Need help from the SD and ND riders on here

So all of a sudden farmers are welfare recipients? What a load of B.S. Start growing your own food to sustain yourself, grow cotton to make your clothes, grow and cut your own lumber. PCDOC is the reason that we don't let too many "city" people hunt on our land. If you knew anything behind the operation of a agricultural operation I would be suprised. Farmers do receive payments I will concede that point, but what about the corporations who receive tax breaks and grants. That never is discussed when non farmers chastise farmers for receiving payments under the farm program.

paying for the land we hunt

I always ask permission before hunting private land. I have been hunting turkeys on the same property fot the last fifteen years and always ask permission every year. I hunt deer on my cousins property for the last thirty years and ask permission every year also. I lease land in western MN for goose hunting and pay for that priveledge.

Bottom line is that the farmer does own the land and if you want to hunt you should get permission. it makes for better relations all around.

That being said, i think that my tax dollars don't need to be spent to support a farm program that is nothing more than a welfare program for farmers. The straw arguement about there being nothing left but corporate entities controlling the pricing is pure bull. We are paying higher prices now it's just that we pay it up front in the form of taxes rather than at the Grocery store.Farmers would be a lot better off if they were left alone to farm the land instead of farming the program.

To the uppity farmer types out there that want to rant platitudes like"there are alot of auctions out there so if you think that it's easy to grow food then you should try it" probably inherited, gifted or mentored into the farm life or they would never have been able to farm themselves. How many of you could decide tomorrow to start farming and be able to do such? I already know the answer to that question and it's damn near zero.

p.s. Much of the "farm program" is not going into the Farmers pockets but rather it is food stamp dollars that take up a lions share.

To ND flatlander

in reference to your comments about the tax breaks for corporations.......I for one would like to see a flat tax of some sort with NO tax breaks, loopholes of any type. That way the whores that we send to Washinton would have to actually work for us instead of pandering to these sub groups whether they be farmers, export companies, black, white, pink or blue groups etc.......

Hey Bubba, does that answer your questions?

Lol, making me think about taking the cash and getting a reservation permit down in Pokey instead of makin the trip out there. Thought it would be a good trip for the pops since he always talked about how he liked to hunt Pheasants back when he was younger ( IE when we actually had good bird hunting here). If I do the Rez. permit then I can at least get access to some great Goose and Duck hunting also. Just seems like people don't like the out of staters coming in and hunting the area. But then they sure don't mind turning around a few months later, towing their sleds into our back yards and playing in our spots. If We do it, ND looks much more inviting because of the access laws.

PCDOC didn't say it my brother inlaw which farms and ranches in SD did. He also said if the govt. would get out of the farm programs that farming and ranching would be far more profitable. The free market would drive what and what not was produced. A prime example of the farm program B.S. is that several years ago the fed was paying farmers to bust up countless acres of virgin prarie so more wheat could be grown. This was land that never should have been farmed in the first place due to poor soil quality low annual precipitation and highly erodable land. This went well for several years and the fed subsidized this farming because it was not profitable for the farmer to farm. Then all of a sudden there is an abundance of grain on the market due to all these marginal acres that the fed payed to have plowed up and the bottom drops out on the price for grain. Well then the fed goes to the farmer and pays them to put all this marginal acerage back to grass and then some. With one stipulation. You can't run any livestock on this ground. The farmer signs up for this and signs the aggrement. Well then comes the drought and low and behold the farmer goes to the fed and says hey we need to graze this beautiful grass as we have none anywhere else. So the fed allows it. Now it has gotten so bad that the fed is allowing it to be hayed and the hay can now be sold to other producers as well as being used for the landowners own use. Granted there is a slight penalty for this but the gains far out weigh the loss. Talk about a golden goose. And as far as tax breaks you have just as many as the big business people have that you talk about. Heck my sister went to college pretty much for free cause they could show very little income but were living just as well as us "city folks" do. I am not mad and I don't hate the farmer or Rancher I am just pointing out the other side of the story. One more thing you want us city folk to grow our own crops? Why don't you go drill your own oil wells and build your own refinery and then grow some rubber trees and make your own tires to put on your tractor. See how dumb the grow your own crop thing sounded?

I guess you missed the point I was making when I said that you should grow your own food. It's not feasible, that's why farmers are subsidized.

Not Feasible?????

Now at least we all know where your welfare mentality is coming from.

The Fact is that the farm program has removed much of the market forces out of the calculation and has resulted in the percieved need for the government handouts.

Tell the Farmers in your area that are currently seeing high markets prices for their product why it is not feasible for them to farm.

Then tell them how wonderful it is that with these new higher prices that they should go out and bid up land rents because they can make more money next year and the year after that evn if the prices fall out.

Don't forget to tell then last generation of farmers how wonderful it was when grain prices skyrocketed in the seventies also.

I don't know. I guess growing up at some point I listened too alot of bull on how farmers had new trucks, hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment etc. They work only during what seasons harvest and planting etc. I fell into a bit of not feeling real sorry for them. That was when I was young an Naive. Now I look at a farmer like a stock broker/brokerage, investor and skilled laborer all rolled into one. I mean really, they buy and sell in accordance to market. They evaluate and invest in accordence to risk and establish diversity. If they loose it is usually their own money like and investor. And skilled laborer is pretty obvious. Things alot of people don't realise though is some of the crap farmers have to put up with. Example, expanding towns want a piece of agriculture land that a Farmer might be in negotiations with building contractors for purchase. City Govt step in and condems the land and pretty much tells the farmer what they're gonna get from the city for it. And then the city in turn sells it to the highest bidder. (and here most people thing "Wow that farmer must have made a killing selling that land") If city goverment condmed a business, gave the guy a fraction of what it is worth (or of what the guy could make off it over several more years). And then they turn around a sell it to the highest bidder to bulldoze and slap up a house. How far do you think that would go? Nope, farmers have my utmost respect of any business out there. It's a tough volitile business they are in. I also envy them and wish I could do what they do. But I have no relatives to die off leaving me the farm under a buy sell agreement under a life insurance policy. And I don't have a couple mill laying around to go setup shop and buy all the equipment. But if I ever win the powerball I would need to do something to keep me busy. Maybe buy up some land and farm and post "NO F'ing Hunting!".

