Moving to Montrose late Janurary....lets ride

Nope, Mesa doesn't reach 13,000. But it certainly has similar looking terrain and most definitely isn't flat. By the looks of the snow it is fairly easy riding there.

I just love you Mesa worshipers, so dedicated to the cause. I have spent lots of time up there. I just do not find it as satisfying as areas closer to me. If I lived in Junktown, I'd probably ride the Mesa too. Living at the bottom of Red Mtn Pass, the allure of the really big country is too much.

Nobody comes back to ride with us a second time anyway.

Hard to resist and invitation like that!

Ouray, got any more pics of the Juans? I do love it down there.

Back on topic, Dave, the pics ouray has posted are right out your back door to the south. Montrose is a perfect location for a sledder with a ton of great riding in every direction. CB/Black Mesa/Unc/Grand Mesa/Silverton etc. Pick a direction and ride!

Have to agree with Corp. on this. Living in Montrose is awesome. Nice thing is it is centrally located, you can go in any direction. Access point to anything and everything, mild to wild. Pm me for number and I can get you hooked up with lots of guys in our area. Hope to see you out there soon.

Montrose would be an awesome location, in the middle of it all for that region.

Ouraysledder we didn't make it down last week, had to make some last minute changes, but by the looks of it the snow was great over the holiday! You should be careful letting out all your secret locations though, word spreads and before you know it its turned into Disneyland. I figured out why people dont talk about Cooke City anymore, unless you arrive on a weekday and it snowed 2ft the night before its pretty slime pickings for freshies and that's coming from a city boy:face-icon-small-con. Let the popular areas stay that way and the explorable areas for those willing to do so:face-icon-small-coo

I'm still hoping to come down in the spring for some amazing riding, I will be coming down over the 4th of July again we got camping spots at the amphitheater! I just hope they dont job us on the firework show like last time. I love that place!

We rode the Mesa for five days over New Years and never saw another rider. A lot of the Mesa gets hammered but it is one BIG place and if you know where to go you can have a lot of fun up there. And there is plenty of steep and deep, just gotta know where to look. I've been exploring up there for 10 years and I continue to find new spots to explore.

That said, looks like the San Juans are terrific too!

Near as I can tell, the best riding is wherever my truck is parked 'cuz that's where I am that day and it sure beats sitting in this office!

Its all fellas.........keep posting, cant wait to move

I have a KTM dirt bike to:face-icon-small-coo

Well... pretty much every Sunday from Jan-May you can find someone to ride with of you show up at the Ridgway Conoco around 10 am. We ride more than that but Sundays there is always someone from our group riding in the area.

Yep, 2 years in a row now skunked for fireworks because of dry conditions. This summer the skies opened right after the 4th and it rained like crazy most of the summer. Now with early snows, we should be riding late and hopefully we can have those awesome Ouray fireworks in '14 again!

Last spring in the San Juans...

This is California Gulch looking WSW. The jeep trail runns right through the bottom of the valley to the end, then up over the top on the right just short of the rocky peak. California Pass is 13,200ft I think.

We parked at Animas forks, and in the spring you can ride rediculous amounts of backcountry, all above treeline if you wish.

Ridden all of the areas you pictured. Plus quite a few more in the San Juan's. Great country. No arguing that. To say it is expert level only is a little silly though. Spring riding is concrete. Fun but still not all that challenging. One can make a challenge about anywhere. This thread is funny. Mines bigger than yours. All the areas that have been mentioned in this thread can be turned into expert level terrain if one knows where to go. No bashing, just comical how it has gotten so personal.

Sam

The only guys butt hurt are the Mesa guys, and YES, it is pretty dang funny. I have ridden all the areas too, and then some, for the last decade or so. I just happen to despise riding the Mesa. My least favorite place for sure. I have had guys "show me the good spots" and they pretty much blow. JMHO
