Need help brainstoriming this sled build

The 2010-2012 HO motors are basically the same as the 08 accept they are already ported, piped and have the head work done for you. I had a RKtek head and porting on my 2009, the 2010 porting and head work are remarkably close to the package RKtek produced....makes you wonder?

There is a considerable power difference between the motors, again...budget dictates. If you can swing the extra cash for the newer model you will be money ahead to get it as long as you can afford the newer chassis. If not, the 2009 is a great sled and you can always have the head work, pipe, and porting done later, the SLP package is right there with the HO engines.

Here is a good test to take in order to see if you have what it takes to build mod sleds... dig in your wallet, pull out a 100 dollar bill and set it on fire...if you hesitate or flinch whatsoever...then you better stick with a stock sled.

That would make a great sig line.

At the end of the day, you are always better of to go with a newer sled. Chassis can only take so much. If you pump a ton of money into an older sled, that sled is not going to be worth anywhere near what you put into it because the market for an older mod sled just isnt there.

Now, you take the money you would spend on a mod sled and buy an '11 M8 for instance, it is 35lbs lighter, has 25-30 more hp stock. Add a pipe for $600 and now you are 35-40 more hp and 45lbs lighter... You would spend more on mods doing that, than buying new and you will have zero issues if you want to sell it.

My 2cents

I didn't think there was that big of a difference in power. Either way all the 09-2011 are 7000+ and that's outa my price range. Just out of curiosity anyone got the weight and hp specs of a 07-08 m8 and then the weight and hp specs on a 2011 ? Thanks again guys and sorry for all the questions I hope I'm not pissing any of you off.

IMO if I were going to build a sled ground up custom and all I would buy a sno pro 500 chassis and get a tunnel extension, put a 153 power claw under there and an 800 HO under the hood with a narrower front end, nice handle bar set up, skinz seat, etc......I know there are people on this forum that have done this, I have seen pictuers. Maybe find a salvaged 500 and part it out or something. just an idea.

that was actually going to be my next build but decided to not do another mod sled. You can find 08-10 former race sled sno pros for around 4-5k. and to keep cost down a 700 big bored to 800 is an easier transplant. basically just delete the oil injection and bolt right in.

to answer your question the 11m8 is supposed to be 163 hp and weigh about 440 dry. 07-08 would be about 15 less hp and weigh about 30lbs more.

Thanks so a rktech head on a 07-08 m8 would get you to about the same hp or so as a 2011 and then a pipe/can and intake would just be extra icing on the cake

No just a head will not get you to the same power as an HO. You will need a head and pipe package for sure and porting should get you at or above stock HO power levels, but then you can do all of those things to an HO for the same money in upgrades and have a stupid amount of power for a naturally aspirated 800.

I understand what your saying. Anyone know how much rktek charges for porting ?
