I Hit A Tree 6 Years Ago In The Same Martin Creek Area, Tore The Front Ski, Mounting And Bulkhead Pretty Good. The Sled Was Non Ridable.
The Bad Part Of The Accident, I Also Broke My Fibula And Tibula Of The Right Leg. These Were Almost Compound Fractures (totally Twisted, Separated But Didnt Break The Skin). The Pain Was Unbearable, And I Was Unable To Move Myself.
Fortunatly, I Had A Radio' With A Microphone On The Coat Lapel. At 12 Noon, I Was Able To Contact My Group By Radio And Had Help Within 5 Minutes. The Group Was Experianced And Set Up A Plan Of Action. Two Stayed With Me And Built A Fire. Two Went To The Hiway To Greet Help And Get The Tobagan From The Ski Area. We Had Contacted Search And Rescue And They Helped But It Was Mostly A Buddy Rescue. We Had Three Guys Building A Trail That They Could Get A Rescue Tobagan Down.
At 3 Pm We Had A Little Chopper With Search And Rescue In The Area And I Was Able To Use The Radios To Contact Them, But I Was In The Fog And They Couldnt Get To My Elevation And They Couldnt Land In The Soft Snow Anyway.
At 4pm My Hiway Group Came Back To The Scene With A Tobagan In Tow And An Emt. She Wouldnt Even Give Me Aspiran Because It Would Mask The Pain. We Went Slowly Down The Trail Easing Me Down Over Many Switchbacks And Other Rough Spots. Finally Got Down To The Main Trail Around 7 Pm. Thought This Was Going To Be Easy From Here, But The Ride Was Way To Rough. I Could Only Doo Three Moguls Slowly Before The Pain Was Unbearable. We Averaged One Mph And Got To The Waiting Ambulance At 9:40 Pm. I Was Finally Drugged, Processed And Driven To The Hospital. They Operated (inserted 14 Inch Rod Down The Center Of The Bone) And I Slowly Recovered.
If It Wasnt For The Experiance Of My Group This Could Of A Had Very Catastropic Ending. This Took Ten Hours To Get Me To The Trailhead.
If I Was Riding With Only One Buddy At This Time It Would Have Been Early Morning Or The Next Day Before I Got Out.
We Need To Ride Safely And Everyone In The Group Should Talk About How You Would Handle A Accident, Missing Snowmobiler Or Avalanche Scenarios.
I Was One Of The Lucky Ones But Being Prepared Also Helps.
