michigan U.P. snow depths + riding conditions

i noticed john dee has updated snow depths in several areas around houghton and twin lakes. i think it would be nice if locals and fellow yooper riders could update this thread with snow depths and riding conditions through out the season. i will be traveling to twin lakes area since there seems to be the most snow there per john dee. i will be leaving on thursday and heading up for the weekend and will post when i return. if anyone has any updates feel free to write what you have found, i believe this could be a great resource for us.
thanks

I will riding up in the Twin Lakes area this weekend as well. You probably already know this, but check out the area conditions section in the General Disscusion area of the site, alot of good info in there. Looks Like Wendsday into Thursday should give us some good snow for this weekend.

where are you guys starting out at? what type of riding are you planning on doing? i will hopefully post some pics when we return.

I'm heading up the weekend of the 12th. I dunno if I'd go this weekend if I had a trip planned. Not deep enough and I don't feel like wrecking the sled.

i agree its going to be marginal, but the forcast looks pretty good. checked wunderground.com and johndee.com. looks like some LES may be coming through with a good percentage of chance of snow all week. today there is a winter storm warning through 11pm. cool temps with western winds and good chances of snow. i am going to take the rail extensions and the 2" track off and run my little 136x 1.5" put the scratchers on and have some fun.

We will be starting out In Mass City, then riding to twin lakes, and then go wherever we want depending on how much snow we get this week. I am pretty confindent the riding will be pretty good up there this weekend for the first week in december. I think by friday there will be at least another 8-10 inches in most spots (possibly more)from this front that is coming through on Wendsday including the lake effect on the back side of the front that will bring the majority of the snow. Word is by Tommorow night the National weather service will most likely issue a winter storm warning for the area for Wendsday night.
We will probably be doing 50/50 trail vs. offtrail.
I just want to get back out the sled, good conditions or not.

take some pics while you are out and some measurements of the places you ride too. we will be doing as much off trail as safely possible and the rest trail. tkuss, i agree i just want to get out on my sled again. this could be a great weekend of riding! i am exited no matter what the outcome.

I will be heading to Twin Lakes on the weekend of the 12th. I am hoping it continues to snow up there and build to that base. Just looking to break the sleds in without totally tearing them up.

I'm a little futher north in Houghton, and there's not more than about 4 or 5 in. on the ground. Any spots on the trail that have tailings dumped on it have rocks poking through the snow. :(

Im heading up next weekend, I'll try to post some reports from the central part of the Keweenaw. We had about 6-7 inches on the ground with a bit of an icy base over Thanksgiving and through the weekend, but definitely needed more snow. It was very tempting to take the sleds out, but I opted to finish up with some preseason maintenance on the M6. We need to cover up the gravel base on most of the trails, so any additional snow should help a lot. To all those going up this weekend enjoy!

Just in case anyone was wondering, the Houghton lift bridge is not open yet. I called the city and they said it probably won't open until we get a few more big snows so there's enough snow to get the groomers across it.

thanks for pointing that out. In John Dee's journal he did say that richard and sandy from krupps were going to get out the groomer this week, he said there's plenty of snow there but was unsure if they were going to drag or not. If people are planning a trip this weekend twin lakes looks to be the place to go. looking at the wunderground hour by hour, it looks like the wind on monday and tuesday will be traveling across the lake hopefully bringing some long awaited LES. i was happy when i looked at the twin lakes cam and it was snowing!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw on the webcam the bridge is in the lowered position. Do they have gates keeping it closed? I remember crossing it in December several times over the metal grating before the groomers have put down the snow mat on the lower level.
