Most Impressive Riding Skill

For me, it has to be side hilling. Strength, balance, and throttle adjustment throughout. It is even more impressive when you have to jump from board to board and still keep control and balance. Anything technical is most impressive in my opinion.

HA! Yes, these are less than favorable conditions to be attempting any crazy maneuvers on. Whatever it takes to keep it pointed in the right direction. Doing the elevator here would no be the best way to keep a nice looking sled though.

0:50 seconds in...elevator. A controlled down hill descent, where the back of the machine washes out slightly. Elevating your sled down hill on it's side. It gives you a weightless feeling as gravity forces you down hill, but you hold the sled on it's edge, a total rush of adrenaline.

I call this my gangster slide maneuver. Coming in hot.

I may be old but if I'm riding with someone new I'm most impressed if they can get unstuck without my help.

Getting a sled unstuck is what I admire. I've trenched my 99 RMK 700 too many times to count and I was always impressed by folks who volunteered to help me get out and they'd often just hop on and get the machine out while all I did was just spin the track and dig deeper.

^^^^this is something I've never forgotten about since I started. I used to have nightmares about getting stuck, Generous riders would come toss it out of my hole I dug like it was a plastic toy. Or, I would dig to china thinking that's what I had to do. Definitely a skill I'm glad I learned the hard way on.

I always thought bulldog was going downhill, you turn the skis opposite the direction you want to go, then lean into the hill, whip a U-turn and go back uphill.

The move that comes to mind for me is when someone is going uphill and maybe hit a really steep part or cornice, and they have the sled vertical and whip it around so it is facing downhill in nearly the same track.

I've know the one you are describing as the button turn for years.

And I agree with the bulldog as well,

The most impress riding skill is the guy that doesn't give any indication what kind of rider he is until he reaches the mountain. When you reach the first technical area, he would say, "I hope I can make it?" and then promptly makes everyone in the group look like beginners riding kitty cats. I've learned to shut up, because I usually find myself on the lower tier of the group.....except when I'm riding with my wife. Then I'm KING!

one of my dads buddies is the king at this. when i was a kid he was getting factory support from arctic cat and could out ride anyone that i ever came across. he would start setting the hook on the ride up with a new guy. playing dumb about new parts on other guys sleds, asking a lot of questions he already knew the answer to. then we'd get the sleds unloaded and he'd "forget" to put his goggles one, strap his helmet etc....

on the ride up the trail or through the fields he'd fall off of his sled a couple times. then he'd start asking advice on how to ride from the new guys that didnt know him. they bite hard and start big talking; helping out this "green newbie rider".

then out of the blue he'd start throwing to down and making everyone look silly. he would never break character; claiming that the advice they were giving him was helping him so much that he could finally figure out how to ride... it was awesome to watch as a kid

The ability to not wad it up, Id take that any day...

I second that! I have seen guys celebrate after wrecking their sled, arms raised in victory yelling like they did something good. If I damage my sled I consider it an epic failure, not something to be celebrated.

I'm curious, if you had to list just one riding skill (maneuver) that really impresses you, what would it be? When you see someone do this particular riding skill you say to yourself "ya, that guy can ride"!

For me, it's side to side footwork. When I see someone gracefully hop from one side to another using only one foot in any situation with grace and speed I think, "why the hell can't I do that"? :face-icon-small-hap

There is no ONE riding skill that says ya that guy can ride Its a package without all the skills your no one.
