My sled is getting hot on icy trails

MTN VIPER I am 6’ 4” and I cant sit comfortably on this sled. I literally stand all day if the sled is running. Only sled I have ever owned that I can’t sit on.
Old and slow so my sled runs 125 in soft snow no matter how hard I run it. I am a big load on a sled and in deep pow it’s getting a workout lol. If my t stat or impeller wasn’t right would I be running cool in those conditions but hot on the trail?

Possibly, but I would think that you would be running hot at all times if it was the T-stat or water pump.

Slow boondocking through the trees with some loose/fresh snow here in western WA (Cascade Concrete) mine will usually runs in the 120-130ish. If it's more of a hard packed then I'll have to put the scratchers down otherwise the temp light will start flashing. If I'm riding 25 to 50 MPH and just playing around with some fresh snow it will run between 110 to 125F. Snow conditions seem to make a difference how cool the sled runs. If it's cold out with more powder snow blowing around the sled tends to cooler then it will in warmer ambient temps with wet snow.

I think the key is to get the track to carry the snow around to the heat exchanger where the heat transfer process can occur. I suspect that different types of snow are more effective at this then others, which makes a certain amount of sense.

I hear ya on the seat, before I bought my sled I sat on the non-ES and ES Cats at the snow show. I'm 5' 11" and old;-) so I'm not afraid to admit that I need to sit down from time to time! Anyway the ES seat was way more comfortable and easier on my knees, so I ended up ordering the ES for the seat.

^^the ES seat is much better for some sit down time. It’s my 1st after 4 Cats and likely not the last.

Your right it should run hotter all the time. The 125 does seem high compared to mine 110, now if your impeller is just starting to slip it could be the cause. I would run it and see if the problem gets worst. I know this doesn't help with your trip coming up. Is this a new issue or has this sled been like this from day one?

MTN-VIPER thats how my sled runs too a T and I am running the same area as you, Western WA.

I’d like to try that seat, looks perfect for my size. Be nice to sit down on the trail a bit lol

Yeah, I kinda wonder if it's the snow conditions we ride in. The sled is so much fun to ride, for me it's just being mindful of the snow conditions and being proactive with the scratchers when needed.

On the topic of that seat, might be able to kill two birds with one stone. Since your a taller guy, you may be able to sit down occasionally and move your weight back if the motor gets warm. Looks kinda cool to also (y)

Road 5 days in McCall a couple weeks ago. Several days the trails were really hard but the snow is so light and dry it always seemed to come up and circulate thru the tunnel. Very few temp issues. Sled ran 127-135 most of the time with scratchers down. Also seemed to help to spin the track hard like someone suggested. Selling the Alpha now tho so it won’t be an issue here in WA either lol.
