Mtn Cat gear down?

I am far from a clutch expert. I buy kits and put them as the manufacturer recommends. If i have issues, i contact the manufacturer and have them give me things to change.

That being said, my 2014 seized a roller at 900mi. I put the 2016 team primary on at that time with MDS. At 1,200mi i put a 3in claw (kept 8tooth drivers)and changed the gearing to hyvo 20/49(only option on the shelf at the time). Been a belt eater ever since. Belt eater, as in pulling strings at 250-300mi. Belt temps are 170-200° cruising around. Climbing gets it to 220° quick, deep snow flat ground, I'll see 230° if im breaking trail. My 18 and 19 are so much better on The bottom end, i know a lot of that has to do with the Ctech vs Zuk but the gearing and clutch just feel much better on the bottom. My 14 feels good mid to top end. Definitely pulls harder on the trail at 60+mph.

I would say it's geared too high. Stock ctec is 19/50 with similar driver size and that is still too high for 1:1 climbing.
 
when they went to the 2.6 track in 13 it ate belts then for 14 they geared it down and it stopped. they added more cooling fins also but mainly the gear down to reduce stress on the belt.
 
I think in 17 they started getting gears dialed. 19/50 with 8s. 21/49 for 7s. still being used today i believe. Alpha drivers are a hair larger diameter so i could see dropping 1 tooth upper possibly on that one, or add two lower, king cat gears?
 
I sold my Seahawk to my brother. Since i want him to continue liking me, i think im going to gear that sled back down to save him money on belts, not to mention the ****tttty experience of rolling down the hill from exploding belts....

A gear down would be mistake! Just go ride a 16-17 with 2.86 gears. Retarded.
The old clutches 12-15 where best with 2.42, the new ones like 2.5 range.
2.63 is to low. You get snap but no torque on a pull. The clutch back shifts to hard with the large radius helix. But I haven't been able to find the right combo to get back to 2.42. Like my 14 that would walk on 18s.
 
Ran across this to take more into consideration final drive ratio not just gearing.. Just put in a set of 20/49 and waiting on snow....

and 8 th drivers. only 16 and back limited had 7th with the 3" and the very first thing is to dump the 7th and put in 8t!!

Gearing down was a band aid for poor clutching. On my 13 I ran 2.42:1, had excellent belt life and cool clutches after some tuning. Also had higher track speeds with the 2.42, as I had tried 2.63 as well. This is in BC snow. FWIW, I also geared up my 1100T to 2.24 from 2.33 with good results...
There is a fine line between good trackspeed and cool clutches, and this is dependant on rider weight and riding conditions / style.
