N. Fairfield (Wells Summit) Report

With Soldier Mountain opening up for skiing, we decided to give Wells Summit a try. Parking at the upper lot above the old Ski-doo dealership, snow was thin, light and drifty. Dirt was showing where we parked. If it warmed up, it would be a mess. The trail up was covered, just barely, but enough to keep sleds cool and free from rocks. Off trail at the bottom of the trail is not advised. Once you get over Wells Summit, the snow improves to allow some off trail. The further north you go, the better it gets, to a point. You could see where some have taken off trail and had plenty to climb, and others where they tried and clipped a tree or large rock. For the most part you can play off trail past the warming hut if you take it easy and read the snow.

Snow was light, bottomless, and about 2'-4' deep depending on slope, not a problem for even the 144" we brought. The only people who got stuck was those that fell off. Trail was awful. Un-groomed and very rutty the whole way up. Past the warming hut it looked as if it hasn't been groomed at all this season, trails were hard to find.

All and all worth the trip, I would go again if I wasn't working. Need another foot or two to completely bury all the rocks and downed trees.

If you know who stole most of the firewood from the warming hut and the axe..... again....., kick them in the nuts for all of us. If you want a fire, bring matches and a axe/hatchet.
