Need 1st Timer Sled Advice, Buena Vista, CO

That 2012 Rmk 800 would be a good deal. Don't read too into the hype. The more you read the more issues you will find. I had a 2012 rmk pro with 3200miles on stock pistons and half those miles were mountain miles. About 5 others I knew were in the same boat. The only one who blew one up had an 11. When people have a problem they post it and then other people keep re posting it even if they have never had a problem them selves..... The RMK is a great sled to learn on and far easier then my buddies 11 m8 i rode.

Thank yall very much for all the help. Please keep the comments/opinions coming. Im VERY aware of the people only spreading problems.....if whatever it is is running right and no issues there is no reason to be on the forums talking about them.

There is a guy up north of me that has 3 2012 RMK Pro 800's with 163" tracks with mid 200 miles on all of them. He is at $6k a piece. Not sure I need/want that long of track?

Might have been easier to start a post on what sled NOT to get....lol! If I were to get an older/cheaper sled to start on that will still handle the deep stuff and my high elevation is there any certain sled I should look at or stay away from?

Look for a 900 King cat, some were carbed nd some efi. I think once you get to riding here in the mountains you will want the longer track. 153 on a cat or 155 on the rmk does well enough.

I seen those three rmks on Craig's list this am, decent price. Theres a set up King Cat on there as well with 1010 big bore for like 2300.00, take you places you don't want to go, lol.

I honestly like to buy all stock stuff. Im just weird like that. Stuff that is original owner, with the owners manual gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling....lol!

I know you have a sled on the mind, but have you thought of looking into a Snowbike.

Easier to ride in technical terrain, not much on a trail but are great in deep deep powder. And you get the benefit of riding it in the summer as well.

Can pick um up from 6k to 16k.

I actually did think about it. Damn they look sketchy to me...lol! Ive already got a KTM 525 exc so would make a good candidate I think. Thats about as far as Ive got with it.

I've heard tell there great for old geezers as they handle really well and do t wear you out like a sled.

That KTm would be a sweet Snowbike, there's a lot of set ups for sale here in the classified area. Check out some YouTube vids of um, they go really well and like I said handle easy.

Yes, the sno pro version of the M's (like the one in the Craigslist ad) has an adjustable steering post and the fox floats which are both nice. And please go with your instincts and do not buy a king cat or a highly modified ride. The more current the better, sleds have changed a ton over the last ten years!

Im leaning more towards the M8 vs the RMK. Having to buy something and immediately start looking at piston kits is not appeasing to the first time sled owner. No doubt I can do the work just not something that appeals to me.

Also found some HCR M8's that are within my price range but from what Ive read they seem to not be the "friendliest"......for lack of better words.

i wouldn't buy another cat after the 09 i had 2 broken steering posts , and the steering effort was terrible . plus it ate belts like they were going out of style good luck with your search, you may want to try a few sleds to see what fits you best.

The M sled was a great sled in its day but if you ride anything newer you will see how outdated it is compared to any of the newer sleds, but would be the best sled worth buying for 5k or less. A Proclimb, Pro, or XM are all a world ahead of the 07-11 M's. I rode a highly modded 07 M8 for 4 seasons and loved that sled THEN. Now I wouldn't want to ride one unless I had no other choice. But the thing for you is if you don't ride a newer sled you have no idea what you are missing. If you can get up into the 6k range then you have a whole new range of sleds to look at. Just remember the cheapest sleds you find in a price range are almost always sleds that were rode hard and put away wet, stored outside and had little to no maintenance.

We have had four 800 PRO RMK"s. Only one was a 163". I prefer the 155" and the belt drive as opposed to the chain drive. No nightmare stories to report on any of them. Our 2013 is closing in on 3000 miles and plan to do the top end on it. If you are going Polaris I would go with the 2014+ 800 PRO RMK. Keep in mind that it is lousy on the trails compared to their trail sleds. I am on your side about staying stock.

Good to find this site! We moved up to Buena Vista, CO last year and skiied all winter. We dirtbike and cruise the Turbo RZR in the summer.....thinking of getting a sled now. Ive only ridden once over in Crested Butte back in 2010 on some junky rental. Need some advice on a beginner sled but dont want a dog. Im 37 and still like some performance. I assume my riding will be 30-50% groomers to get to any of the back country powder over in Taylor Park or up north by Leadville. At this point I dont wana spend a ton on something Im not sure of yet.....I still like to ski but this will get me to some more remote places as well. Im partial to Polaris as well. Budget wise Im not sure of. Dont have a hardline on that but lets say shy of $5k for sure. Allthough Ive seen some super nice 13+ RMK's for around 6ish that look tempting but not sure thats the best sled for what Im after but again not sure. Im mechanically inclined and weigh around 200# just FYI. Thanks in advance!

Everyone thinks I'm just being mean when I say this but Polaris products are garbage. Please spend some time looking into the extraordinary number of engine failures they've had.

If it's a SXS you're looking at in the future, PM me... I've built two RZRs that got stripped to the frame and built back up so they could actually survive a spirited drive.

Edit: If you do EVER buy a Polaris SXS for any reason... PLEASE call Andrew Prins at Racer Tech because I'm so sick of seeing a 20k machine fail needlessly on people. I do not work for Racer Tech and in fact live thousands of miles away.

Ive kinda moved on from the Polaris. I still have a PoPo SXS in my garage.....well kinda. Its at the dealer now getting recalls fixed.

Anyway. Say I wanted to spend $6k as someone suggested. What would that open me up to? A newer cat? Just left my local dealer and they had a 2015 sno pro 153" new on the floor for $9900. That seemed high for a two year leftover now.....but we are in a small town. I dont mind spending a little more if it will get me light years ahead of the game.

Good prices but dang I hate to spend that kinda money on something Im not even sure Im gona like. The last thing I rode was probably an old 550 rental ski. It was in 2010.

rent a pro and a cat and see for yourself. most dealers have a demo sled and will take you out for the day...
