Mishap with sled deck

Man, I hate to be critical but I have laughed my *** off reading these posts. Come on, the ramp fell off, what kind of moron would try and load on a deck without tying or pinning the ramp to the deck. It is just common sense! Use your head people, I find loading on a deck very simple and have never had a problem. A side rail is a great thing to have though.

Just bent the bars but my legs are bruised pretty good ! I blame it on the G%DD&mn simmons ski's they don' ride inside the rails of the ramp very well.
I knew there was a reason why I bought a 1500lb atv whench a couple of months ago !

carma is getting you, you shouldn't have made the coment about my 2 windows:eek:, that problem should be solved now:D

Yep! My ramp pins are about 2.5" long and I make sure the ramp is solid before loading, no way it's moving. I don't understand why people don't take the time to make sure something is secured properly?

Everyone keeps talking about the rails on the side of the deck mine stick up about 2" when it came off the ski's were off the deck and sled was at that tettering point before the front end came down and then it rolled off. I don't know how most of you guy's load on your deck's but unfortunetly I can't just "creep" up the ramp don't get me wrong I'm not some cowboy who who get's a 50 yard run at it I've always started pretty close . As to the post above on the bulldog decks the ramp has hooks and was securely on there.

if you had your fat bastard hat on none of this would have happenned:eek::beer;.

maybe you should wear some chaps and a helmet when loading. put some stars on your helmet and some spurs on your boots. I think it will help with your loading and cowboy fantasy:D

It's a Bulldog sled deck I love the deck ie: the sides slide out but the ramp is something to be desired it's nice in the aspect that it fold's into itself but the ramp in my opinion is too narrow my 03 vertical escape stock ski stance and the simmon's ski's you rubbing the inside edge's of the ramp. I'm going to mount my wench i bought on the "head ache" rack so as not to have this problem anymore. Then i'm going to build a new ramp to my spec's.

please do not post pictures

I've watched my buddy have ramp loading problems this year. On one ocassion he made almost to the top of the ramp then the sled kicked sideways then the sled started to tip over the edge. I ran over and was holding the sled up while he was trying to get the sled back onto the ramp. I finally gave out and he said to let the sled fall. On our next ride he had a similar problem but not quite so dramatic. The carbide caught the ramp and pitched him sideways. I have always watched him load partly to see what carnage happens but to also make sure he doesn't hurt himself. The last thing I would like is to drag him out from under his sled and make a trip to the ER. I personally think sled decks are accidents waiting to happen.

my deck is another that you cant just creep up. >6ft. ramp, the angle is steep enough that you must carry enough speed into it that the entire track is on the ramp before you can get any traction.

last season i lost a roller in my primary and so the sled was basically stuck in gear.slow down and the sled would die.anyhow came back to the truck at bakers lower lot, my ramp was still down so i went for it......

ended up stalling the sled w/ the ski's on top of the headache rack
but not touching the roof of my 2mo. old truck.sometimes you just plain
get lucky

I always try to use a snow bank or a ditch to back the truck into to make the load angle less. Makes for not as exciting of a time loading, and that is a good thing.

^ Ya man, that makes total sense to me and I do the same when loading anything with a ramp. 9 times out of 10 within a few feet of where you're parked there's something to make life easier.

I'd rather look like a wuss than an idiot when it comes to loading in the parking lot man! And that's not a shot at the guy's having problems, but it sounds like some of you are making life harder on yourselves than it needs to be....

I generally do the same thing but this was in my driveway trying to get ready for the holiday weekend so that i didn't have to do it all today.

well if your ramp is 450lbs like mine it will never fall off.. and if i does...LEAVE IT! lol:D:D i also put a kicker on my ramp(like the beavertail) this changed the angle alot.. every little bit helps. the winch is a good idea for broken sleds.. trying to get a none running sled on a deck can be fun

For sure, I'm not saying that it can't happen....just that IF there is an easy way to make it safer, might as well utilize it. That's not always the case I know

I grew up useing a rack, but they were back when the 121 or 121 were the only stock lengths you had to choose from. The old rack would turn 360 degrees. You could load or unload form the back or eather side. Now days the sleds are longer which make it even funner. At one point as you load your sled the only thing touching is the skies and your back boogie wheels. At that point is were the lack of traction on the parking lot, driveway, or road becomes very important. I little extra speed is required to get past this point on alot of ocations. Many times the parking lot has been very icey and had required a second attempt.

Then one day I got a great idea. I took an old snowmobile track and cut it so it laid out 121" long x 15" wide. I then chained it to the bottom of the ramp. So it lays out on the parking lot and is attached to the ramp. Then you can drive up ramp with your track on this old track it would give you all the traction you needed. After the sleds were loaded you fliped it over on to the ramp and slid the ramp into the bed of truck and away you went.

sled deck

Always, always, always where a helmet when loading on a sled deck no matter what brand or style it is.When your at home and load a sled it is easy to just toss it up there real quick. But when you have been riding all day, your wore out and thats when accidents happen.Be safe,Merry Xmas.

Deck ramp upgrade

www.stfdecks.com makes an update kit for ramps so you can pin them to your deck.I had an older design deck of theirs which i purchased used from some else, and they did the up grade for free. you could probably order the part and install it yourself, or even build your own. my ramp would also become unstable if you did not have it on level ground, because it just sat on the deck until the upgrade was installed.

I love my Marathon deck for just this reason. The ramp extends to 10 feet and the angle is really nice. It has little locks that lock it on to the deck so it will never fall off. It also comes with SuperGlides which give you ski glides and traction all in one. You can walk up or down the ramp without falling on your rear! I do get nervous about ever falling between the bars on the ramp and breaking a leg though! I should weld on some expanded metal so you couldn't fall through.

agreed! I had a deck for one season, most of the time it was ok loading, but in icy conditions, or uneven road it was very dangerous.

it says right in the manual of any new sled that you have to winch it when you load or you void your warrenty. I'm surprised decks dont come with a winch, or at least a warning.
Its a law suit waiting to happen.
guy buys deck, follows manufacturer recommendations to load(rides on), breaks his back doing so, $$$!

yamaha got sued and lost for not specifying their jet skis don't have brakes, this would be a much easier case to win.

anyway, my next deck will have a winch, but I'm not sure where to mount it. is anyone winching their sleds on? pics? what works?
