Need good Antivirus Software

Hey, my computer wound up with the nasty AntivirusPRO 2009. I took it in for a good cleaning and was billed $98 bucks to have it cleaned up.

So what is the best antivirus program to be running. And I don't want Norton. It slows the machine down to the point it's useless. (Unless it is the BEST) :)

Anyway let me know what works. Short of not having an internet connection.

The dealer right now is saying to run Firefox and go. Nothing else needed.

Your thoughts.

Thanks

Thunder

AVG works, you can download it for free or they also have a better version that cost a little.

Had a thread about this topic a few months ago. Troubles with a few computers. Someone suggested Avast, I tried it. Free download good for like 60 days. Download it and when prompted, don't save it. That way it can be uninstalled when the time is up and another download will renew the time. When I installed it, make sure you do not prompt to do a scan every time the computer is restarted (takes a while to boot up if you do). Other than that, the program caught more stuff on the 2 computers we had issues with, that Trend Micro would not.

Yeap, avast is good from what I hear.

Firefox is good too; closes a lot of the security holes IE has when you're surfing the internet tubez.

I just bought Kaspersky,
Rated the best Anti-virus out there by almost everyone. Most expensive as well, but worth it.
Replaced it from AVG, it found over a half dozen things in my computer that AVG had missed. Have not noticed any issues with slow down as that was one of the selling points, supposedly the programs are that much better so it wont slow down computer when its running. Also recieves updates hourly for new virusus to scan for, but you can adjust the update schedule.

I'll tell you how good it is in a little bit. Doing a 30 day download and will scan this laptop with it.

No need to go to all that hassle Gimp, Avast home version is free, you just need to register it after 30 or 60 days on their website, then they email you a key (free) enter the key when prompted and thats it. I have been using it for several years at home on 3 computers and never have had to pay.

P.S. It works well too - never had a single issue with the nasty stuff out there while using it.

Let me know how it goes, would like to get another opinion. Hate to think I spent a few bucks more than I need to but its done now anyway. Still like another outside look at it.

huh, parallels comes with kaspersky; never bothered to install it though. Windows usually breaks itself before I even get the chance to put a virus in there.

Anyone ever tried uninstalling any of the anti-virus programs?

I tried switching to Kaspersky this summer, but apparently I can't get all of AVG Free off my system (XP) and Kaspersky locks up and keeps prompting to uninstall the current anti-virus. I gave up and reinstalled AVG Free.

I had the same trying to install Kaspersky from AVG, AVG had left behind some files. I found out it is a problem with AVG . After searching Kaspersky Tech Support I found the solution of a removal tool from AVG. Then everything worked just fine.

Home & Home Office Technical Support
Fail to install Kaspersky Anti-Virus product version 2009 due to “remains” of Anti-Virus AVG8 in the system

Concerning:
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009

Sometimes installation of Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 2009 can be hindered by the “remains” of AVG8 in the system, although AVG8 was successfully removed and the system was restarted.
Prior to copying the installation files onto the hard drive, the Configuration Wizard checks the computer for third-party software incompatible with Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 2009. The records of AVG8 in the system registry are identified by the Wizard as a fully installed and functioning anti-virus AVG8 although the product has already been uninstalled. As a result the Configuration Wizard asks to manually uninstall the incompatible software and interrupts the installation.

To resolve the situation you should do the following:

Interrupt the current installation of Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 2009
download the AVG removal utility http://www.grisoft.com/us.download-tools
run the file AVGREMOVER.EXE
wait until the utility finishes its work
restart your PC
rerun installation of Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 2009

It will not install on this system. Conflict from other anti-virus installed on here ? I tried 3 times, no go.

Wanted to try it because I am switching when my Trend subscription runs out in February, we are looking at changing to another anti-virus then.

Acccording to Kaspersky with the install guide I recieved, it will not install with any other Anti-virus installed. They all must be removed. As above I had trouble because of residual AVG files that had to be removed with a removal tool.

You all were posting info I needed while I was installing.
Let me know how it works out for you after it's use for a while.
Like I say... Looking to change ours
