Mexico vacation suggestions?

I'm finally taking a holiday and considering Mexico for the first time. Any suggestions on what area to stay at? Looking for an all inclusive. Would rather go to Maui but can't find much of a deal right now.

A couple rules when looking for Mexico deals:

The gulf side (Canun) has crystal clear waters and beaches are awesome, but the cost of the vacation is more.

The pacific ocean side (Porta Vallarta) is cheaper but the ocean water isn't as clean and clear as the gulf side.

sit on the beach in a hammock and drink some corona with lime...:):) Least that'd be what I'd do...:D

I've been to Mexico several times and stayed at several 5 star resorts.
Took the wife to Maui this year and stayed at the Marriot Kanapali.
Not only is Maui less expensive than Mexico (mexico is a tourist trap) you can eat anywhere, the locals are happy to have you visiting, no polution, dozens of activities, it was alot of fun.

Suggestions for Mexico:
We hate Cabo, but love San Jose which is 17 miles N of Cabo. I've stayed in the Westin which is between Cabo, and San Jose (very nice place to stay) and at the Grand Mayan which is in San Jose. There are a few good restaraunts in San Jose, and a few in Cabo, however the menu prices are high, and like I said they are good, but not anything special just overpriced.

I've been all over Mexico, and you leave with the feeling that the locals did just enough to get you to spend your money. When you leave Maui or any of the other HI Islands, you get the feeling that the locals went above and beyond to give you a nice vacation.

Exact opposite experiece.

Stayed in Maui for 11 days: All in Kanapalli, some in a hotel and some in a rented condo. Had rental car ($$$) to travel to other beaches\road to Hana. Fuel was $$$, food was $$$, and the nightlife is terrible unless you are into high end dinning. The weather is great and its beautiful but not much for the 25-35 crowd after dark.

Mexico - currently heading back to Playa del Carmen for the 4th time. Have been to many Mexican locations. RUI resorts in Playa (Playacar, Palace, Yucatan) air plus all inclusive ($1300 pp). Playa del Carmen is better than Cancun but with the same weather and beaches. Good nightlife, American Dollar still really good, plenty of things to do all within 30 minutes both directions up the shore. Yes they do want a tip just for smiling at you but that is your choice and keeping your bartender and waiter happy is about all you really need to do.

If you want to save a load of cash.
Just come to northern colorado.
Everyone speaks spanish and there arn't very many gringos around.

I went do mazatlan in december and holy **** it was fun. Not only fun it cost less than half the money it did for me and my girlfreind to go to Oahu. When I can afford to go on a trip again I will go back to Oahu. I just like the atmosphere in Hawaii better but Mazatlan was a fun party trip, I dont think I have ever drank so much beer in ten days as I did there haha. Mexico is WAY cheap thats the only reason we went is because we wanted to get out and couldnt afford much. For example, we wanted to go fishing one day and for three of us it cost 350$ total to rent/ charter a really nice 42' Hatteras fishing boat for the whole damn day.

I agree on the Cabo issue. It's nice for a day trip or an overnighter(just so you can go to Cabo Wabo for the night). San Jose is a nice clean city but i've never stayed there. I stay at a little fishing village about 40 miles north of Cabo called Los Barriles. But it's a fishing destination so you prolly wouldn't want to go there for just a vacation. No night life either. The town has only about 5000 people tops & only one paved street & the few bars they have shut down at 10 or so. Cabo is just too americanized.

Like f3600 said Playa del Carmen is where I would recommend. Awesome weather like Cancun but without all the dumbazzs. We rented a house right on the beach, for a good price and had a great time. You can also ride the ferry over to the island of Cozumel for a day, pretty cool place.

I go to mexico every year been to maztlan ok cancun was fun Ive been going to cabo for 5 years now staying at my time share at the playa grande IM taking alittle vac in april to cabo no all inclusive to much dough staying at the Tasoro 59.00 a night its a bed .like truck around town alot airfare with Delta cheap mywife and I 1500.00 hotel and airfare for one week.

Go to Hawaii - check Costco.com - I found a he!! of a deal for Kauai. :sun:

We didn't like Cabo either. Customs sucked too. I've heard Loreto is nice though.

Mexico rocks. All exclusive is kinda stupid if you are going to experience anything!!! All Exclusive ensure you stay at the hotel....

1. Stay @ cheaper place's "no view, right in tow, only need clean bed and shower"
2. Eat 2-3 streets up from the beaches.
3. Drink water out of bottles.

Those are 3 rules of making a cheap fun vacation in Mexico.

for me and my gf to stay at the El Cid in Mazatlan right on the beach for 9 nights plus air fair round trip was 1200$ a person. It doesnt get much cheaper than that plus our hotel was really nice.

Make sure you take in the "Donkey Show"! :)

Go to the Pacific side Acapulco, Mazatland, PV, I just got back from cancun and it was cold and rainy. yes the water is nice in Cancun but the beach was coverd in seaweed and it was to cold to go in the water. I spent 2 weeks in cancun with only 3 sunny days that maxed out at 23c (72 f) Where in acapuclco it was (32-34c) (90 f) and sunny . Bettet yet Go to thailand 34 - 44 and the nicest water anywhere...
