Mt. Baker Crater party

Who's going to make a run to the crater this spring?

Is it mainly up from Big House?

Anyone have a saved gps track that they can upload to this forum?

Do you have to enter wilderness area on the east side of the mountain?

If you haven't been before, only do it if you can follow other tracks. Later in the spring as temperatures warm up is the worst time to go. As temps increase, ice starts to move and crevasses start to open. Add a bit of drifted new snow over a newly opened crevasse and you have a problem.

I don't mean to preach, but it sounds like you haven't been up before. Be safe. It's a cool experience.

yeah.....almost HAVE to do it once, it's very cool. In the short amount of time I've been riding, I can remember more than a couple people falling in crevasses, so follow and do it quick before the danger goes way up.

Yep, I've been there and done that and followed the tracks up and then spent the rest of the day picking my friend out of a 100 foot straight drop due to a crevasse, that was right along side the trail going up. The way is obvious on a clear day as there are always tracks going up to the crater BUT the danger are less obvious. I won't go anymore it is just not worth the risk.

The wilderness is very very close to the crater, I'm not positive on this, but I believe the crater portion is actually in the wilderness.

If you go, bring your camera, take your pics and I wish you well. As the weather warms up the mountain becomes more and mroe dangerous. The snow gods like sleds and peeps...

I almost fell in one up there.......havn't been up that far since.....We had no idea that we were on it until my legs broke through trying to move the back of my sled a bit. Very scary!!!

I hiked up there in aug and I would never go near the crater after seeing the openings you can fall into..

Watch out!!!!!!!!!

Last June we went twice in the day up to the crater. In the early morning, everything was pretty firm and only a few crevasses open slightly. The second trip up late in the afternoon really spooked me when a few of those crevasses opened up pretty wide ......................after crossing two of them haulin' A$$ up the mtn, I was done for the day going up there. Incredible view but be careful.

If youare going up to the crater-I advise first ting in the morning and not afternoon--as PP has stated with his experiance--bring rope and be preped in case of the worst.

I have helped pull out a left behind sledder that hit a crevass coming down and their buddies did not notice--luckily we had a bunch of rope--sled--still there:(.

about 2/3 of the crater is wilderness--NE side.

H20SKE...

Fly a plane around Mt. Baker in August and then decide if you'll go up to the top again.....

Agree 100%. I have gone there but now I've seen it never again. Once you see what you're crossing, even some low stuff you will soil yourself. Just remember you are crossing several snow bridges hundreds of feet deep. So, roll the dice it's your life. JMO

Here are some pics from last June up at the crater. Blue skies and riding in shorts.:D

From someone that has fallen in a crevasse in Valdez AK.. Took me 4 hours to climb out.
Glaciers are no place to F%@k around. If you don’t have a big group and a plan in place for handling a accident don’t go.

The safety Equipment I would bring would be the following.

1 Peeps
2 100ft of Rope
3 Ice Screws (3)
4 Harness with D ring
5 Sat Phone
6 Traveling with an Experienced Group

My ½ Cents

Here is a great photo of it in the summer time.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: WTF? Never seen a summer picture before... W O W.

Anyone care to explain the pic or modify it with text? Like I assume the pic is taken from railroad grade? That little lake is the waterfall? Or is it from the east of railroad grade?

WOW Thanks for the pic.
