Megacab or not

So I'm in the market for a new truck. My old one is a crew cab gmc duramax. I've always driven Chevy's or GMC but it's time to change over to the Dodge world. I do 80% in the city 20 % outside the city driving. Here's my question. I LOVE the look of the Megacab but don't need it. I'm worried it's long and/or hard to park and turn around in the city. Is the turning radius that much different on the MC as with the noraml Crewcab. I'd be buying the MC mostly for the looks. What's your guys thoughts. I have no probblem driving my truck now I'm just not sure if the MC is really that much longer. And if it is. If it will make really any difference. Thanks for the comments guys.

The megacab is the same frame as the quad cab long bed so the turning radius is going to be the same. Depending on what year of GM you are coming from, the dodge may have better a turning radius. I have a mega long bed and I love it. Sure I have to be a little more selective in my parking spots. I usually park at the far end of the lot, but my fat a$$ needs the exercise anyway. No matter what vehicle you end up getting you will get used to it.

I have a 2010 Dodge long bed 4 door. It is not a mega cab but the rear seating is so much bigger than the older style cab. I don't see a need for a mega. With older style pre 2010 I would have liked a mega.

I have a Mega cab SB, and I love it. Yes at times you have to be a bit more selective with parking but no big deal IMHO. If you got young kids you don't have to worry about the kicks to the kidneys, also lots of room for sled gear.:face-icon-small-hap

My exp I owned gm for 20 years switched to dogde diesel from duramax now back to gm the only good thing about the dodge is the cummings the rest of the truck is junk. Imo Find a dodge that has 70,000 miles on it and drive it and you will see what I mean. I drive on about 60% gravel and the front end didnt last past 30000 miles and has way to many rattles always putting on new door handles 325$. Couldn't afford the dodge after warranty was up. I did not have the mega cab the other one worked fine for me.

I've been scared to jump to Dodge for years for that same reason. Love the cummins but everything around it seems to fall a part. Plus the Duramax has the Alison Tranny. I think Dodge has really stepped it up on the 4th gen's.

Thanks for the comments guys. My 03 GMC isn't hard to drive at all. Like the guys early said "I'll get used to what I buy". The MC may by a little longer but I think (don't quote me) that the dodge has a tighter turning radius. So it's probably about the same as what I drive now.

The best thing to do is probably just go down to a dealership and drive them both.

My advice to you is to take the trucks you are looking at on a long drive. I went from a 04.5 dodge to an 08 chevy to an 07.5 dodge. I loved the 04 dodge and had not issues with it at all but I wanted a change and went to chevy. The Chevy was nice for short trips. After about 2 hrs the seats would kill my back. You are coming from an 03 GMC and those have different seats than the new trucks. I too had an 03 Chevy before the 04 dodge and the chevy seats were awesome. I can drive all day my current dodge and not have any back pain.

The things I really disliked about my 08 chevy was the seats, small gas tank and soft suspension. My trailer really seemed to push the truck around and the dodge seems more planted.

Don't buy into all the allison hype either, they have just as many problems as other trannys. I haven't had any problems with my dodge tranny (6sp auto) and I have it tuned to 150hp over stock. I do have to be careful with a big tune because I know what can happen but I don't baby it either.

Disclaimer: These are my opinions and experiences. I know that some people will disagree. All the new trucks are good, just get the one that is the most comfortable to drive.

Just hit 50k on my 10 mega and the only problem so far was a squeeky u joint at about 43k. I love this truck mega cab is great but I hate the short bed, it'll be a long bed if I can convince the wife haha.

Still tryin to figure out how I never replaced a door handle on my 01 3500 ram with 220k on it living on a gravel road???

Length of the Dodge Mega Cab and Quad cab are the same, bed is smaller in the Mega Cab.

GMC/Chevy, the fuel tank is much larger. 36 gallons now.

Ride will be better on the GM product. Go drive both for a long drive. Ask if you can keep them for a day or two, a serious dealer will allow you to.

Allison is not all hype. They do an amazing job of handling the power and handling a load. M1 Abrams, uses an Allison, I wonder why?
:)

Length

The length of the Mega Cab and Quad Cab short box trucks are NOT the same! The Mega Cab has the same wheel base as the Quad Cab long box.

mega

I too live on gravel<tow a 38 ft goose neck sled trailer,180,000 miles finally did the front ball joints(big deal) and original door handles still working fine,no other issues what so ever! bbbbbbbbbbest truck I have ever owned. I have 16 in my fleet, all brands.

i have an 06 mega and an 05 quad cab and like them both but for longer trips loaded or unloaded i take the mega but dont ever buy a mega cab with the hemi in it. i think youll be better off getting a mega cab.

Mega Cab for room

I've napped in the back of mine with my wife while we were in between games at a hockey tournament with our oldest son. Fold the seats down roll out the memory foam and a sleeping bag. I'd live in that b!tch if I was single! Tonnes of room.

Go to the cummins forum and search the seats, door handles and electric windows. Had dodge come let me in my truck more than once when door handle broke they had to break in with a wire. Ford and gm have way better trucks you can buy a dodge 8000$ cheaper than the ford or gm here if they were not cheaper they would be out of business.

On my 2nd megacab and unless one of the other MFGR's come up with something similar... I'll stick with it. First one was a 07.5, 110k miles and really no issues that weren't related to the Emissions.

35k on my '11 and no issues with this one either, the turning radius on the 4th gens is really something else, my boss drove mine and couldn't get over how much tighter it was than his '10 F250.

I've slept in mine before, like mentioned above, memory foam or an air mattress and it would be quite comfy (especially with the overhead TV to watch Sponge bob all night)

I've known a lot of guys who bought into the Dodge hype and sold their Duramax for one. All of them are back in the Duramax now. Cummins is a good engine, but Dodge doesn't make a nice truck, at least not after a few years on the road. Time will tell if the newer ones are any better than the old ones or not.

The Allison is not "hype" at all. If you have the 5 speed and LB7/LLY before, try out a newer truck with a lot more power and a 6 speed. Its an entirely different truck. In regards to your seating problem, I've heard of guys with the baseline cloth seats not being able to get comfortable in them. Try the 8 way power adjustable leather seats. They are much more comfortable!

I had a loaded LTZ and the leather seats were the ones that I couldn't stand. We have the cloth seats in our work truck and they are even worse than the leather ones.

The Allison is not "hype" at all.

I was not saying the Allison is a bad trans but that it isn't "bulletproof" like people seem to make it out to be. They have their issue too, especially when adding power to the motor. It is a stronger trans than what dodge has but it isn't as strong as fords.

I agree that its not bulletproof, and I never claimed it was. Anybody who does claim its bulletproof is very misinformed. My comments were about its performance and operation, not its ability to stand up to abuse it was never designed to see.

GM/Allison are not out to build a trans to tolerate extra power without failing. They are out to make it perform at STOCK power levels. Anything over 90HP empty or 40HP towing, and you're asking for trouble. The limits of is strength have been defined and demonstrated many times. Yet so many people load in a +200HP tune and beat the **** out of it and are surprised when it limps.

The Allison is the best trans on the road, and I've never seen anybody debate that. For anybody that has only driven the 5 speed version, the 6 speed version is that much better. However, if you want to make big power, you have the pay to get it built.
