MTB Out There...Heli Drop

Jealous.

I'm dreaming of a new MTB right now but really don't need a "downhill" type. It's mostly technical single track on the prairie/woods/hills.... Any suggestions for a MTB newbie? Budget is reasonable.

go to at least 2-3 bike shops in your area and try a few out. Your looking for a 5&5 inch front and rear suspension bike xc/all-mountain. Rocky Mountain, Marin , Giant, Specialized, Brodie....find the best one that fits you...then the cost depends on what gruppo you have on it...that is the cranks, chain, gears etc. aim for shimano xt or one down is lx and one up is xtr...which you don't really need unless your racing...any questions while your buying just aim and fire them at me...dave@davenorona.com cheers dave

unless you have a lot of shuttle runs or a ski hill near by, you don't need the downhill bike.

xc 2-3 inches of travel
trail 4-5 inches of travel
all mountain 5-7 inchss of travel. mostly 6, which is what i got.
downhill over 8 inches of travel.
than there is freeride which is all over the board, these bikes can take big hits, similar to downhill but slightly different.

I don't have any expierence on 29ers. But the talk is they roll over rocks easier due to the bigger circumfrence but they take a little longer to get to speed. I doubt the avg person can tell, but the bike world is made up of engineers.

good to see you two wheelers on here and friendly!! Some of the bikers down here in the states don't realize they are on the "road/trail closed" list... They are shutting down trails to bikes in Montana because we didn't get on the same page years ago to keep them open for ALL of us!

nice ride:thumb:

any comments on the 29ers - they seem to be the new rage?

Those bikes are very well engineered and work very well. Unless you are a taller rider and are on fast rolling trails a 29r is not nesessary. When 29r first came out they sucked as they were just built bigger and they steered like crap, now they are a lot better but you are going to find it harder to find tires and suspension if you ever want to ungrade...stick with a 26 regular and you will have more options. cheers dave