Poisoning deer would not be hard. How many cattle to you see in a corn or beanfield in the summer? Cattle are in the pasture and deer are in the crops. Also (insert sarcasm her) I'm sure GF&P would have no problem finding dead deer or salt licks in the middle of your land surrounded by 7 foot tall plants? The only way they'll find them is if the farmer tells someone and they talk. That's why you leave not witnesses! :) Also If susidaries (Welfare) were to give someone the right to enter one's property for CRP. Would that mean I could go see the public records list for wellfare recipients and go pitch a tent on their yard and let my biker friends stay there when they come through for Sturgis? I'm a taxpayer and their recieving my tax dollars right?

P.S. OH yeah! Bubba sorry to hijack your thread. I'd consider Winner SD if you want paid hunting and plus it's not that far from Rapid City if you want to see relatives. Not sure where you would want to go for Public hunting. Maybe between Redfield (Watertown) and Mobridge somewhere. (Pack a tent or rent a camper cause there isn't anyplace to stay.)

Good post Fosgate,

I get so sick of all these guys thinking farming is such a gravy job to have. I bet they have never had to sit and watch a thunderstorm brew and wonder if your entire profit is going to be gone in the next hour. There are many sleepless nights if you are a farmer. And then you have one good year and everyone else wants a piece of the pie. Ex: fertilizer up- equipment up- fuel up-chemical up-and those are the things that we have no control over. I will say though that farmers will drive up land prices on their own when they have a good year. It always amazes me that everyone else has it figured out better than the farmer.

Also to all of you "Don't you dare cuss me with your mouthfull of food" cause with out me you would starve!!!!!!!!!!

I would love for one of you guys to give me a breakdown of expenses and income on an acre of corn or wheat. I want it in dollars and cents. Oh yeah don't forget any expenses since you guys know it all. Lets see if you really have a clue what it takes to grow an acre of corn/wheat. COME ON LETS SEE IT!!!!!!!

Wow

First let me say I have alot of respect for farmers. I come from a family that used to farm and raise cattle, also grew up with alot of the same types of people.
Next I didn't know how it can get from "Looking for help planning a bird hunting trip for next fall" into a pissing match about who knows more about farming.
As far as what we have out our disposal for the trip, 24 ft camp trailer ( no need for hotels and we wont be tied down on places to hunt), 2 yr old cheesie that has one hell of a nose for a "duck dog", and 2 or 3 guys that are willing to walk their A.'s of when we hunt. Talked about a few of the things Ive learned from yall especially about the access issues with each place and If we do it it will prob be to ND since this will prob have better access for us. None of us really want to go the payed/catered route. We all enjoy doing it on our own, since the process is what is fun not necessarily shooting a grip load of birds. Im pretty conf. that if we can get access in areas with decent amounts of birds we can put the work into limiting out. Some one asked where I am at, I am from the IF area and hunt up and down the snake river valley.

Watching this one play out for a few days. First post, usually just sit back and watch, but WOW! didn't know farming was such a gravy train. I know I know, before you jump down my throat i realize there are taxpayer dollars involved and i realize that alot of people believe that all private land should be open to hunting, but there are 2 sides to every story. I myself being a landowner and my family don't post any of our land, but am getting close to doing so for the simple fact that no one asks permission anymore. I realize that ND is an open state, but that doesn't mean that you can't take the time to ask someone for access to their land. I am completetly for controlling the wildlife populations, but dread hunting seasons because alot of people don't understand that private land is private land. If someone wants to post it or charge to hunt it that is their legal right to do so. Most landowners don't mind people hunting their land, but simpy wish they knew who was on their land and when they were out there.

South Dakota Game Fish and Parks hunting page with good info.

Public land access map. link is also on page link above. I would recommend the area of Zone 25 (some friends went up there this years oepener and had an awesome time and saw no one else) to tow a camper to and look for a GFP area for a small fenced parking lot.

There is also an interactive map at the first link but it's been down for a couple of weeks now. It gives you a satellite image and you can select what types of public areas you want to find. Then the overhead is highligted to show you the boundaries with private land. I'd also recommend going to Mossyoak.com and sign up for a free membership to have access to their mapper. That gets you a good closeup and I use it myself to evaluate public walk in areas to plan my hunts.

This is also a pretty good forumto find outfitters and meet locals.

I also believe the ND game and fish site has a map of the PLOTS land that is available. If you are looking into hunting in ND your best bet for the best bird populations would be south of I-94. I would more specifically lookin into the Lisbon, Ellendale, Flasher, Wishek, Napoleon areas if you're looking for birds. I think those would be your best areas. If we had more than the 6 pheasants that I saw on our land this year I'd welcome you to my area, but good pheasant hunting is not common up north.

You can find free books at many ND gas stations with all of the current plots land marked.

You will find alot of posted land in the southwest part of ND (course that's where all the birds are), but up near lake Sakakawea is less posted and has a good supply of birds too.

Bubba,

This is right in the heart of my stompin grounds. If you are interested in hunting the area let me know. My rents have house they rent out to hunters . I know they are already booked solid through most of next year and most of the following year also. They might have something in November. Regardless, If you get this way to hunt let me know. I'd hook up with you for some wing shooting and to show you the area.
