McCall

Rode on Sat. The sun was awesome. A little cold in the morning, but the clear sunny day was unbelievable. The snow was marginal. A new dumping of snow up there would be nice. Rode towards goose lake. There were a few pockets of snow that were fun to play in, but there are a lot of gremlins under the surface.

I had a nice stick but I also had the only camera! Saved again!

Wade - were you spying on us or something? Its un-nerving how you knew where we were.

See ya at the trinities!

Nice day, we have a group coming over from Oregon on the 16-19th. any recomendations on riding areas?, staying at a house just outside Donnelly, Could use some help getting around, where to go? Thanks for any input

Snow has been great in the trees and down low in the valleys, then soft yet set up enough to provide awesom traction elsewhere except a little wind blown up high on certain peaks (we've had some crazy wind around here lately). Getting more snow right now!

Here's a pic of my hubby from yesterday's ride...

We had a blast up there over New Years weekend. Went to Copet Creek and played all over in there, and then on Saturday we played in the old burn area on the right, then crossed the road and lake and up in a small bowl and played there.

Me getting stuck!

Where to ride?

Help I am going to McCall this weekend with my wife cousin and his girlfriend. I would like some suggestions on where to ride to keep everyone happy (insert women are never happy joke here<<<) My wife is ok on a sled and my cousins gfriend is fairly new to sledding. Hopefully can find an area close to trail with some boondocking and climbing. I would rather keep the girls happy and be able to go again. Thanks for any advice.:beer;

Hi Eric,

Kris here, send MOCO a pm -- he knows where to go to keep the "ladies" happy. I don't remember where, but I do know a stop at the pancake house for breakfast is a big help.

BTW ~ I am all done at NNU. See you later. :D

Take Warren Wagon to the Burghdorf hot springs.....the ladies usually like that. There are play areas along the way, excellent groomed trail there......I believe its a 30 mile run into the hotsprings....
Last time I was there it was about 7 bucks to use the springs......very cool

great info

Id like to thank everyone in advance for all the great info found in the two treads about Mccall on here. In March 12-15, a group of 4-5 guys (ages 25-32) will be heading out there, meeting a couple guys from WA, all good riders (some better than others). This will be the first time riding a new place. For the last 20 years, we have ridden the Snowies in Wy and Northern Colorado. We figured it was time to see some new country. I have no idea to expect from this area, but seeing the pictures and listening to the reports already has my blood pumping. We do not ride trails unless we have to, mainly boondock. 2-3 guys will have to climb something because they are morons, but to each his own hehehe. We all have avy gear and enough survival tools and equipment to spend a week in the trees.

We will be staying in a hotel just outside of McCall, cant remember the name, but I guess my main question is where to go or where to park? I have both maps Wade has talked about, and after looking at them, im bewildered. Where we ride, there is one parking lot, one mountain, no other real choices. How do you guys wake up in the morning and decide where you would like to go that day? Must be a tough decision lol.

Anyway, I was thinking of starting at the Francie Wallace parking lot, and working up toward the "Duck Lake Cut Off" or the "Fisher Creek Saddle". I understand stay west of "V" trail and we should be fine as far as unaccessible to sleds right? Is there any private property in that area we have to careful of? The last thing we want to do is piss someone off or cause any problems. We try to be a very considerate and helpful group. Do you guys think this sounds like our type of riding? Also, do you think we would prefer to the north are or the south area? I hope I have explained the type of riding we are seeking for any of you to provide idea to where we should go. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We have been saving, and even giving up a few trips here in order for this trip. It will be close to a 13 hour drive for most of us, hopefully everything goes good, and thank god the gas prices have gone down. I know I will have more questions as March approaches and I will be checking this section probably every day in anticipation.

Once agian, thank you, and I cant wait to see Idaho. Happy sledding!!!

Husker you guys are in for a treat! McCall is world class riding and lots of variations for all levels of riders. My hope is that you guys will hit it perfect and you'll have sunshine while you are here. If it doesn't snow for two weeks in McCall you can still find untouched riding. IT"S THAT HUGE! Miles and miles and miles of stuff to try. You can park in same spot and never cross your yesterdays tracks for multiple rides.

The cool thing about McCall's trail system is that the huge riding zones are interconnected so you can pick your parking lot. Of course there are exceptions and there are also killer rides not associated to the Lower Lake parking at FW or upper parking at Brundage even though those are the popular tourist starts. It's all well groomed and well organized so that you can play in between the trails and keep from getting too lost. We've ridden there for years and years and while we hardly ever know exactly where we are, we always know where we want to go, and have always come home! (I bet you almost every experienced McCall rider has that same experience...it's cool!)

We sometimes leave from the house in town...sometimes go to green gate or francis wallace...and sometimes go to brundage...depends on the ride plan and the skill set of our crew. East side is hardcore no help no trails...west side all around brundage is a mixed bag for everyone.

Now normally I'm a huge advocate of business tourism and general fun for everyone. BUT the hot springs at Burgdorf does not deserve any sledders business use or advocation. The operators are rude, obnoxious, elitist, anti sled, anti fun, scrouges and they have done nothing to earn a single tourism dollar at that establishment. IF I WAS FREEZING TO DEATH I WOULDN'T CLIMB IN THAT POOL! I'd drink my last COLD BEER and die right there a happy man with a bit of self respect. Why do people who hate tourists and vistors WORK at a tourist attraction? Luckily the owner doesn't need the money. Too bad!

If your looking for something a little wilder / undeveloped. Go 3 or 4 miles north out of Francis Wallace Parking Lot along Warren Wagon Road, and look for a one lane bridge on the right. Cross it, and climb to the top of the hill. From there, it all wild country. There's everything you could ask for back there. But, take your GPS and watch yourself.

Fisher Creek is good, over to Duck Lake, then cross over to the little lake, just above Goose Lake. It's called Twin Lakes. Sitting on Twin, there's a "road" of sorts, in the V, going to the top of the hill. Climb that. Now your on Granite Mountain. Just keep following the ridge back until you get to the lookout. Very nice area. Stay off the snow cat trails. Come back out the same way, don't try to drop to Goose Lake, you will end up on cat trails, and make them take pictures of you.

Flame away, for telling everyone.
