Muddy Creek Parking (Rabbit Ears Pass)

We used to be one of the first people who used to camp up there. NOw everyone does. We have a big rig, but, are respectful of space. Don't bash everyone who camps up there.

A couple of years ago, we almost got in a fight over the same issue with people and their slides blocking the roadway, saving spaces. We haven't camped there since.

It isn't the "crowds" that get me up there - it is the parking. I've never had a problem with other riders once leaving the lot - never seem to see much of anybody after a mile or two away from the lot / LOL

I'll give you that. Been riding up there for a few yrs now and have seen some stupid azz peeps & parking. No common sense or regard to organization and others.

So did they issue tickets? Any towing???

Another reason I don't ride the Ears! Have fun fighting over parking lol

We will continue to worry about where we are going to flip around the four place.:D

Example of parking: Dumont, no pics of the MC lot!

Got to love the ignorance in people today. Reminded me of an old email I read.

My parents told me about Common Sense early in my life and told me I would do well to call on her when making decisions. It seems she was always around in my early years but less and less as time passed by. Today I read her obituary. Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance, for Common Sense had served us all so well for so many generations.

Obituary
Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old she was since her birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. She will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault. - Or, maybe I am being an inconsiderate azzclown.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

Common Sense was preceded in death by her parents, Truth and Trust; her husband, Discretion; her daughter, Responsibility; and her son, Reason. She is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know my Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm a Victim.

Not many attended her funeral because so few realized she was gone.

Latest from Sheriff or USFS? We are heading up Thurs. morning and wondering if there is anything we can do if, sorry, I mean when we encounter some of the finer members of our "snowmobiling community"? Specific phone numbers, trucks to look for, or scared old men in campers? I would guess no, but is the Sheriffs dept. going to "watch" this area at all? I would hate to see it come to it, but issuing citations might be the only way to get their attention. Just what we need; more issues bringing snowmobiling in national forests to the table.

Ya can't fix stupid

PJ
This kind of thing seems to be happening a lot. People just think about themselves. They block all access can't even turn around with out unloading sleds and unhooking trailer. Now we are at the parking lot at 8 AM. I think it is sad that we all have a common source of fun and yet so few are willing to be accommodating to fellow sledders. Guess we need some signs printed up!
:STUPID

I must have missed the part where the lot was full of colorado plates....

Dumont lot (see pic) I wasn't trying to bash my friends from the Big D, I was just saying that if they are from the Front Range they should know better!

No word from the USFS as of yet. It was mentioned that next year may be a pay to park year and camping not allowed! Kinda ruins it for peeps like Bushy that camp but doesn't hurt anyone with his little set-up! If they have pay to park, you bet your azz that it's gonna be enforced. They USFS is tired of hearing complaints. I actually hope they do make a pay to park area. Then its, FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE (like it should be now) not, "I was here first but my buddy had to work so he'll be up later, guess I'll put up parking cones to save him a spot". I think that if we have to pay to park, it should be 6 bucks per vehicle, if the vehicle is a "Coach" style RV with a 4 place then the price should be tripled, they can obviously afford it, but these will be the first people to whine and cry about 18 bucks, maybe that's why they can afford a $100,000 vehicle!

I'm gonna think real hard on this. Once I get a good idea of what the pros and cons are I'll start a poll.

heres an idea

since PJ here has the biggest issue, let's get him a orange vest with MC hall monitor on it so that he can start enforcing the "rules that don't exist." He can sport a nifty tape measurer to make sure everyone is within limit and equally porportionate across the entire lot! You up for it their PJ?:face-icon-small-win

look I hate parking there to, main reason I only ride there once or twice a year (and it's usually after the most put their sleds away for the season). It's like hearding cats. YOU WILL NEVER GET THEM ALL LINED UP PERFECTLY! even if it were a pay lot, you would have the same results just that the yahoo's would feel more justified to park wherever as they just paid to do it.

oh yea and to the a-hole who took a good size chunk out of my trailer last 2 weekends ago, thanks! helped with the gas mileage...

bash on

Tread Lightly

PJ, this is beginning to sound more like a jealousy thing with people with RV's. You live up there, good for you. Those of us who don't want to drive 120 miles one way for one day shouldn't be crammed into the same category as those who don't know how to park. Half the problems there have been caused by the lot not being plowed correctly. That lot is too small. Also remember the Routt Powder riders paid for and built that lot not the forest service, so why should the FS collect a fee? Be careful who you are crying to, it can only hurt, not help.

c'mon folks, be part of the solution, not the problem.

