Need Advice, never been to colorado

I'm not the originator of this thread, but have the same questions. I've been to Buff Pass and Ears before, but this year we will have a total novice with so looking for a place a little more accommodating for lodging and sled rental and that is why I thought Grand Lake.
Is it usually rideable right out of town? Or should I expect to trailer?
Do I need to stay at a place right on the trail or is the whole town sled friendly? I plan to rent a cabin from VRBO and don't know if is right on the trail.
I see a few rental places in town, any to go to or stay away from?
What is the terrain like? I'm familiar with Ears like I said, as well as Snowys. Besides the newbie, the rest of our group has lots of experience and don't want to be bored. Decent sloped tree riding?

You should take a look at the thread titled, "Best place to ride late December?" There's a local guy from Grand Lake who has posted a lot of good information. I've only ridden Grand Lake one time a few years ago. Trust me you won't be bored. That riding area is huge and there's a lot of places to play. Gravel Mountain area has a ton of stuff to play on, just gotta be a little careful about not setting off a slide. There's plenty of other place to hill climb and play in the trees and below tree line that are a lot safer. I took a newbie with me and he did fine.

Conditions Grand Mesa

We received another 17 inches of snow sat-mon....It is still snowing and could snow quite a bit more all week. The frozen lakes and trails are in great shape and some of the off trail riding is becoming available. Like everywhere in the state we really could use a few more feet before I could say it is all good to go, but the snow is about chest deep on north facing slopes right now. Summit 800s XM or XP Chassis, also have 2014 Summit 600 etec, nonethanol 91 gas...Thunder Mountain Lodge, Grand Mesa Thanks

If you want to find great snow without having to worry about the details, look up 3C Guiding out of Laramie to ride Snowies or Tog. Great backcountry experience with knowledgable peeps.

You do not need to stay at a place right on the trail, the whole town is sled friendly. Just follow the rules of the road, stop signs, speed limits, ect.
All the rental places in town do a fairly good job as far as I know (I own my sleds), but 'On the Trail Rentals' is, well, right on the trail. Makes it easy.
Nearly any kind of terrain in GL that you could hope for, you just have to be a little adventurous and not be afraid to explore. You shouldn't be bored if you're bold enough. The trails are normally well groomed. Plenty of trees in GL.

P.S. I rode all day Sunday (12/13) in waist-deep to chest-deep snow. I did bump into a few logs, stumps and rocks with no damage. All that being said, it's snowing again now until Wednesday night. Everything but the really obvious obsticles should be covered by the end of this storm.

It's snowing pretty good right now in town in Durango. Gotta be dumping snow up in the mountains. Will be interesting to see how much snow this storm drops. This one might be better than the weekend storm.

I got this one right! Another 23" at Wolf Creek, just from the storm on Monday! I'm skipping work tomorrow :face-icon-small-hap

Thanks for the info!

any updates in the steamboat area. i also never have been to the area riding and want to this year. coming from eastern south dakota seems like steamboat is the most convenient area to get to. read alot of people say hahns peak to lodge at. Any other places? does not have to be a "ride from" lodge. hoping to make it in the end of january as of right now. also, is there a webpage that shows the rabbit ears/buffalo pass trail system to get an idea of the area?
