER THAN SNELL/DOT VERSION.

REVISED FIN SHAPES REDUCE DRAG, SNAGGING, AND BREAKING OFF WITHOUT REDUCING VENTILATION, AIR-FLOW AND/OR VENTILATION PERFORMANCE.

ALL NEW BREATH DEFLECTOR DESIGN FITS A WIDER RANGE OF FACE SHAPES COMFORTABLY.

I don't like any of the graphics on the ECE model but will go with the white if I end up going with it. The orange geared F4 is my first choice for looks but I am not sure if that F4 has been updated for 2013 or if the fit is different.
Thanks for any help.

The ECE is approved for off road use only, its an European rating system as opposed to the DOT/SNELL we have in the USA. Hence they are able to remove weight from it and it comes in as 1 pound lighter than the DOT/SNELL approved F4 helmets.

I believe the F4 comes in several sizes and depending on size, they use different pads to make the fit. the small helmet, medium and large share the same size helmet with different pads, xl and xxl same helmet different pads, which probably explains why the xl fits your head.

both the ece and regular f4 get the redesigned fins and breath box. To me 1 pound is a lot of weight to carry around on your head all day. Im running the ECE. You can always paint it orange when you get it ;)

Does that help answer your questions?

So here you go, without going into the little details that you have already read on our site.

The Klim F4 that is discounted and on sale, is a non-current product. Meaning that the breathe box, vent shape, colors, and a few other things changed on that style, so the orange one that you like for color will be the SNELL/DOT version that is heavier.

The "Re-Deisgned" Klim F4 that replaced the above model, only comes in one color, matte black. One would assume this is because the weight thing is becoming more and more an issue in todays day and age. Everybody wants light light light.

The "NEW" ECE Version helmet is the same shape and looks identical but does weigh in at over a Lb. lighter than that of its predecessors or the SNELL/DOT offering for this year. It is available in more than one color because it was slated to do better than its heavier brother. And so far we have seen just that, we sell almost 10:1 ECE over the SNELL.

Other than those details, weight and rating is the only difference between the helmets for 2014, they all fit nearly identical, and have the same venting, along with coming with the same accessories. Hope this helps, feel free to call or write with more detailed questions.

The ECE and the Snell have a bit different shape... especially in the top vents.

Snell on top... ECE on the bottom

Both have great ventillation... and protection.. The ECE cert is still a tough standard... Just not as much as a streetbike helmet.

MountainHorse those are old pics. The ECE and DOT are the exact same shell design, just built differently. That graphic on the left does not even exist anymore, that is a discontinued model.

Thanks everybody, that answers my questions. BTW I had a chance to talk to some of the sales guys from Blown Motor at the Puyallup show and everyone I talked to was really friendly and helpful. They had a huge inventory of the new model stuff too.

Dang you shoulda said something, always nice to put faces to names on here! Right now all of our gear is being packed up again to head to the spokane show this weekend, if you are still looking for weights next week we can probably get you squared away, or may be able to yank a couple sizes out of the trailer early.

I believe there is a reason u don't find the weights of these helmets posted anywhere...

We tend to agree, but for more than just the reason your avoiding touching on.

There is no standard to weighing a helmet just as there is no standard to weighing a sled.

Weigh it with the cheek pads or without?
Weigh it with the visor or without?
Weigh it with the liner or without?
Weigh a XS, S, M, L, XL, 2X, or 3X?

A ton of fudge factors that could be skated, and we have seen companies actually weigh helmets without a lot of the above.

hmm

I suspect Klim would want you to also avoid posting any actual weights...

Or,,,,,, you could just say f' it, we're honest people, Here is your updated, size L, cheek pads in and visor on

Brand new helmet "DRY" weights

In grams please.....

Of course you will have to do all the brands you sell, just to be fair,,, right??

We could really care less what people think of the weights, you tell us how you want us to weigh them, what measurement you want, and what size you want and we will do it when we are not getting ready for a snow show. We clearly are not brand loyal to any one brand as we have over 300 models in stock right now haha. Some folks like one model some like the others, just is what we do :)

EDIT: Driving to warehouse right now to have an XL and L in hand in the AM to weight for you guys.

Yessir, a little rainy/slush mix here at the shop all day and stayed around 34 but you can see the line, and the snotel says 16" now at 5400 ft.

I just wondered how much an XL weighed, ready to ride. Not a deal breaker either way. You can really feel the "light" helmets as soon as you pick them up. As phatty said a pound off your head makes a big difference on riding comfort at the end of a long day or end of the 3rd long day of riding. The "light" helmets usually advertise about 1000-1300 grams but i never thought about gaming the weight by removing the visor or cheek pads though and they are always of the small helmet not the XL like I would wear. In that range of weights, protection(should be number one priority), fit, ventilation, durability, looks all are more important to me than 200 grams difference.

When companies give the weight I would bet my last dollar they are all giving you the weight of the small which would still make it apples to apples but I bet the xl are a couple hundred grams more. I bought a new airoh but I would like to try the klim ece on. I have the first run of f4 and I didn't think they fit that well. I got my wife a M and an XL for me and I had to send them back for a L and XXl. They had better ventilation than anything. The one thing I didn't like was the top vents would grab on to branches and whip your head once in a while. I like the looks of the lower profile top vents. I am going lighter and more flexible this year. I am going to look at the new stealth gear in boise. I am going to try an evs jersey instead of my tek vest. I am also going to look at a lighter abs pack than my free ride while I'm out there.

2 years ago I had a f4 geared loved the ventilation but had great difficulty removing helmet with breath box installed it would dig into corners of my eyes does anyone know if new design helps with that

I know I'm not the only 1 that had that problem with it several people did not buy my used helmet for same reason

Ok fellas, well here ya go. Sorry for the video being shot the wrong direction, my staff guy is better at packing boxes than shooting video! (Sorry Rapp (: Haha) The XL sold here at the store this AM before I could video it, and the rest of the XL's are packed in the trailer for the Spokane Snow Show. This is the Size L, and I do everything I can to show you that it is a true L, ECE Version, has everything installed, and the scale is calibrated. Scale is guaranteed calibrated to .3 OZ either direction. For the people wanting grams over Lb's, 3 Lbs. = 1360.78.