BUY A SLED DECK, lose the stupid trailer.

(oh yeah, I just happen to have a few for sale!!!)

And if you need to drive a camper, maybe you should find a closer place to ride!!!!:p

Come on Kaleb, that is pretty self righteous. . . Maybe we will park in your driveway:D

Sorry but I have to side with PJ on this one. The main reason the lots were not plowed well is because this year there have been too many days when the drivers could not get into the lots. Because of campers and big rigs left overnight. The ROUTT Powder riders did not plan on the lots becoming a free camping area for out of towners. Even a well parked RV and a big trailer can take the same space as two truck/trailer combos. The main issue is that the F.S. will not allow us to enlarge the parking. I truely believe they want conflict. Just look at the numbers and the size of the non-motorized user lots. MUCH bigger lots and more of them.
Those of us who live here Thank-you for being considerate when you park whatever you drive.

Would two rigs and 6 to 12 people please volunteer to stay home so these 2 folks have a place to park their 80 feet worth of rig! Oh, I forgot about the 80 foot side yard they need for all their crap. Two more rigs worth of volunteers please:D MC lot is not a campground and it's a real privelege to be able to camp overnight there. Be sensible about how much space you are hogging per person or that privelege will probably go away. Maybe they should charge fees based on how much space your using and that number would triple when you get into the realm of the ridiculous (like two people taking up 2000 square feet) Family discounts apply:D

Fixed it for ya!:D

If these rules don't exist, please feel free to call the USFS headquarters in Steamboat (970-879-1870) and speak with a representative. They will read you the same statute that they read to me. Without all of the legal mumbo-jumbo, it basically states that it is illegal to block, interrupt, barricade or inhibit any road, trail, drive or parking lot on USFS land. It is unlawful to interrupt the general use for the general public. One party CANNOT "save" a space for another party. Trust me on this one, I checked with the USFS.

Secondly I don't expect people to park "perfectly", I do expect people to park CORRECTLY, CONSIDERATELY and to use their head for something other than wearing a helmet. It's a load of crap that people take up 2 spaces just because they want a 5-10 window of space for their slide-out. Or a place to park sleds. Why don't they park their sled in that big trailer overnight instead of leaving them out, taking up space the next morning for the day trippers?
I know that it's not possible, but I'd love for the USFS to call me up and ask me to monitor the lots and issue citations. I'd hand out tickets left and right, after about a month, I'd bet that folks start parking logically.

Jealousy! That's funny! I can afford one, if I wanted one. For me, they are impractical. Yes, I live up here, but I ride with a lot of guys that don't and when they come up for more than one day, they camp/park responsibly. Bushmaster takes up almost no room with his set-up and the same goes with yammerhammer. The other guys have stayed at my house.

Yes, the lot is plowed incorrectly. That is CDOT's problem. They cannot do anything right up there. Ask Zoomie or Steamboat-RN. Yes, the lot is too small. So why would someone try to park a 60' RV with a 25-30' trailer. Trucks could barely squeeze between vehicles this weekend. Drivers actually had to have a spotter to make sure that their trailer didn't clip another rig. If the Routt Powder riders paid for that lot, then maybe they should collect a fee for use. I would GLADLY pay for day use. But since the lot is on USFS land, they by law, can enforce the usage and collect a fee.

Lastly, I am not crying as you so eloquently stated. I am merely bringing attention to a problem that has been ignored too long. I don't think that it's fair to day-trippers (local or from the Front Range) that when they arrive at the lot or lots, they find that there are no spaces to park because other peeps have started parking end to end or they have taken up more space than they actually need because they believe that since they are bigger, they are allowed more space. You are one of the last people that I thought would actually bash me. I thought you were above that. After all, I have NEVER bashed you.

These lots were such a cluster f*ck this weekend, people couldn't even drive around the loop in the MC lot. They had to stop and ask folks to move sleds. I would've hated to have been there during the day when almost everyone was out riding.

This thread was started to bring attention to a problem. Not start a bash-fest. So grow up and try to come up with answers to assist in ending these problems, not catchy little insults.

so does that mean no orange vest and no tape measurer? We could change the sash to spelling bee champion if you prefer.

If the people that ride the ears joined the routt powder riders we would have more power to try and get more parking and/or improve what little we have. The city of Steamboat wants to make the lakes up there closed to snowmobiles because of water issues. The club is always fighting these battles to keep it open to riding.
